A very useful video. I've spent a lot of time researching Tongkat Ali (TA) with a view to using it myself and there seem to be a number of studies (some more comprehensive than others) and a lot of anecdotal evidence from users, suggesting that TA does increase testosterone in humans. What surprises me is that few seem to be discussing or considering the potential effects on other important sex hormones - it was great to see some consideration of this in this video. By way of individual example...I'm a 41 year old male that has been very focussed on strength training for the last 12-18 months. For interest, I got a comprehensive blood test which revealed that my testosterone levels were towards the bottom end of the normal range (albeit I wouldn't say I'm symptomatic of low T), but my estradiol (estrogen) levels were at the top of the high range, much like in this video. So my levels in isolation are not clinically abnormal, but there is an imbalance in the testosterone/estradiol ratio. My understanding is that this is often seen in aging males (and particularly in parents of young children - the theory being that the parent needs to nurture, not reproduce, so T levels naturally drop) and without intervention, could well continue in that direction (increasingly low testosterone and increasingly high estradiol). The one clinical study I'm aware of that has been done on TA in humans (young, healthy males in their 20s) that measured testosterone, but also measured estradiol, showed that both testosterone and estradiol increased. The experience in this excellent video supports that outcome. In the clinical study, testosterone increased by an average of 16-18%, estradiol by around 30%. Those focussed solely on T levels might say "this is great" (and feel great for it), but....for men with existing high levels of estradiol, such an increase could elevate them to dangerously high levels and substantially increase the risk of prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc. (there is a very clear established link between these conditions and high levels of estradiol). This is a significant consideration for a lot of men that undergo TRT - if you increase the amount of testosterone, you inherently increase the natural process of testosterone to estradiol conversion (by the aromatase enzyme). Estradiol levels spike and some TRT patients have to be given aromatase inhibitors to ensure their levels do not put them at increased risk of cancer and other diseases that result from excessive estradiol. The only study I'm aware of that suggested Tongkat Ali reduced estradiol (supposedly by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme) was done in a cell culture (in-vitro) in the leydig cells of rats - so totally isolated from the wider endocrine system and not in humans. I mention this because a lot of people online seem to have latched on to the potential for TA to act an aromatase inhibitor as a way to increase T levels without substantive evidence in humans (indeed this video counters that very notion, albeit acknowledging this is an individual case study). There are no doubt many benefits of using TA both in terms of health and performance (you only have to read the multitude of positive comments from TA users), but I would argue that considering the effect of TA on testosterone in isolation is not wise. There are obvious benefits to increasing testosterone (unbound/free), but if treatment with TA also increases estradiol levels (the mechanism for doing this is evidently not well understood), then such treatment would be potentially very risky for some men who may already have high levels of estradiol. I commend the author of this video for his regular blood tests and awareness of hormonal effects beyond testosterone. Anyone taking any of these supplements must be aware of their 'start-state' blood levels. It was my relatively high estradiol levels that prompted me to exercise caution and do more research before ingesting TA. The challenge of course is that most people experience relatively rapid benefits of using TA, but don't necessarily experience any potential negative downsides for some time. I'm not trying to discredit TA - everyone is different, and it will affect different people in different ways, but when some poor individual dies of prostate cancer at the age of 48, no-one is likely to link it back to their excessive estradiol levels following the use of supplements - the broader effects of any of these substances need to be well understood beforehand, so that people can make informed choices based on their individual circumstances (and routine blood work and analysis). I'd be really interested to hear of other people's experiences/blood work results in respect of Estradiol levels following TA use.

I realised that for me, supplements do not work (I have a cut guts, so before I process most of thing they actually leave my body - even at the Hospital the doctors and nurses tell me to empy all the capsules into water and drik it directly, otherwise itn would leave me untouched and unprocessed). So I bought a chopped root of Tongkat Ali and every morning I chew few pieces. It has a very bitter taste, but at least I know I'm getting something from it. And it really does work. I feel better, stronger during workouts and I don't get that tired during the day. It's also better for bed business. Only thing is not to take it in the evening if you want to go to sleep - you'd be too worked up to fall asleep.

I'm 51 and I've struggled all my life to gain muscle. The last 18 months I really concentrated on my nutrition and protein, and at one point was doing 6 days at the gym on a push-pull-legs split. I barely put on any muscle. I got lean like I always do, but my strength saw marginal improvements. Fast forward to the last 2 months on tongkat ali, and I am putting on more muscle all over my body than I have at any point in my life. My arms especially have grown to the point where I'm finding it hard to believe they are even mine. They look like all the other gym bros now. I've noticed it in so many other aspects of my life, for example wood chopping. It's easy now to split wood whereas I've always had a hard time. I'm looking forward to my next blood test to confirm what I already know; this stuff works. I'm on 3 weeks on/one off, but I'm going to move to 5/2 days. Find a good supply and stick to it!

Worth noting that temporary shedding is to be expected with any substantial hormone shifts in the human body (such as you saw in your free T and E2 levels). It doesn't necessarily indicate androgenic alopecia and there's no reason to suspect that Yongkat Ali is accelerating baldness (since it's not directly androgenic). Although having higher test levels does tend to accelerate balding, but it should be minimal in this range, is highly dependent on genetics, and is frankly the price you pay for sick gains :) Appreciate the video and I'm happy somebody actually used REAL BLOODWORK INSTEAD OF BROSCIENCE

For me when I have supraphysiological levels of test in my system my hair grows way faster and thicker as evident by my previous test cycle I’ve done. The body will try and balance it out with aromatisation/converting some to estrogen. The estrogen keeps nails, skin and hair healthy. My nails definitely grew faster than they ever did before. It’s when you start blocking estrogen that test starts causing side effects. But if you don’t block estrogen and estrogen is too high then the estrogen will cause worse side effects than test can. It’s okay to have high levels of estrogen if your test is also high and your blood pressure is fine. How each individual body converts testosterone differs. Some people a lot gets converted to dht, which causes better strength gains but hair loss, for others estrogen and some lucky people don’t even convert much of the test into anything at all

I’ve been taking toungkat everyday for about 2.5 years in varying doses, most recently about 1000mg taken in the morning with food. I’m 24, and had been suffering from low T as a result of pro hormone use in my late teens. I initially started with about 200mg and noticed very obvious effects, libido, endurance and muscle mass being the biggest. Not to mention overall well being. Hair loss did occur quite rapidly with lots of thinning throughout. It seems to have stopped, but I’ve also improved overall health practices. I notice the hair loss is much worse when drinking alcohol. Overall, I still have a full head of hair, just not as obnoxiously thick as it used to be. Zero side effects thus far other than that. It’s been life changing for me honestly.

Would you consider testing Tribulus Terrestis for us all. I’ve used it in the past but more for executive stamina and endurance when doing 16 hours days for 12 months straight. It was amazing and had a very positive benefit for my libido but more than that, my entire body felt like it was performing better.

2:57 - Hair loss. The chemical reaction which results in the production of Testosterone produces a bi-product called ADT. ADT flows through the blood stream and binds to hair follicles causing hair loss. Your immune system is responsible for removing ADT from your blood stream. As you age your immune system weakens, so is less effective at destroying ADT. This is why it's common to see men with receding hair lines as they age. This is called Androgenic Alopecia and explains the correlation between Tongkat Ali and Hair Loss as it increases Testosterone levels.

I’ have relativity low test, free test and androgen . I’m now using zinc b vitamins magnesium and tongkat to boost it. I think I’m only going to take 5 days on 2 days off for a month or 2 then take some more blood tests to see how I feel , I may take a month off and then start again . How long should you cycle off for, off course I’m worried about it dropping or enlarged prostate, but if it just boosts me to normal levels and not high I don’t have to worry right?

  • @joonius

Doesn't the body naturally produce more estrogen in the presence of increased free testosterone thereby making that result somewhat expected? I started taking Tongkat last year and definitely feel the results as far as test and libido, no adverse reactions to report other than the effect does seem to taper when taking it daily week in week out. As you mentioned I'm not sure if this experience is due to tolerance developing or adjusting to a new baseline. I would definitely recommend this (anecdotally) for any man who feels like they may need a boost but feels too young to go down the TRT road just yet. I haven't had my bloodwork done before or after so this is all anecdotal but I am very athletic but am also 38 so have definitely noticed a bit of a decline in the qualities associated with higher test in the last year or so. Tongkat Ali has filled that gap for me quite nicely, affordably, and naturally.

Bro the studies referenced were like 2013 or something with latest I think around 2021. However good to see someone with an average body and not like others in industry who are jacked and preach values of supplements and exercise when its obvious then on some form of TRT. Your right about no quick fix though and to get arse to the gym consistently working mainly with volume and reps. Now speaking to this, I'm 60yrs old and do gym at 3- 4 times per week. Motivation to keep going and showing up really important. I've been taking mixture Tongkat Ali (400mg) and Fadogia Agrestis (600mg) for about 3weeks (intend to cycle 5weeks on one week off) and notice lifting heavier in the gym and teste enlargement. Other than that though, still getting grumpy at littlest things, ED and libido still mehhhh.......in comparison to a few years ago (I'm 60yrs old) and I fucked like a rabbit. Will give another few weeks for improvements, however contingency plan for TRT in next month. Also these supplements need to be cycled due to toxicities as mentioned. Ideally for me, I'm after a better quality of life in my golden years (energy, mental clarity, jacked body). pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33541567/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23754792/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3669033/ Good to see an Aussie mixing it on YT. As T goes up so does estrogen. Men on TRT without an aromatase inhibitor faired better across many health metrics over the course of their lives. Estrogen is required for adequate neuro health, cardiovascular health, and bone mineral density, and is necessary for erections. Higher estrogen isn't bad and supports the fact that everything is working correctly and you're in good health.
