I had this idea since December and it took this long of Anthony asking for me to do it lol. If you guys dig it, we can do more vids like this. -Austen

Don’t know how much you read the comments but Balinese Gamelan is some of the most hypnotic, complex, and rich music in the world. The intricately arranged beats, played by hand by huge ensembles is astonishing to see live. Anyone really into techno/IDM, Björk and Radiohead, and/or American Minimalism like Reich, Glass, Adams, Riley, Eastman etc is going to have a huge appreciation for gamelan. There are some killer vids on KZread of some amazing gamelan orchestras.

It’s an easy and obvious comparison to make and Björk and Jonny Greenwood have extensive knowledge of musical traditions globally. Björk literally invented an instrument called a gameleste; a midi controlled celeste x gamelan. I mentioned the artists I did because there’s a direct relationship between all of them and gamelan music. I wasn’t playing hipster bingo, gamelan is just something a lot of western musicians are inspired by.

conducted improv is absolutely a thing my alternative high school had a weird little experimental improv group and we were made well aware of this stuff. On one end you've got like, John Zorns structured improv which is pretty close to how a looser jazz band works but with weird little twists to throw the players off, like conducting, but also like a card based system that dictates ordering and other stuff like that and, and then the other end is like, basically a john cage-esque experiment in chance-based composition, but in real time, with everyone trying to link their totally unstructured playing to the gestures and queues of a conductor, who in the most ambiguated sense might actually be a dancer or even a poet. ITs hard to quantify where that style ends, especially as its not really a genre in itself, moreso an approach to composition that can be applied to anything from noise and industrial to jazz, or progressive rock.

Sadcore actually *is* a genre, albeit a contentious one. It's sort of an offshoot from Slowcore Music, but most bands in the scene dislike the name and disagree with the label itself (as is also the case with artists inside the Slowcore scene). It's simply Slowcore Music but even more depressing, and heavily overlaps with the former. Arab Strap is probably your best example (particularly their album "Elephant Shoe"), although they're commonly placed under the Slowcore label too. And if you haven't heard of Slowcore before, then I HIGHLY recommend you check it out. Codeine, Low, Red House Painters, Cat Power and Arab Strap are all great artists, *ESPECIALLY* Codeine.

You gotttaaaaa check out Tyshawn Sorey, he studied at Wesleyan with Anthony Braxton and on top of being a great drummer his large ensemble guided improvisations are sensational. Those two, and Wadada Leo Smith are my favorite free improv composers, they make gorgeous graphic scores that players decipher and use to inform their improv session. Sometimes the scores tell you something approximate about duration or note choices but sometimes they’re just for you to interpret emotionally. And then often the bandleader literally guides the improv telling people when to play and dynamics and stuff like that. It’s really fun to watch and play in.
