    There are plenty of Americans that know how to drive a manual transmission. Most drive an automatic for convenience but don't delude yourself into thinking it's something special few people in America know.

    The vast majority of Americans either do not know how to drive stick or are not good at it. Most cars are not stick and you don't need to learn to get a license. The only people that learn are car enthusiast and people who happen to know someone that has one and they learn for fun.

    Why is it that manual enthusiasts like so say so few people can drive them yet they also say they learned how to drive them in just a couple of minutes? Any millennial with a smart phone can google how to drive a standard and with a bit of practice they will get it. Stop thinking you're special. People drive automatics because they are convenient, not because they can't drive a standard.

    The problem is that no one teaches the concept of "friction point." How to take off: slowly release clutch to friction point and hold. Car should slowly start to crawl. Very slowly start releasing clutch again throughout the friction point and the car gains speed. Car gets up to rolling speed and clutch locks, so speed release of clutch until completely released and car is idling at a crawl with the clutch locked. Add gas to go. The release clutch and ad gas combo can be self taught as the driver adapts.

    Well, its a massive engine kept running for a considerable amount of time without any airflow through the cooling system. The cooling requirement during idle isn't that much lower than while cruising, but there is no airflow. Although it makes me think... Does the viper not have a cooling fan?

  • @phoneytank22

    @phoneytank22

    7 жыл бұрын

    Benedocta The early vipers have problems if you leave them sitting while running with no air flow. The ECU on them has the fans to run at about the same speed for the first 1200 or so RPM. A lot of shops will take them and modify the fan speed at lower RPMs if you live in a crowded city or regular stop and go to have them turn on at a high speed, then go to a slow, then back to high when the engine temps get too high (the stock ecu just has them run really slow). Probably part of the reason why the viper did this in the video ( or a tube was cracked).

    I really wish people weren't so vague when they teach people to drive stick. Teach her about how the clutch works and it's friction point. Every time I've ever done this with people they get it 10 times quicker. Also, in this car she doesn't even need to give it gas to get it going. Everyone learning stick should first practice on getting the car to move withOUT giving any throttle.

    @@stanlee5465 that's the way the instructors teach how to move a car at the driving school here in Brazil. And just to sum up, carbureted cars needs to push the gas pedal and release the clutch gently to move them. Modern cars with electronic injection you just need to release the clutch pedal smoothly and when the car begins to run, you can pull off the clutch and push the gas pedal

  • @benterry2681

    @benterry2681

    Yeah, they explain what to do with the pedals without knowing what you are actually doing to the car and that makes is feel like you are carrying out a random sequence of moments to start your car. Though unless you have a big engine or diesel you will need gas to get it going as there isn't enough torque.

    I concur, driving manual is a rite of passage, and all sporty/small cars should be manual. Also, trucks. But for driving in congested traffic? No thanks! Gas cars will become a novelty for just anachronistic folks once the EV Dominion takes over in a few years.

    António Almeida Firstly CVT is unreliable so I wouldn't recommend them yet they still sell a lot of cars with them. As you mentioned MOST people choose auto trans, even in sporty cars when available. Manual trans is going the way of dinosaurs because it is just that. People will look back with nostalgic eyes at the manual but they are cumbersome and more dangerous to drive in winter. As I mentioned, manual trans can be fun for some but 95% of people prefer auto trans for a variety of reasons. There is no longer any reason to get a manual trans other than it is cheaper. Manufacturers rarely cater to 5% of potential customers. Numbers will continue to dwindle.

It was still so new and clean, it went back in after an engine upgrade, no discoloration on the flywheel either. If there were any problems the new engine would have ripped it up on the first full throttle run. You really have to be intentionally hard on a clutch (slipping it unnecessarily) or have one that is too weak to begin with to have issues.

But then you can not use stickshift vehicles on public roads So you will see such videos as here not from Germany I think it is better to learn from the beginning to drive stickshift greetings from Germany

    Also it should be noted that we’re personally interested in cars and are willing to learn about them. There are plenty of things you and I don’t care about and don’t really understand. People who don’t care about cars are no different. It has nothing to do with intelligence. There’s many people much smarter than both of us, but don’t care about cars or learning manual, just the same that we may not understand a lot about inner workings of computers and processors but use them everyday.

    @elektro30007 жыл бұрын

    Doug, I'm sure that's how you were taught to drive a manual, and yes that's how I was taught to drive a manual. But that really is not the best way because it skips over the most important point about manual transmissions...learning the clutch engagement point. Before teaching how to balance the clutch and throttle to start rolling, just have the person put it in gear and lift of the clutch SLOWLY until it barely starts to engage and the revs dip, then clutch back in. After repeating that a dozen times, the student won't get surprised (much) by the engine trying to stall when taking off, and will have a much easier time feeding in throttle to match. And in a Viper with 488 torques, you're probably better off just teaching people to get it rolling by clutching out slowly with no throttle, and then teaching throttle later. The car will do it EASILY. Hell, it will do it in third, I'd bet money on it. I once tried starting a Mazdaspeed Miata in every gear without throttle and even in 6th, it would do it as long as I eased it past the engagement point SUPER carefully. And that car had less torque off idle than a mouse running in its wheel.

    I'm from the UK, almost everyone learns and drives 'stick shift'. If you only want to drive an automatic, you can specify that for your test, this is then written on your licence, and then you are then limited to automatics only. If you pass for a stick shift (we call it manual) you can drive an auto or a manual

    Taught my girlfriend on my 2001 Corvette last weekend. She had the exact opposite problem. She barely gave it gas, but kept dumping the clutch and stalling it. She did well once she got it moving, but each takeoff was a chore. I think the biggest "ah-ha" moment was when I told her to slowly let off the clutch until you could just feel the car start to move as the clutch grabbed, then give it a little gas.

    especially since the Viper GTS-R isn't the easiest stick to drive, it's got a clutch for miles and unless you've been driving stick for a while you wouldn't really know when to let off and Doug is a isn't doing that great of a job teaching a first timer, no offense to Doug it's just you can tell he's nervous about his car and that makes the driver nervous. He is over explaining basically and giving them too much to think about. When teaching someone who has already driven to drive stick you don't have to over explain like someone who has never driven. Let them go through the gears with the car off and practice. Also drive with them watching you for a bit as you explain the process. Then let them try and let them mess up. The car is going to get messed up a lot more from holding the clutch down too long with it on then it is from dying from too little gas. Then again don't teach someone to drive a car that has a couple thousand dollar clutch replacement. Though he probably will make more than enough for a clutch (and radiator) replacement from this video.

    KZreadrs make about .60 cents per one thousand views, a viper radiator is $800 on the low end and aftermarket is about $500, the tow was at least $60 up into the hundreds possibly. The Viper has a 10 cylinder and a T-56 transmission a tranny which is found in many bread and butter cars very easy to operate and the engine has a load of torque. The Viper clutch isn't as bad as you think price out a clutch kit for a viper then price out a clutch for a shitbox like a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that uses a dual mass flywheel.

    I wasn't worried about the radiator I was worried about the clutch and I've driven the Viper I know what the clutch feels like. I sold cars so I also know what nearly every car's clutch feels like. Oh and I learned to drive on a stick and taught nearly all my friends. She even says it when she first pushes the pedal down how far it takes to push it down. All I'm saying is don't teach someone (anyone) how to drive on this car, not that it has a bad clutch or anything. It's just don't put a beginner in a car that puts even some of the best trained into the ditch.

For example it seems she sees a big set of procedures to do in certain situations, when it only needs to sink in, and the understanding of the general processes at work is what helps. P.S.: I just realized that instinctively I would never look up "stick shift" on Urban Dictionary.

    It might actually be easier to learn stick in a car like the Viper because the engine is so powerful you don't have to shift as much.

    I find the most important thing to do when teaching people how to drive manual is to build their confidence. My friend was very nervous and rarely wanted to participate in lessons. One of the things I liked to point out (over and over again >.>) which I think you missed Doug is that moving the car from a dead stop is by far the hardest (basic) thing to do in a manual car. My friend felt much better after we did a few dozen starts. It's also important to try and explain what's going on mechanically, so the whole process feels less arbitrary to them. I also would've held off on reverse starts, it's just the same thing but it shakes the person's confidence imo.

    You can text in manual w/o any problem. It's not a smart thing to do, but if you do want to text while driving, at least buy an tactile non querty phone. In that way you can type and watch the road in the same time. Plus, your hand is low behind center console so police cannot see it.

    No stalling on the first go. I'm impressed. My baptism to manual transmissions was I needed a car and the best one available for the money I had had a 4 speed. Got in and stalled repeatedly for the first 5 or 6 miles after that I got it down.

    I think it's a good idea to tell your student what the clutch does first. Something like "Pushing the clutch in stops the engines power from getting to the wheels". That way they have an idea about why you press the clutch pedal and don't just blindly follow instructions.

    I find it super helpful to understand engine clutch transmission. clutch separates power from wheels. if engines spins wheels spin unless neutral or clutch. it really helps with the idea of braking and what your attempting to do with your foot in relation to the powertrain

    Nice! I learned on my dads brand new 2012 Mustang GT that he bought when overseas and I had to drive it back to my house!!! I had never driven a manual before leaving the dealership parking lot. Of course I stalled 2 times but got it into gear then drove home through the neighborhood so I could stay in 1st or 2nd gear!!! HAHA good times that car was so much fun to drive

    Great video, Doug. Brit did way better than I did while I was learning to drive a manual (on a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo). Really jealous of the Viper, I hope you fix it soon. Also, some of these other people commenting... you are outright awful. It is so easy to say mean things while hiding behind a computer screen. This is an automotive vlog, not some E! news segment that encourages the deprecating of other people. Let's try to not be so toxic when Doug has another guest .

    I find it's best to have the person you're teaching let the clutch out without touching the gas and just feel where it engages. Everyone always revs the piss out of the car before it engages.

    weinerschnitzelboy - Yeah, I've known a few people like this over the years. One of them said it best to me when I commented on his old, worn-out t-shirt - "Why would I care what anybody else thinks?" That's probably the big difference. If you have to "show off", that says something about who you are. If you don't have to show off... I believe it shows something GOOD about who you are. ;)

    the manuals i've driven will move forward without stalling if you just slowly release the clutch without gas, assuming you're on flat ground. it's a lot easier to just let someone get a feel for when the clutch engages and might stall out before involving the gas.
