I Tasted UK Kimchi Brands So You Don't Have To

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've always been curious about how good the kimchi I find in UK supermarkets is, well today I bought 4 jars of kimchi all from non-Korean brands to see how good (or bad) they are.

At university my Korean flatmate, made home made kimchi, it was delicious, sadly since then I've tried several jars of kimchi and packets of kimchi, they just don't taste the same :(

Baxters (a big established brand name here in the UK) have started doing kimchi now. As somebody who very rarely buys none-Korean kimchi I took a chance and actually rather liked it. Big punchy flavour and not far off the Chongga I often buy. In an emergency feels like it'll do the job. Thought it worth a mention for anybody else in the UK reading the comments.

Fascinating!!! I usually buy the 3rd brand... thinking that it's authentic! Thank you so much for setting the record straight!!!

I've seen a few Koreans add carrots to kimchi but it's usually finely shredded. I tried the last one. It doesn't taste like Kimchi but it still has a nice taste. It tastes more like Chinese fermented vegetables

Thanks for this video was useful, you’ve definitely stopped me from buying jars of kimchi, especially because I have never tried it before.

The Yutaka one I’ve tried before and it’s total junk. Best one is in H Mart in New Malden where they make and sell kimchi in these plastic bags for £1.29 per KG, real bargain!

In the U.S., there is also fake Kimchi brand that comes with a full of tomato sources...lol. It is not that hard to make original Korean Kimchi at home and make sure you don't need to have prawns. However, there is an official Korean Kimchi variant that comes with prawns; it is originated from Kangwha island but majority of Korean people don't like prawns in Kimchi.

I’ve got the same problem on the east coast in the US… although I’ve never had the misfortune of finding grey kimchi! The American brands are often vegan, or fine chopped, or have carrots lol. I finally found a Korean imported brand and it was really good and came in big jars for decent prices. I need a big jar because I’ll eat like a cup or more in a sitting if it’s good lol. But the store stopped selling it! 😭 Then I was excited to find a Korea restaurant that sells theirs! …but it was canned so no more live bacteria 😔 and it was $15 for a half a pint. Definitely not in my budget. I’m just going to HAVE to make it myself lol. I’m nervous. I ferment a lot of basic things but kimchi seems labor intensive lol

Way easier than you'd think, actually. Try to put together a simple mak kimchi or cucumber-based "oi sobagi" and then keep trying more recipes as you get more confidence and figure out what you like.

I made the mistake of making kimchi at home, loooving it and then months later buying supermarket kimchi.....what a disappointment. Having never tasted kimchi before making my own I was sure that these supermarket kimchi could not Korean approved. Homemade is always the best.

I tried the Yutaka brand from Tesco and agree its too wet and mushy. Costco sell a 750g jar of Jongga Kimchi for £6.49 which tastes much better.

I will preface by saying I’ve never had the luck to try proper kimchi. The only kimchi I’ve liked so far was the Biona one, I think you can get it in TESCOs. Hated the Yutaka one. Unfortunately I don’t have a Korean restaurant or shop close to where I live, but I’d love to have a crack at making my own
