I Switched to Apple 2 Weeks Ago... Here's How It's Going!

Ойын-сауық

I bought my very first Apple computer 2 weeks ago (the M3 MacBook Pro) and have completely switched over from Windows. In this video, I want to share how it's going, what I like, what I don't, and whether or not I'm going to stick around in the Apple ecosystem.
After 30 years of using Windows it's been quite the transition, but I've always been so curious about why people love Apple products so much. With the release of the new M3 chips my curiosity got the best of me so here I am, 2 weeks in with the latest and greatest MacBook ever... let's talk about it!
#m3macbookpro #apple
In case you are curious this is the laptop I bought:

The above is an affiliate link incase you decide to pick one up though I suggest bumping up the ram to 36.

For Photos/files preview on Mac via Finder, you can just select a file (without opening) and hit the space bar. This brings up an instant preview and you can cycle between ALL files in there that support a preview (usually photos, videos, audio, text files, documents, etc, even PSD, AI, and INDD files). Any folders or other kinds of project files will not show a preview but a simplified, stripped info box.

Additionally, spacebar previews allow you to arrow key around the files as you had wanted and there’s a widget in the upper corner of Quicklook (that’s what the function is called) to make the floating window full screen. And it’s plugin expandable to add new file types!

I thought that preview cycling only works properly with list view on the folder, no automatic row switching in icon view. I believe Snazzy Labs recommended an app to fix that.

For the clock, you can of course reposition everything, including the top bar, but what you could also do is just add a clock widget to the screen and put it in the lower right corner. Not the same, but at least you will see the clock when you look for it down right. As some already commented, you will get the full benefit once you have more than Mac. Go for an iPhone and Watch to start with. Once you experience the seamlessness of the ecosystem, you will not want to go back :)

Excellent video - Been a Heavy Windows user since Win 3.1 - but as you I bought my first Mac (Macbook Pro 36GB ram) a few weeks ago. It is not that hard to get used to - stil I work more effective on a PC - but that will probably change soon. And battery life - oh yes - that is one of the main reasons for the switch. When windows can run on the new arm processes it will be interesting to see the difference. About the price: My Old laptop was a 15" Dell XPS. More or less same build quality - and price level. So the expensive Mac's has to be compared with something as a Dell XPS equvilant.

I saw in your last video about what are the windows down the bottom. So in Apple you can't hit X to close a tab or a browser really. To quit the the app you've to open the app (confusing) and go to where 'File' would be and click quit. There's also a 'force quit' shortcut which is the equivalent to 'Task Manager -> End Task' I'm getting a new Macbook for Christmas but I did have a 2011 that lasted me for 7.5 years.

Great video. I've been using DOS/Windows since 1984 (got you beat there) and have spent nearly a year switching back and forth between Windows and MacOS. I had all the other ecosystem pieces (iPhone since 2007, iPad and Watch since 2015) and now I'm now squarely in the Mac camp with a MacBook Pro 14. Since you've already tasted the MacBook/iPad integration, you'll love the iPhone addition for a unified phot library, iMessage, FaceTime, and most any iPad app on your Mac. You should consider the M1 Max option you mentioned. No raytracing (if gaming is your ultimate goal) but the price savings are as staggering as the performance. Apple went all out to crush Intel with the M1 series of chips, and the M2/M3 cycles, while more powerful, are NOT maps in performance. I was able to pick up a third party M1 Max MBP 14 (32gb/2tb/24gpu core) unit with annually renewable Applecare+ for $1750. It is way beyond what I need for my business practice and the performance/battery life runs circles around my Surface Pro 8.

I have both Windows and Mac and tend to use my Windows computers more.than I do my Mac. As you mentioned with AirDrop, I use Quick Share with my Samsung devices, Note 20, Galaxy Book Pro 360, and my Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. So, I can share files easily, but you have to be in that ecosystem, much like you have to with Apple. You need to be in that ecosystem to utilize all of what Apple offers. With Windows, you can use a Samsung tablet with One UI 3.1 as a second screen. Just select the second screen icon on a Samsung tablet that supports it, like the S8 or S9, and then hit Windows+K and it will connect to the tablet, and you can use it on as a second screen. Also, gaming laptops aren't really designed with battery life in mind. The GPU has enormous power draw. Mind you, MacBook's don't have dedicated GPU's. Most modern Windows gaming laptop have a system called Optimus, where it disables the GPU when not using it. The Asus Zephyrus G14 with the Ryzen 9 can get about 12 hours of use when not gaming. I get about 18 to 20 hours on my Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360, but that's not really comparable to a gaming laptop, since it has far lower power draw.

As someone replacing their 2020 Ryzen 9 G14 soon, it’s never gotten anywhere near 12 hours of battery life. Brand new with low-medium brightness I could get about 7-8 hours, and nowadays only get 4-5 with light browsing, no active dGPU. Cant wait to replace it with a MacBook, I’ve never had a laptop with really good battery life. no it doesn't, safari has the issue with its audio video media engine, on most sites it shows frames only but in youtube it plays after moving 10s forward or back, it is, you can watch Chris Spiegl Safari: Video Playback Speed with Keyboard Shortcuts | Watch Videos Faster & Increase Comprehension video which is from 2 years ago, but still this safari issue not fixed, it is not the case with chromium browsers, so I prefer battery hungry browser over the so called battery saver safari@@TheSAHDLife

I don't game a lot, I don't carry the laptop, I don't have an iPhone or any other device in the Apple ecosystem. Should I save myself the hassle of regretting or shall I try a MacBook Air 15 M2 with 1/4 of the storage, less I/O, a worse display a completely different OS for 1,5x the price ? You could get a refurbed one on the Apple site with a return windows. Maybe try it out? The air seems like the perfect laptop, it really does. Hahaha! 😂 Awesome! ...I mean, I went through the same exact thing! 30 years of PC/Windows. I switched to MacBook Pro 💻 a couple years ago when the M1 pros came out. I had the same initial "break-in" phase. Even some of the same issues. I mean ,yes, WHY can't you just arrow through images in a folder?! .....But it's really just a use-thing. Like I discovered if I clicked on "gallery view" in the finder folder I could use my arrows again to flip through the images. and the whole "cmmd+delete" to actually delete something. I actually got used to the differences pretty quickly through - within a couple of weeks or so. And total "Fan-Boy" by a month or two later! Everything was just so smooth, "just works", and the battery life is killer! 🔋.....There's a workaround, or just a different way of doing the same thing, to get used to for everything with Mac. But it's just so good! I even went all-in and got an iPhone and Apple Watch.... I love how everything seamlessly just works with each other. 😃💜

@@TheSAHDLife .......Times flies! 🤠 It's been two years. I've been averaging about 20.5 charge cycles and have seen a loss of about 0.4% battery capacity per month. Battery condition reports "normal", and I still go ALL DAY on a charge. 🔋 This is probably the MAIN reason I love the MacBook - I work at home as well, and I like to sit on the patio, sometimes for hours. When I am inside, I keep it plugged in as much as possible. This cuts down on the number of charge cycles... But honestly, I don't worry about it at all... I've had no complaints. In fact, I will edit audio and videos, DaVinci Resolve, Audacity, while also having Photoshop open, working with graphics and editing photos, while also having 30+ Tabs open on two different browsers (Chrome & Edge).... ....and this is just a base-Pro, not a Max! It's SOooo good that I can't imagine having to upgrade anytime soon. Maybe when the battery gets under 70% capacity or dies 🪫 completely (In about 4 years or so) - LOL 😂 And even then, I may just put in a new battery! I have kept up on M2 and M3, watching all the YT video reviews and such. So far I haven't seen a reason to upgrade. Maybe when the M5 or M6 comes out! 👍😁 What we are seeing now (with all computers) is what I call diminishing returns on practical applications.... Going from my old Windows Laptop to the MBP 💻 I went from 30/40 minutes to render a video down to 5 minutes. A huge difference! M3 performance cores are supposed to be about 30% faster than M1. In practical use, it might shave a few seconds to a minute or so off my render time. I don't care.... With a practical application use-case, we eventually hit a wall. When you get rendering down to seconds, even if you improve a chip by 50% or more, it still takes the same seconds. A race to 0 zero? Now, if they double the battery life, or maybe a new design, or vastly improve something else, maybe it will be worth upgrading. But it's hard to improve on "The Best" ...The trackpad is best-in-class. Like you said, the chassis feels like a tank! The speakers are the best on a laptop. The screen is amazing! The keyboard is great - I just fly on this thing. And, as you mentioned, even the charging brick, with MagSafe, is just the best out there! It's really what a laptop should be and the best I have ever owned. I tell folks to go get a great deal on an M1 MBP 16" and save the money (vs an M2 or M3)! Plus they nerfed the transfer speeds on the M3 base models vs M1.... I think what's amazing is it's the "whole package", and how the apps are all optimized, and everything just works together and so smoothly! Up until now, I still had the Microsoft 360 (Office) suite of applications. I use OneNote on my MBP and iPhone. But I am switching over to the Apple apps, and finally cutting all ties... Google is another story. I still use a lot of Google apps though, and everything is saved there. I like being able to go on any device/computer/phone, with any OS, and get to my "stuff". It's going to take a while to cut ties with Google, if I ever do. I also "sign in" everywhere with my Google account. I haven't really tried out Safari... That's going to take more time. That might be my next adventure!

I needed a new phone and I had got the M1 MBP, so I figured "go all-in"! 👍 I have the iPhone 13 Pro Max ....AMAZING how they all work together. AirDrop has been wonderful. There is nothing wrong with Windows or Linux and these days both are relatively easy to use and reasonably stable. However, the thing with Apple is that they don’t want their users to experience unnecessary complications caused by software or hardware conflicts. They understand that for most people owning a laptop, tablet or phone is simply a means to an end. Very few SMEs or home users want to have to spend their time or money learning how to diagnose software or hardware conflicts. Most don’t want to have to search online for a way to download a piece of software to allow their mobile phone or tablet to communicate with another device they own. Apple are unreasonably expensive and use a very restrictive OS. However, the benefits of that approach mean that very few people who’ve spent a lot of money of an Apple device are unhappy. Apple knows that which is why they are so successful……it’s really that simple.

Yeah exactly. And the older I get the less I want to mess around with stuff... I just want it to work. I've always gone out of my way to get performance for a discount. But now I see the value in there approach. Like you said, it's not for everyone, and that's why we have options. I just hope the competition continues to step it up because Apple is really keeping the lead right now.

im fully into the apple ecosystem except for the mac. ipad, iphone, apple watch, airpod, have them all. Biggest issue for me is how much apple charges for ram and disk space. Ridiculous having the ssd soldered to the motherboard. Own a desktop with 4 hard disks, have gone through a feew generations of gpu upgrades. Then there is of course gaming. if you’re into games from battlenet, with games like call of duty and diablo dont think mac is a good choice. Apple arcade is horrible compared to gamepass. I found it interesting that Windows 10 has gained market share in the past 2 years while Mac OS even with the M series chips has lost market share for the past 2 years. I'll stick to Windows. It's always a flip flop whoever has the most advanced hardware, and most users don't need the most advanced hardware anyway and it will no doubt flip back to Windows hardware shortly anyway. There is way more Windows software & hardware accessories available, and people are getting frustrated with Apple's closed system architecture, in ability to expand memory or drive space, and ridiculous pricing on memory or drive upgrades at purchase time. It's mostly people doing heavy video editing that favor Mac's, and the rest of the world favors PC's. Look at the market share. And only a matter of time before the dominate video editing market flips back to Windows. PC's will continue to be the dominate force in personal computers as far as most of us can see. I prefer the choice of having the most software I can run, most cost effective solution, and most expandable option. I also have no complaints with the general operations of Windows. As an IT specialist for over 30 years, I've never found Apple easier to operate. I've been an Apple user since owning an Apple ][+ in the early 80s. Checkout the KZread video "Most Popular Operating Systems (Desktop & Laptops) 1978 - 2023" to see who the real Winner is today and how Apple is falling behind in it's installed user base.

I hear what you are saying. Based on what I've learned recently, when it comes to portable power and efficiency, Apple is so far ahead of the competition. And for someone like me, who wants to video edit on the go, when I started testing, it was night and day. I agree, most people don't have needs like me. But there's no denying that 3nm technology is so much better than the rest and it sounds like Intel is still years away from 4nm tech. Yeah if you want a decent cheap laptop, go Windows. If you want to build and tinker with computers or play games with a sick GPU, go Windows. But if you want portable power with incredibly long lasting battery, Apple is in a league of their own.

@@TheSAHDLife I wouldn't disagree on battery life. I think that largely has to do with what kind of tasks your doing on the computer and your settings. With Windows, settings for general purposes on some laptops can have very long lasting batteries if you selected the right laptop for that. Battery life is not a high priority for me, but tapping the full power of the CPU at times probably can be so I use "Ultra Performance" settings which lower battery life, but I could change them if I were on a trip for basic tasks. Video editing with decent software is probably easier to figure out what you need with an M series Mac because the GPU's are decent, but even better ones are probably available if you buy the right PC for that. I do play on doing some video editing on my latest Dell Latitude running Windows, but I didn't buy a machine with a high end GPU so my choices will be a bit more limiting. But it does support an eGPU, so if I do occasionally need to do some higher end video editing, I could use it with one. I'm not producing movies. Just raw video footage mainly, but I would like some professional looking titling. I haven't decided what to use yet but I'm exploring options. But besides the things you mention, there are a zillion other tasks done on computers, and many of them are done better by a PC than a Mac. But it all depends. One thing I'm heavily into is software synthesizers (VST's) using my laptop as my instrument for my bands. Getting 32 gigs of ram and a large 2TB hard drive as I have is incredibly expensive on a Macbook. Some sample collections use a lot of drive space, and a lot of ram is helpful too. But most importantly, a lot of my favorite soft synths I've been running for more than 20 years, and Windows 10 backwards compatibility (the dominate version of Windows) is far better than Mac OS. It would be highly unlikely I run run much software that old on a Mac, and some of my synths were never made for Mac as Windows PC's were dominant. In addition, optimizing your OS is highly recommended Mac or PC. And that means, disabling all kinds of things. Most people dedicate a computer just to that task. But with all this drive space, on a PC, I can run......more than one copy of Windows on the same laptop. I have a copy setup for general normal tasks, a copy setup for my VST synths, and Windows 11 too in case there might be anything actually use for that, and to try it out. I run a lot of older 32 bit software, and Apple completely eliminated all 32 bit software on my iPhone and I imagine, probably did the same with Mac OS. That meant over night, I lost 75% of my iPhone sofware and a lot of it was never made in 64 bit, I had to pay to upgrade some, and some operated so differently, it was like learning how to drive all over to do the same things I already knew how to do previously. Microsoft values compatibility with the past much better, so PC's last a lot longer in terms of what software you can run. There is also a lot more software made for Windows than Mac OS, let alone optimized for the M series chips. The bottom line is, I run a lot of things that can not be run on a Mac, and they run perfectly fine on a PC. I am a gamer too, but mostly retro via emulation. PC's are way better at that too in terms of availability, updates of them, etc. Most of the work I've done has been as an IT specialist, and PC's still run the business world, and likely will well into the future. It's best to stay on the same page and keep up with that. A lot more people earn their livings using PC's than Mac's. Maybe not for video editors, but computing in general. As I worked in broadcast TV running millions of dollars worth of gear a long time ago, I do have some interest in the current world of video editing, but it's not my highest priority. Also add to my novel, I setup additional hard drives as backups for my music software and general data. Most portable laptop stands that I'd want to carry to shows don't have room for an external drive. What happens when your Mac main drive crashes? You can't pull it out to swap out like on a PC and change it in 5 mins. I had to remove a virus on a Mac one of the last tasks I had to do on a Mac. On a PC, you can also connect the drives to a USB adapter and copy your data over to. There is no way to do that on an M series Mac either if your OS doesn't boot. From my experience, Windows or Mac, things can go wrong with either. Same baloney, different OS. I was amazed at how difficult it was to resolve some issues on Mac's when Apple always claims they are easier. Seems there are a lot more options on a PC to get out of trouble. I also find a lot more great support information online for PC's with tutorials that show you how to do almost everything. And a lot more people around knowledgeable about PC's. So from a support stand point, I feel it is easier to get help with a Windows computer generally speaking. With Apple, it's just them. With Windows, it's the whole rest of the personal computer industry.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. I have been a Windows guy for 30 years for a reason too. Just now that all my stuff is in the cloud and I only use a couple apps I just want my computer to work. Plus with Mac it seems like you CAN install Linux or run Windows too if you really want, but I don't run old software like you were mentioning. I love all computers! I was just happy to find that the M series Mac were more suited to what I need with the portable power. I had no idea they were as good as they were. But moving forward, I'll have my eyes on all the computers as opposed to one side or the other. Also I do have a NAS drive where I download media (for Plex) and back up stuff. It's easy to access on the Mac too.@@classicarcadeamusementpark4242

@@TheSAHDLife It's a good idea to look at all options, I agree with that. Although I much prefer the Windows platform to Mac, I'm still an iPhone user. However, I'm very disappointed in Apple having eliminated all 32 bit software, which was 75% of my useful iPhone software and I actually find my iPhone less useful now than I did a few years back before that happened. There was no upgrade path on a lot of those programs/Apps. I also feel Apple has "intentionally sabotaged" the transfer process of iPhone photos via USB cable to Windows. It always works at first, then mysteriously fails over time as the phone storage gets more full. Apple claims corrupted profiles, yet everything else works fine. I've seen this issue on countless iPhones. Transferring data from an external hard drive or any other USB device works perfectly fine on all these same PC's. As we use our iPhone's as our camera & video camera today and take a lot of pictures/clips, this is a big problem. Finally the only good solution for getting around this is a paid iCloud storage account and downloading the pictures to the PC that way, but it benefits Apple financially. There is no excuse for this. And if it is true that the iPhone profiles become corrupted that easily on countless people's iPhones, it's not saying much for the OS! As for running Windows on a Mac, I want to say that has a lot of limitations. Many of the things I do including my VST synths do not work probably on a Mac running Windows through either Boot Camp or Parallels. And for that matter, I could setup another partition on my PC and run a Hackintosh to run most Mac software if I really wanted, but I haven't found a good reason to. Apple's Final Cut Pro might be a reason for some, but there are good video editors for PC's like Adobe Premiere and most of the others if you have the right kind of GPU setup for it. There are also PC laptops that are comparably powered to the M series Macbooks, with a durable shell & screen, comparable battery life, weight and "comparable everything" and reasonably priced too. Take a look at the ASUS Zenbook 14 available with the Intel 14th gen processors. Stacks up very well to the Macbooks in almost every feature/category. Not the laptop I currently need for my needs, but for all the so called advantages to the M series in a PC, this looks like an excellent Windows alternative with the many advantages of Windows over a Mac.
