I Took A 20-Hour Sleeper Train From Portland to Montana For Tacos.
I Went From Portland to Montana to Get Tacos. 20 Hours!!!
I had a craving for tacos from somewhere I had never had tacos before. I asked online where the best tacos were. A few people said Taco Treat in Havre, Montana. So, I got on the Amtrak Empire Builder and went to Havre, MT, 20 hours away. It didn't go like I wanted.

I live in FL which honestly is not a good state for tacos. I had Buckaboo’s recently and they were good but it is a chain. I have found best tacos 🌮 are in places out West like Arizona and San Diego.
Good on you for upgrading that woman. One time I asked a guy in Little Rock, AR where to eat. He pointed at a place, then secretly paid for our meal, with drinks. That was 2015. I'll never forget that. We could all use some more kindness.

Agreed. I was going to ask her if that it would be ok but than I thought how it would probably seem to a 25 year old girl if a 50 year old man asks to do something like that. She would probably feel uncomfortable.

Cool that that guy did that. He probably enjoyed it more than you did. I once had a good opportunity to do something similar. I was in a restaurant watching a young fella who had taken his mother? grandmother? aunt? out to lunch. I knew that that young fella was doing something both good and wise, and I thanked him for it. Regrettably, I dropped the ball on picking up his tab. Next time.
That was really nice what you did by getting that room for the young mother with the kids. You helped her more than you know. She will NEVER forget your kindness :-)

Man, I have to say that it is great to watch another vet doing well on KZread. I’m recovering from an injury right now and watching a LOT of KZread. I enjoy your humor and filmmaking. Also I live in Bend so I like your “Oregonian” demeanor. I’m only a beginner at KZread and I am learning about what works and doesn’t. Your channel has a lot about what is good on KZread. No goofy AI voices and good content. Thanks for your work.
I once made a 2 hour round trip to get Jack in the Box and 2 a.m. because I live way out in the middle of nowhere and the McDonalds that is 30 minutes away was closed. Not quite as epic as a 20 hour trip for tacos though.
Going to Montana for tacos 🌮? 😂 Why not stop in Nebraska for the fresh seafood 😂😂

I really enjoy your Amtrak videos. I have been an Amtrak fan for over 60 years. More please!
I lived in Havre. My dad was stationed at a radar base north of the town. We lived there from 1968-1972. I remember the Swiss Chalet being a couple blocks from our house. I then lived 40 miles west in Rudyard from 1990-1993. Commuted to Northern Montana College and remembered Artic Circle being around. Quite a bit of history in the town actually. Triple Dog Brewery makes great beer. Recognized many spots that you walked by. Parker's Barbeque Pit used to be an auto shop and I remember sitting in there as a 5-6 year old with my dad waiting for the car repair to be completed. Locals think Taco Treat is good but I don't think its something to brag on. Thanks for the memories.
Love the scenery and music. I've often wondered why some towns exist when I pass thru. Some just seem to be momentum.
This was great. Never been on a train want to try a trip sometime. Felt like I got educated on train travel. The scenery was great....they do need some window washers big time ..😂!
I like the scenery and enjoying your train ride. I road a train from Omaha to Alliance to my grandmother's house as a kid early 1960s. Makes me want to ride cross country someday.
That was fun Briggs. You have me thinking about doing a similar trip to somewhere/nowhere, but my starting point is L.A. In 1978 I was living in Portland and I made a slow cross country drive back to visit family in my native NYC. I wanted to explore the northern USA and Glacier Park in particular. When I left Glacier, my next stop was Havre. I was exhausted and the weather was bleak - dark skies filled with dust from winds generated by a series of big storms which chased me out of the Rockies all the way to Havre...it was like driving around Phoenix during the summer monsoons in the dust storms. I didn't get to walk around because of the extreme weather, but the town seemed generally horrific viewed through the filters that the stormy weather created. It seemed like a perfect location for a sequel to "Night of the Living Dead". It looks much better and sturdier and certifiably free of hungry zombies now 45 years later through your lens. In the winter it is one of the coldest spots in the country. So, not really an inviting place -- but it put on its best face for you and your million + subs Mr. Briggs and that Brisket sandwich looked fine. With this exposure it will be on it's way to becoming the next boomtown in America's northwest!
Sharing this Briggs! What a fun watch.
Next time you go to Havre go to Havre Beneath the Streets. There are tunnels under the town that were built when a big part of town burned. It is worth the walk through. There is a great pie place there also but I cannot remember the name of it. The drive in in the south of town is good also. It was really nice of you to upgrade the lady with the kids. When I flew with my 3 kids I would upgrade us all to 1st class and try to get the front row. The look on peoples faces when my son would be laughing about all the leg room he had was worth the expense. There always seemed to be one steward that would baby my kids so I could have a drink and relax. Stay safe and healthy.
Awesome video! I really liked it nice change of pace. Do more of this if you can. Thanks!
Favorite video ever!!!! Love it!!!! Thanks, Briggs!!

Some funny comments… Love the idea of a train to see the beautiful landscapes

I took Amtrak from NY to Rochester. The Amtrak cars were new with blue and red upholstery and the dining car was sit down. No cloth napkins but really plush embossed paper napkins! Teenage me kept a few napkins along with a blue Amtrak swizzle stick. I can still remember the conductor bellow "Uuuuu-tica - the next stop is Utica". I was surprised that bankrupt Amtrak still had nice trains. Thanks for this trip, Briggs
Fun video, Briggs! When you were standing by the tracks toward the end, waiting for the return train I was thinking, "Oh, God - please don't let it just roll through and not stop for him!! lol Glad you finally got some good food.

I enjoyed the walkabout in Havre. Really gives the feel of a town. Maybe the second restaurant was the better one anyhow.
Born & raised in nyc and didn’t have a clue amtrak connected so many different states. The ride seems so scenic! It makes me think there are likely many beautiful places in the US that are not highlighted in mainstream media. Super dope. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoyed this video and hope you do more of them in the future. Coincidentally, I have actually thought of doing this same trip, even ending in Havre, although, I probably would stay overnight.
Briggs i have been watching you since i worked at Guadalajaras! Its amazing that you came through town i love your channel and wish i would have known you were coming through town, havre actually has a super rich history for such a small town i wish i could have givin you a little tour. That being said the video pretty much sums up havre except for a few key things. If your going to little places like this it would be cool to get the word out you could have fans get you a much deeper look at these type of communitys.
I did enjoy that! I love trains, although I've not yet taken a sleeper car to anywhere.
The new format is spectacular. Makes me want to hop on a train from Texas and head North for some tacos.
Well that was fun. Definitely one of my favorites. I grew up in MT in the 80s. We would go to Haver 2 times a year for football and wrestling It is one of the coldest places ever and the wind puts it at another level. Nice job
It wasn’t a fail, you got tacos and bonus BBQ!
Youre changing up things a little. I dig it!

Just back in Portland after taking the Empire Builder from Chicago. Opted to go via Seattle as we were rewarded with some spectacular scenes in the Cascades as the sun came up. Quick change on the Cascades to Portland. Snack bar on that train had the best clam chowder I've had this side of Boston. Those old Talgo trains are about to go. Little tattered here and there. We rode coach and the seats make into a very comfy sleeping spot. Two good nights of sleep. Daylight was snow from North Dakota and through Montana. Fun traveling with you.
It's nice you like traveling by train. I've taken it from SF to Sacramento and as you said, it's ALWAYS late. Always. I don't like traveling by train. It's slow, late and the thought of being stuck on a train for that long with other people has no interest to me. I love driving to places because I can pull off wherever I want to actually see things, hike or do whatever I want to do. I do like your video, well done as always.
Great video, Briggs. Thank you. And I loved the music.
I’m from Spokane! Hoping to ride on a train from Spokane one day! Thank-You for sharing this lovely video!
Nice video. Thank you for showing us what to expect. Was thinking of one day going from Olympia to somewhere in Montana just to see the scenery. Partly a different route but having you show what the different accommodations on the train were was very helpful. Thank you. Keep up the good work
I've taken this route many times. I used to live in the middle of Montana, so Havre was the closest stop. The route is actually better the other way, TO Portland. There's something magical about watching the sunrise along the Columbia River!
Went on Amtrak from Fargo,N.D. to Whitefish,MT. to go skiing. This happened in the 90's. The food on the train was good and not to be missed, sitting at the table with a white tablecloth was a very nice change of pace from sitting in coach. Rode through Havre many times on the way to Glacier and the West Coast of Washington. Camped at the city campground numerous times when riding through on motorcycle. Riding the Highline.
I enjoyed this a lot Briggs! Thanks! I love the Choo-Choo. Well, 2-4 is a good Siesta Time! The other 2 restaurants looked nice. Must be challenging to keep the doors open in this small town. And...HEY!!! Watch what you say about Yourself. You do NOT have an ugly face! ✌️♥️ ~ 🦋
That train goes to South Station Boston!
Well that was fun and different. Thanks for taking us along. Montana is a beautiful state and sparsely populated both are pluses.

Whitefish MT is awesome. Definitely check it out, stay longer than 2 hours. When I met my wife she was from Chester MT between Shelby and Havre. Big wheat country. Havre looks about the same as I remember it nearly 40 years ago. Long trip for tacos though!
Thanks for giving the dining car some love. Nothing but good experiences for me there.
Be nice if you did more of these type videos exploring towns. Nice work. Very enjoyable.
I like this new "food & travel" channel. Hope it becomes a regular feature.
Outstanding... and Thank You for the trip!
My wife and I are taking our first train trip from Portland in just a month or so. Super excited to see how it goes!
I was excited to see you had a new video about trains on the channel. I normally just watch for state facts but I am also a huge train fan. You caught some cool ones in this video. Not sure what the make of the locomotive at 6:38 is but the Great Northern was a powerhouse. Amtrak inherited the Empire Builder route from the Great Northern in the early 1970s. the Great Northern later merged with the Burlington Route and Santa Fe to form the present day BNSF or Burlington, Northern and Santa Fe
Helping that family was a real class act, Mr. Briggs.
Looks like fun😄 Great video, tfs👏🏼🖖🏼✌🏼👍🏼

I don't get to travel much. Ap' s are not my thing. However I've been telling my husband I will travel for food. As I love cooking & it's always my love language. Thank you for this one . My husband says I should try a train trip.
I didn't realize there were passenger trains that used the freight tracks to the east of Portland. I'm familiar with sitting forever in the Gorge towns waiting for a train to pass, but I've never seen a passenger train. Thanks for the heads-up.
I rode a freight train out of Whitefish to the Coast. One of the most beautiful trips I've ever taken, despite the eight mile long tunnel along the route.
This video was a refreshing change of pace. You seem like a genuinely nice person (not that you ever seemed rude). Good to see your ugly mug and get to know you a little more. Looking forward to more adventures on the Amtrak.
TY for sharing your trip, I enjoyed it very much & that BBQ sandwich looked so good & loved the scenery & the train looked so comfortable where you we're sitting! They should clean their windows more often, bc you pay to looked out the window too right lol🫡👏💯🚉

Great video Briggs! Thank you!
great experience similar to riding the rails from Solana Beach to Houston, TX. Bottle of Scotch to compliment snacks & use as a frame for the desert, tumble weeds & mesquite landscape scenes. AMTRACK late😂,😂_waited over an hour outside of Houston to get into Houston Station.
I feel like Havre as a town could just encourage as many multinational restaurants and eateries as possible and just enjoy the irony of being a world food capital in the middle of nowhere. Could help encourage some lowkey tourism and conferencing/teambuilding trips. Get a culinary college going while you're at it.
Appreciate the dedication to your craft
Real cool!
I enjoyed your journey. I hope you can do more of these travel adventures!
I took the train from Washington DC to San Francisco in 2005. 3 days no sleeper car. Camped in the playroom for no extra cost. Pretty good time.

Love this new video Briggs.
While I find most of your videos interesting.... I really related to this one. From the un-cleaned window, to the cheezy food served in the first segment. Then walking to the front of the train, only to find another nasty window. Yeah the actual scenery is spectacular! BTW This kinds of reminds me of Downies channel. I really enjoyed watching your travels. One thing though, I realise that you were using "points", 800 bucks is beaucoup peasos! There is something that I find relatable about watching a video that seems an honest portrayal of a journey. Comment ended, KK please more videos like this one!

Holy Tacos in Lake Oswego are fantastic... Ate lunch one time in Perlie Minn, my grandmother was born there. The only thing there was an Cenex farm store which also had a cafe. We had the prime table between the fertilizer and hardware isle. Several old timers were next to us talking about how bad the 'hoppers' were back in 1947... love to stop there again.
Great show. Please do more train trips.
The Empire Builder is my favorite route…fell in love with Montana the first time I took it. I think the university helps the economy in Havre.
Excellent work on the video! It went above and beyond what was anticipated, both in content and delivery.
Havre is known for having some of the coldest winter weather. Brutally cold place.
This was very enjoyable to watch. I hope you'll do more videos like this!
🎉i ride the train in cosch it was a mad house. Next time a sleeper, wow this is wonderful special waiting area in dc for sleeper tickets all the drinks and full showers down stairs. Wonderful.
As a native Oregonian, I moved to Montana late 2015 from Salem. Haven't been back since, so I've no idea first hand what's changed - good or bad. Montana has some really, exceptionally good BBQ, especially the brisket, as you found out. Taco places? I'd suggest the one in Livingston - The Hungry Mexican - at least they recommend you call first to make sure they're open. Also Fiesta en Jalisco is just like the one you went to that was actually open. Bonus is there's a plan to reopen passenger rail service from the west of Montana following the southern corridor along the Yellowstone and Livingston has agreed to participate. Livingston used to be the gateway to Yellowstone Park before switching to Gardiner. Briggs, I think you'd really like seeing the area out there.
Awesome video, Briggs! So cool to see you "on location"
I spent a night in Havre. I pulled in with my travel trailer at a Casino RV "park" which was pulling the trailer next to a curb between the main drag and railroad tracks. I thought it would be hell, but it was very quiet during the night.
I have lived in great falls Montana my whole life and I am in havre very often for work. With this being said I am a fan of both taco treat and Guadalajara but I would say the one you ended up at is the better of the two! By the way it’s cool to see you in my home state keep it up with the awesome content!
Lol Briggs keep livin your best life! 🍻
