Thank you. The difference between the less expensive (e.g.) SM 57 and 58 and the more expensive microphones are not close to worth the extra cost., especially playing live. In the studio with the best, of the best, of everything besides a microphone maybe some could hear the difference. I do have to say, my Royer Ribbon microphone sounds good on flute alone in my mediocre studio.

What do you think, how big is the impact of the preamp? I believe that when I record directly into an interface, the difference per mic is bigger. Pretty good dry sound btw. 😊

I think the take away for me is that they all sound the same. Maybe my ears are untrained or my speakers just suck that much but there's no difference.

It can be really subtle for sure! Tbh, the takeaway for me was that the mics that I already own (AT4040, the two Eikon Dynamics) are good enough for now... If I happen to go to a studio that has some of the nicer ones, I might revisit this and see which one I feel like using. If you wanna hear a big difference between the mics, listen to the MXL 990 (4:52) and then listen to the AEA Nuvo (7:07). All the similarily categorized mics have a similar sound, but if you jump between the major sections, like condenser vs. ribbon, you'll hear more differences

I defnitely prefer LDC's (for most things) but the big takeaway in my opinion is just maybe avoid a dynamic mic - still leaving tons of great options!

the big takeaway for me is that a nice reverb is more important to me than a nice mic 😂 listening to all these bone dry audio clips was a little painful haha

The saxophone's tone sounds most natural when using the Rode NT2
