Our 2010 Hi ace D4D 3ltr diesel engine did over a million kms with us the injectors were serviced once that i know of, and the intake manifold was cleaned out once, it did long hot running, it was sold recently the new owner very happy with it, they could not believe it had done a million kms because it runs and drives very well.

I'm helpn a mate out who's replaced head , turbo , injectors all brand new , put it back together and seems to have this cracked piston symptoms , I didn't get to see any of the job yet so I'll personally check it out but sent him your video . Thanks man great help .

Cheers for the vid, lots of good info! We've got 355,000 on our 2008 Hilux , full manifold clean, new Denso injectors, catch can and 2 micron filter installed at 250,000. Had the Injectors checked at 353,000 and they are still healthy, hopefully get a few more years put of her 🤞😎

Good info here mate. Thank god I got out of diesels long ago, I’ll stick with my 95 series VX Prado.With all this pollution gear these diesels have on them they’re just a ticking time bomb IMO. Jim

Petrols have EGR valves now. 2006 R18 Honda engines have a EGR valve.

I have a 150 prado. Just done 150k klms, thank you for the Information on timing belt that made it clear and went in smoothly. Should I replace the injecters at this point. Thanks Steve.

Anytime a vehicle does that on startup forget it.😮

You've got to keep up to date with servicing the injector seals and replacing the injectors at the correct intervals, Once the injectors start leaking or you get oil into the cylinder by other means it all goes bad quickly. I've seen cracked pistons but more commonly they melt, the oil in the cylinder auto ignites before the injector fires, it gets too hot.

How are the 1HZ Toyota lasting 1million kays in some cases are they constantly keeping tuning and oil and filters changed and injectors.

I have similar smoke on start up but then it’s fine on my 1kd 2008 prado exhaust not oily but Using probably a litre a month. Engine not rough smooth no blow by. Had injectors replaced at 275000km Chinese turbo fitted 2 years ago which is starting to get noisy which I suspect seal gone you think? Has a lack of power somewhat

Is it safe to remove the cap while motor is running even if there are no signs of cracked piston just to check for blow by? Im in the market for an early 150 prado so very interested

is the injector club still going, how many claims have you had as a percentage?

Have you ever seen a 1kd with a cracked piston which had a blanking plate fitted 7mm hole does the blanking plate make tham heat up a bit more or not?

My 2011 hilux sounds like this. I was over taking a car up a slight hill. It lost significant power, blowing a massive amount of black oil out the back. It idled exactly like this on the side of the road on Thursday night with a death rattle. I turned it off then it wouldnt start again. Road side assist took it to Toyota in Devonport where they flattly said it was a piston and it would cost 15 to 20 grand to fix !! What would you suggest a ball park figure it should cost mate? I was thinking half that.

Feel sorry for the guy. A new engine going in. Engine sounds normal for a 4cyl Toyota though.

Hi mate, looking at an 08 298k... great service history. Although I had it inspected, issues that came back are *No:3 injector low *oil leak egr side *slight oil leak turbo compressor *no smoke, no noise on idle from cold or hot, *no noise cold started on ramps facing downhill What's your thoughts on what this could be ???? Any info would help, don't want to waste my 18k cheers mate.

Toyota aren't bullet proof, they use to be when they made less power and didn't have common rail injectors. Unfortunately most options are in the same ballpark with the injection systems comming from Siemens, denso etc. To help them survive you need a better dual filtration system and lubrication additives depending on the injector type. My supposedly shitebox land rover has 476 thousand k on the original engine and unit injectors. Have two transit vans, one 790 the other 285 thousand on them, driven all around Australia. They live happily because of the filtration and additional lube they get. Also run a filter between the leak off and pump return. This way the potential of contamination from the injectors back into the pump cycle is mitigated.
