I think some people are just "built" better at learning new languages.... Your friend was there for how long and they kept making jokes that he wasn't very good, but you were there for 6 years and you're totally fluent.... Yea anyone can pick up enough to get by on a vacation, but I think most people are just memorizing words and phrases, but to be able to actually have a fluent conversation AND to be able to THINK in the language is learning on a whole other level. Even with full commitment and dedication, some people just don't have that part of their brain as strong as others. (I remember seeing a show about acquired savant syndrome where people bump their head, or get really sick, or have a stroke then suddenly they become super gifted in areas they never had once ounce of interest in before - like a brain surgeon having a stroke then suddenly being able to paint masterpieces without ever having picked up a paintbrush in his life before that) Well this Acquired Savant guy (or maybe this guy was born that way, I forget) was challenged to learn how to speak Icelandic in 1 week, which is considered THE HARDEST language to learn... AND HE DID IT!!! He was able to have a full conversation with a guy, and this was all documented on a TV show, and after the week he talked to the native Icelandic person live on tv in front of a studio audience of Icelandic people, IN ICELAND - just to prove it was all real!!! Well part of the show was talking about how traditionally scientists/doctors had thought learning a new language WELL all depended on the development of this specific part of the brain and how much activity it generally has... and some people are really good at learning new languages and some people are really bad at it....and this is typically true... but with savants it doesn't show up that way... their entire brain is lighting up the way the language region would when someone is speaking a second language fluently.... So guess what I'm getting at is that it's not always about what technique you use to learn the language, or what program, or how long, or how much immersion you experience daily, some people are just not good at picking up a new language. This doesn't mean they aren't smart or anything, it's just not a talent they have.... BUT the cool thing is that NO ONE KNOWS UNTIL THEY TRY TO LEARN A NEW ONE!!! :D - so I'm gonna check out that program and try to learn Japanese :D

It's almost the ultimate compliment. I moved to a new country, learned the language as good as I could before moving. After 2,5 years I can manage perfectly, I understand everybody and everybody understands me, but... to sound like a native, and be able to express yourself as a native... that's really something else!

I (American) took middle school and high school Spanish and spent 2 months in Central America the summer after graduation. One day during a party with a bunch of other young people, one of the locals asked another local who knew me, "Does he speak any English?" That was my proudest moment. Sadly, that was 50 years ago and my Spanish has diminished.

These are my favourite video's of the various content that you produce. Part of me enjoys how you subvert the expectations of the people you interact with, by being able effectively communicate in their native languages. The other part of me likes how the interactions change, because of your abilities in the dominant languages spoken in Japan, China and Korea. My Japanese language ability is improving, slowly, but never the less improving. Your and Tommy's Patreon Lessons give directly applicable words and phrases used in day to day conversations and interactions. This is an added benefit to being able to support a brilliant content creator. Your content, inspires my language journey, informs me of interesting people and places that you meet and go to. Explain things that confuse or confound me in the Japanese language and culture, and finally entertain the heck out of me. Any day Anming 7 uploads a new video on the Oriental Pearl Channel, is a good day made better.

There's a place near where I live that specializes in making just phở. Really good place, so you get people in there who speak different languages. Entire families speaking together at their tables. You'll hear Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, English, German, and a few others. This video reminds me of when I go there, because you'll hear something and start to giggle, and the people at the other table will realize you understand them. You might speak in English, but they might answer in Chinese. It's very much like in Star Wars, where everybody speaks their own language, but everyone understands each other. It's pretty awesome. Your video put a big smile on my face. Thanks!!!

Some people are insanely good at learning other languages. I met a bloke, name John, who was managing a bar in a hotel in Flims-Dorf in Switzerland in 1980 in Kanton Graubünden. He was British and had been living and working in hospitality in Switzerland for a few years, but certainly not a lifetime. His Schwizertütsch was 100% fluent and the locals were certain he was a native Swiss. I told one of them one night that John was an Englishman and definitely not a born Swiss. He listened again as John spoke to some locals and told me that there was no way that John was foreign born, that he in fact spoke a regional accent from Bern , Bernertütsch and was definitely a Berner not an Englishman. I could not convince him, so there you go.

You provide inspiration for many language learners. As for me, I dabbled only in Indo-European languages. My tries as foreign languages are (yeah, I know, one is classical): French, German, Latin, English, Italian and Armenian. And I can have fluent dialogues only in Romanian (native language) , French, English and Italian. And I understand a bit of Spanish, which I never tried to learn…

Even if I have seen this before in italy, I'm still amazed... How can someone live in a foreign country and don't speak the local language after 8 years ?

It's so funny to see the reactions because in Europe no one gives a damn if you speak another language in public, it's so common that no one cares anymore. But in the Orient they seem so fascinated with strangers that's almost uncomfortable to watch.
