Looking for best leather conditioner for boots? I tested 10 of the most popular brands and compare them against one another so you can find the perfect leather balm for what you need.

In this video, I have 10 natural non-dyed vegetable tanned leather coasters, and I take 10 of the most popular leather conditioners for boots and apply them to each coaster.
I'm testing for leather darkening, conditioning power, and weatherproofing. I also discuss the shine each leather conditioner brings, but it's hard to tell on camera how much shine shows up.
At the end, I discuss my top three leather conditioners: the best overall, the best for restoring old leather, and the best for weatherproofing.
I tested the following brands:
- Venetian Leather Balm
- Mink Oil
- Red Wing Boot Oil
- Obenaufs LP
- Cobbler's Choice
- Bick 4
- Lexol
- Leather Honey
- Huberd's Shoe Grease
Toward the end of the video, I mention that you may want to clean your boots before applying leather conditioner. For cleaning, I like saddle soap.
Watch my video on how to use saddle soap → • How to Use SADDLE SOAP...

Fantastic Video. I appreciate that you talk fast and not wasting time. It is so refreshing to get the info you get in a short amount of time!!! Great information!
thank you for this detailed comparison! I'm getting my first pair of real leather boots in my life and I had no idea what I needed to get to protect them. now I do!
This helped so much! I'm getting into making leather products for myself and my wife. Thank you 👍
Such a well thought and specific video! this is amazing!
Excellent video William and everyone needs to watch this to get a great idea of what they need for their boots and shoes.... I have a lot of the conditioners you used here and I would have saved a lot of money over the years if I had watched this years ago... LOL.. Great video once again Bill..... Greg...IN
This is really great information! Much appreciated!
Amazing comparison. Great use of the leather coasters.
Great video!! Awesome comparison and super valuable content. Nicely done
Great job. Straight to the point.
One of your most informative videos. Thanks again for your help and making the video. I get a lot of different ideas and which ones work best..

Glad I could help!
Useful comparison, thank you.
there's another leather conditioner that's specifically designed for distressed leather and for leather you wanna leave looking distressed, it's bickmore's distressed leather conditioner and there's another one made by fiebings in the same name, fiebing's distressed leather conditioner. you should look into it
Obenauf’s and Huberd’s shoe grease were mainly designed for protection/utilitarian use. They weren’t originally designed for fashion shoes or casual boots bc they darken and soften a lot, but used VERY sparingly they can provide protection and a satin finish and they are all natural so they wear off and don’t plug the pores of the leather. Bick and Venetian are good, bc they don’t darken, but they have silicones that artificially moisturized and don’t darken, but they are synthetic and end up clogging the pores so nothing else can penetrate them so the leather becomes dry eventually. I use both Obenauf’s and a brand called Pure Polish (not affiliated) for this reason.

Does beeswax plug pores as well? Wondering if I should avoid products with it added in
Thanks for your review. I hope you will in the future review Zaino's Z-10 leather conditioner. It seems to have done a good job at restoring my old leather boots. It also seems to have a slight water repellant ability....and does not affect the leather color.
Thank you for your video. I purchased a new pair of Origin boots and went with the leather honey to condition them. I am finding that the boots are drying out quickly and not repelling water within a few days. Might there be a better choice than leather honey? Or something I should use on top of it?
Fiebing's Aussie leather conditioner is best for waterproofing and conditioning both. Leather Honey and Neatsfoot oil work great for restoration and conditioning.
Great video idea. I have found Veg Tanned leather can react very differently from other leathers. My “goto” conditioners for CXL is Venetian Shoe Cream. My “goto” conditioner for roughout leather is Wolverine 1000 Mile oil.
Great review. How to tell if the product has been absorbed or if it evaporated?
Thank you for your work!
I like bicks and redwings product. Always had good results
hi, thanks for the review! anyway, have you tried Venetian Shoe Cream? is that different from venetian leather balm?
Great video. Leather and honey has a cleaner too. You may want to try vs saddle soap. Need one for the different grains of leather in furniture. Except pu or fake leather, not intrested. Oh, and add leather balm for furniture too. 😊
Huberds for me since 1996 on my White's Smoke Jumpers. Wildland Firefighting, and in the rain in Washington State.
Thanks for the vid!
As a German, I like the brand name „Obenauf“ - basically it means „on top of something“…😀😃😄 E.g: „Das Fett schwimmt oben auf der Suppe.“ „Fat swims on top of the soup.“

Hi, was würdest du empfehlen?
Very great video!
Great content. Thank you.
I recently bought a pair of RM Williams Craftsman boots and prefer a more matte finish to the shiny dress look. Any suggestions on how to create the matte look while protecting the leather?
What about covering scuffs? Any info on that, please and thanks?
Far and away a fair comparison, I have used all of these and say each shoe conditioning agent to it's purpose. This would have saved me a lot of pain and effort. I do have some things I would like to add. Saphir Renovateur is really only supposed to be for polished leathers. Not natural vegetable tan leather. It is a cleaner with some light conditioning, but isn't really intended to be used without Pommadier Cream Polish or Pate Deluxe. Saphir does amazing when done with that intention. Instead of Venetian Leather Balm, Venetian shoe cream is more like Reneuvateur but it doesn't condition as well for me and darkens compared to the balm. It does have cleaning agents. For something like the veg tan leather you would have been far and away money ahead to have used Saphir Medaille D'or Oiled Leather Cream as a fair comparison(closer to venetian balm) ,you can use Saphir Super Invulner to way up the water and stain resistance too but I think you were looking for one and done here. Some people use Nappa Balm but I find it doesn't penetrate enough but does cause zero color change. If you ever want to test the Saphir Medaille D'or 1925 Oiled Leather Cream in neutral, I'd happily pay for a bottle and ship it to you for the channels sake. You've done a service helping me finally size my 877's. I kept trying to go a half size too small I am ashamed to admit! 😅 So thank you for all the content and I hope to see more coming. 👍👍

Hey man do you have any experience with Saphir Nappa Cream. I'm getting a pair of Idrese Nunos and it's what's somewhat recommended. Although I want a conditioner that's versatile. Maybe to pair with a Creme after I get some nice shoes. Do you have any recommendations?

Oh I just realized what you meant by Nappa balm XD
Hi, wish you could've said which, if any, are water based verses oil based. But either way liked the info you gave!
I need a conditioner for ostrich full quill boots. Bicks 4 is on it now. Always looks all dried out and no water protection or shine. Help!
What would be good for the footbed of leather sandals
Well im taking your advice on the Leather Honey. Im restoring a 50+ year old walrus bag.
Thoughts on cadilac leather conditioner? They sold it to me at my local cobbler shop
I’m very happy with Leather Honey on my motorcycle leathers.
Which conditioners are recommended for waxed flesh? I have a pair of mp service boots in cinnamon waxed flesh and I need help finding a conditioner that doesn’t darken the lather as much. I basically want to restore them to the original appearance. Please help. I heard smiths leather balm works well for the waxed flesh mp service boot but I’m not sure.
Anyone knows which one is best for stretching boots around the calf area? I just bought the lexol one as recommended by a cobbler online for the Givenchy boots yet I’ve been told by another this conditioner brand is merely commercial
How does redwing leather cream neatsfoot blend compare?
I was surprised that "Black Rock" was not included in the products used in conditioning testing for boots. Any thoughts?
Have u tried chamberlaine leather milk ? Whats ur thoughts?
I prefer using Huberd's shoe oil, because it goes on and leaves the leather feeling smooth and conditioned, and like obenaufs it darkens leather heavily, but unlike obenaufs it doesnt leavy a sticky residue.
Yes! This should be required viewing for new boot guys. I overly darkened my Copper R&T Blacksmiths with mink oil a few years ago. I still love them, but I wish I had preserved the original color. They look more like amber harness at this point, which is not a bad thing.

Yup. Did that to my IR's too. Just got a pair of 1907's in Copper R&T and looking for a conditioner that won't change the color. I have the Saphir Renovator, but it's too shiny for my taste.

@@davidjason1164 saddle soap, or dish soap?
Very curious of it affected the weight of the leather. I dont want to make my boots or shoes heavier
Can you please make a video comparing non-conventional conditioners like jojoba oil, bag balm, Vaseline, hand lotion, and other products that people might have laying around? Just to see what happens?
What is a good conditioner for Thurgood mac toes yo keep that red leather
Can i use it on a leather bag? Gueess soo as long as its leather right? Ot they r only meant for boots.. ? Hmmph?
Work boots used for actual hard work: Obenauf's LP or Oil, Huberd's, or Nor-V-Gen.
Why Cobbler’s Choice over Venetian Leather Balm or Saphire Renovateur?
If you see this( I am watching this video 1 year after you posted this video) I know you are a fan of Thursday Boots. I would like to know what you would use if you had a pair of Thursday Boots " white low top sneakers" ? I want something that will treat and waterproof without darkening whit leather.
What is the difference between Venetian Shoe Cream and Venetian Leather Balm
Does V. Leather Balm have silicone in it? I want to stay away from silicone on my leather dress shoes.
Looks like leather honey is better than I thought. Stayed with RW boot oil so far, will give leather honey a try now. Alas the other conditioners (except Saphir) are not readily available where I live.
Im surprised you didnt review Sno-Seal in this video as well
I've heard leather absorbs better if warmed up. Silly as it may sound. It may make it absorb better.
I'd go by if you have cheap boots then use a cheap mid range conditioner etc and if you go for expensive footwear then use the most expensive conditioner for optimum results
This was great. Thanks
I need to watch this again and make a matrix with the products I have (Leather Honey and Cobbler's Choice) as to know when to use each, depending on my boots. Looks like I need some Venetian! Surprised Saphir didn't make the top three, as I've read a ton of positive reviews about their polishes and waxes.

Neatsfoot oil is the best to treat leather, sealed with lp
Are Venetian shoe cream and balm pretty much the same?

I read somewhere balm has more wax but also read they’re the same product..
SAPHIR RENOVATOR NR 1 !!!!
Try Leather CPR.
I do know that Lexol comes with two bottles and is a 2-step process. Could that maybe have been the reason it didn’t perform so well? I ask because that’s what I’ve been using. Also, I found that with the lexol, after repeating the conditioning process a few more times, it turned my leather bike saddle from brown to black. I guess sometimes less is more. Im interested in finding something for a leather Brooks bike saddle that doesn’t change the color.
Skidmore’s Leather Cream is the highest rated leather conditioner on Amazon, and has been the recommended go-to product by Nordstroms, and top leather shops across the nation for decades. Any particular reason why you didn’t review Skidmore’s?
Surprised there is no Chamberlain leather conditioner on this list.. it’s very good stuff doesn’t darken leather like mink oil or some of the others..
Why is water repellency part of your criteria? That isn't the job of a leather conditioner. Shouldn't that slot/step be reserved for creams, waxes and boot greases/oil? Just let the conditioner do its job it was designed to do. You could make a separate category for a do-all 1 step product I guess 🤷.
Bicks 4 is the best.
Only the soles can be considered veg tan, boots outer leather is chrome tan and these two types of leather are not the same. They will react differently to oils or conditioners. It would of been nice to see this with a few different types of chrome tan leather used in the boot industry.
Venetian Leather Balm has beeswax in it so it would clog the pores of the leather making your boots hot.
You have no idea how much of a nightmare it is to get any information like this in non-American localization. I live in the Netherlands, and basically none of these are available where i live. There's also not a lot of trustworthy information readily available here. ... The search continues.
