The long tip pencil technique is a great way for heavy handed people to lighten their grip. I mostly work in mechanical pencil, but when I use wooden pencils, I use this technique. Some advice i should add, the lead is often sanded to a sharp point.

@@cherylrosbak4092 I've seen artists use this technique with mechanical pencil. They just hold the pencil further up or underhanded. Hell, these are the techniques I use.

The ridiculously exposed pencil led is how I was taught to draw in art school. You’re not quite holding the pencil correctly to really get the benefit from doing so. It’s really for using while standing at an easel so you can have your arm extended out, and you hold it differently than you do a pencil for writing. Hard to explain, but it really is better, at least for me it was. Especially if you’re drawing large. And you keep the point on your pencil for sooooo long if you use it correctly. But the sound of a dropped pencil in class was always heart shattering, because you know that means whoever dropped it just lost 4 inches of pencil, and another five minutes of sharpening. You’d be surprised at how quickly you can sharpen them with a good amount of practice, I actually find it really satisfying and relaxing.

@@MrMonochromatic never tried it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Are there ones that are as thick?I'm mostly experienced with charcoal, not graphite, since that'a what we used at my university. That could be a neat hack to save time sharpening, and also keep your pencils from breaking during travel. It would probably be more expensive and feel so much different, but I imagine you could probably get used to it. As long as it was as as strong as the exposed pencil led would be. Sounds like a fun thing to look up and see if it exists!

@bethn2836 The standard lead for one is 2mm, but I've seen them go up to 5.6mm. The smaller end tend to come in various hardness levels and even colors.

That's exactly what it's for. Traditionally, they taught realistic drawing before painting and this was used to draw at an easel. In part for perspective reasons and in part because it simulates painting with a brush at an easel much more closely than the way most people draw today. It trains you both in learning to draw accurately and how to paint at an easel.

Haha you describing how hard it was to find the Jo Sonja medium! Usually i can’t find any supplies KZreadrs use in Australia, and if I do they are SO expensive. Jo Sonja is everywhere here, I have a few of their mediums/varnishes because they’re sold at Spotlight which is our version of Michael’s/Hobby Lobby and if you are a member they often have great VIP sales. It’s common for a lot of people to confuse centuries with years because of they way that centuries would start with the first century in year zero so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. It’s obvious they meant 1800s (19th Century)
