I Stopped Using CASCADE Dishwasher Detergent, And Here's What Happened...

Originally recorded January 21, 2023.
Someone gave me this container of Cascade dishwasher detergent "ActionPacs" because they claim it didn't work (well) in their machine. While I consider this to be user error, it was gifted nonetheless.
So I tried it out in my dishwasher, and it did achieve reasonably good results. Difference in about 25 years between the original owner's machine and mine. However, since these are designed to be "toss and go", it should work with a modern machine. I'm sure with a different user, they would have worked fine.
But at what cost????? And what are you getting for your money? These "ActionPacs" have 3 chambers in them with 3 different color liquids. Nowhere does it explain that purple has this function, green has this function, and blue has that function. Chances are good that each one is the very same liquid, just colored differently. This pack has a "warehouse club" value (a paid-membership value, that is, it costs you money to even be able to buy it, not accounted for in this video) of $23. But still, what are you getting for your money?
On the package, it boasts that Cascade is the #1 detergent, recommended by many different manufacturers. The reason why it says that is due to CO-MARKETING AGREEMENTS. That means each company is lining the pockets of the others. Cascade is the #1 detergent on the market, otherwise known as the "Leading National Brand", because THEY PAID FOR IT TO BE #1, NOT BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY IS!!!!! So your hard-earned dollars are simply paying for their advertising and marketing, and to keep them as "#1". By buying this product, you support false advertising!
Is it a good product? Yes. Does it work well? Yes, when used as directed. So I stopped using it.
Aren't there a number of different brands of dishwasher detergent out there? Have you ever tried any of them, and used them as directed? The answer is yes, and probably not. Most people buy Cascade because their mother always bought Cascade, and never had a problem with it. You need to think for yourself as an individual, and try products for yourself, to see how they work.
So I went to Target and I bought their cheapest detergent, the "Smartly" brand dishwasher detergent powder. I used it as directed. And the dishes not only come out clean, but sparkling, just as you'd hope would happen. Not to mention, with the powder detergent (or a liquid, or anything not in a "pac", you can put detergent (if you wish) in the pre-wash dispenser of your dishwasher to allow for better cleaning. I use this powder in a half-dose, that is to say, the total amount used would fill one chamber in my dishwasher, so I fill each one with half the amount. That's what it was designed for, and you should use that feature, something that is impossible to do with a "pac".
Unfortunately, there is no direct comparison as to how many loads you get between each one. In my guesstimation, I buy about 3 of these boxes of powdered detergent a year, at a price of about $5 each, for a total of $15. So I get the same performance, for $8 less a year, simply by not buying into false advertising, and my dishes are clean and sparkling just the same. It's easy to save money by simply not "following the herd".
In this day and age, Corporate America and the big conglomerations, will lie, cheat, and steal their way through business, stealing your hard-earned dollars. There are no holds barred. So it up to you, as a consumer, to vote with your wallet.
Another interesting fact is that the "Smartly" brand detergent from Target offers a 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. Cascade, the #1 Leading National Brand, makes no such claim! (I am sure, however, that if you have a problem with their product, they will gladly send you coupons for more of their inferior product, that no store will readily accept.)
These days, since the store brands, generic brands, and "no-frills" brands out there do not have a big advertising campaign, they can spend the money to make their products work better. Time and time and time again, I have found that many of the lesser-known brands work AS GOOD AS, or EVEN BETTER THAN, the "Leading National Brand". Don't buy into it. Save a few dollars here on detergent, a few dollars there on something else, and soon enough, you will have more extra money than you know what to do with.

I've actually seen several new dishwashers recently recommending Finish detergent. I wonder if Cascade is losing it's grip on paying the most to be rated #1. My mother used to use Cascade Platinum in FL but it was for a very good reason. In FL there is a lot of lime in the water and no matter what detergent she used, all her glasses came out foggy white except if she used the Cascade. That was the only product she found that would get rid of that white film. I think they discovered that it works because they got a free sample pack in the mail that had 2 or 3 pods in it. I always used to use Electrosol because you could buy the powder in a big bucket at BJ's with a coupon and it was a really good deal. Once Electrosol changed to Finish the buckets went away and everything went tabs. I tried the Finish Powerball tabs once in my 1982 Maytag. Only once. When the detergent door opened and the tab dissolved my dishwasher started puking suds all over the kitchen floor. It was then I knew I had f**ked up. I decided that dishwasher pods are designed for modern dishwashers that gently pee on your dishes for three hours and not for machines that actually generate a forceful spray action. I took the tabs back and returned them and have never used anything but powder in that machine since. I generally use Walmart Great Value detergent in my dishwasher. I used to occasionally get Market Basket store brand powder detergent but that has been gone since the beginning of the pandemic. They have at times replaced it on their shelf with Finish powder which I had never seen before and I used that a few times when I didn't want to make a special trip to Walmart just for detergent. It works as good as anything and was cheaper than Cascade. The reason Dawn is on the Cascade package is because Proctor and Gamble make both so it costs them nothing to put it there. The real problem your friend had was probably that she had a new modern washer and no brand of detergent is going to make it clean well because it uses too little water and generates insufficient spray pressure to effectively clean anything. Ask me how I know about that.

Well you are doing the right thing for sure! There are some cases where Cascade will do a better job, depending on water quality. Agreed though, the old dishwashers actually worked, the new ones have a "weak stream". I realize that P&G makes both products. Different departments or company divisions, and internally, I bet money changes hands. Incidentally, these "pacs" also created a lot of suds in my machine, but not enough to spill out.

That's the whole point. They're not selling a bad product, but there is far better out there for a lot less money. These companies pray on big, fat, dumb, American consumers. Dumb is the key word, the general public is dumb as rocks and will fall for just about any trick or ploy. Many of these companies are hanging on to their heritage of being #1 for many years. They charge exorbitant prices for their inferior product. And I do mean inferior. Another shining example of this is Hellmann's mayonnaise. Many Americans grew up on that stuff. Their formula has changed, they refuse to acknowledge that. They are using inferior ingredients. The quality has suffered. You end up with a product that appears just like it used to be when the jar is opened, but doesn't last long at all. For anyone who speaks out, they will gladly apologize and send coupons out for free replacement products to hush the customer. Almost like a hush clause in a lawsuit, they are so quick to send out anything to hush the customer because they don't want their secret out. Well I let their secret out in a video I made a good 8 years ago, and still get comments to this day on it of people agreeing.

I was in my local Costco recently and saw this same package being sold for the same price you quoted. Around 25 cents per pac. I saw many people with them in their carts. I walked down the aisle 10 feet and found Finish Quantum Tablets being sold for 13 cents each! They work just as well! I truly miss the old Cascade powder with Chlorine and Phosphates and also Finish made by Ecolab here in the Twin Cities which had the same components. These detergents worked AMAZING and were worth the money.

PERFECT! You have the right idea! It's the WATER that does the washing, the detergent is there as a surfactant, essentially making the water droplets smaller. Same principle as in a clothes washer. Yes, I saw that video when it came out.

I bought the Costco Kirkland brand of dishwasher detergent pods. I'm really happy with them! My dishwasher is 21 years old and I think it's running on borrowed time. It's a KitchenAid by Whirlpool 2002 the year bought. I only use it once a week and the only repairs the hinges that hold the door that have broken twice and a thermal fuse. When the supporting door hinges broke the door felt like I was lifting a coffin.

I have a $50 for Target, so I can stock up for cheap as free, scores! I have some vintage Cascade that works well, but not too impressed with the modern version. If I really want to get things perfectly clean, I'll break out the fryer boil out powder, with phosphates. I'll typically make sure to have the pipe primed with hot water, before running the dishwasher to ensure the hottest water possible. Takes a few minutes, especially in the winter. Many years ago, I used the Equate brand dandruff shampoo, 100% money back guarantee. One day, the formula was changed, and burned my scalp. Took it back, got my money back, no problem. I've always had good luck with Up and Up/Smartly product. When I bought the GE dishwasher, it had a sample pack of Finish in the instruction bag.

Oh good! Definitely give it a shot, see how it works for you. I bet your GE will be pretty happy with it. Yes, the fryer boil out powder is some good stuff. I read about it, seems to be mostly TSSP, which you can buy alone and probably have excellent results for less. Around here, I told the wif there are 2 rules in the kitchen: 1. Any silverware, either in the drainboard, or put in the dishwasher, is always loaded business end DOWN. I had an accident with a fork that had its tines sticking up years ago. 2. Before running the dishwasher, run the sink as hot as it will go for a minute or so. We found this one out "the hard way" when we moved in. The dishwasher took on water and sat there for a really long time before it did anything. It was heating the water, and it just took forever if it wasn't already pretty hot. Aldi's got some dandruff shampoo that's not bad. The best in my opinion is Selsun Blue, but that's not cheap, and pretty powerful. Every once in a while I'll splurge on that.

Hey man, so I get your POV on it: it bothers you that the cost of this product seems unreasonable and you want your voice to be heard. That's the beauty of freedom of speech. However, I'm not sure that labeling those of us who would (and do) buy this product as "...dumb Americans..." is really the way to win people over to your side. There are just too many moving parts in the decisions people make to make a genralized statement like that. I don't have a huge income. Yet after all the grief I've been through in spending money on different brands of dishwasher products that don't work, I have been happy since I started using these Cascade actionpacs. As you pointed out, they *do* work well. As you also pointed out, the fine print is on the container, as it should be. It's there to be read and understood so people can make a more informed decision in their purchase. The ploys and schemes of the ways companies market their products have been going on for over a century...and yes, they work on people who haven't been properly educated about them. But I'm fairly confident that those who *are* aware of it tend to make choices about what to buy and how to spend their hard-earned money as wisely as possible. I don't feel any shame in buying both name brand and generic/store brand things as I see fit. I think if you look deeper down the rabbit hole, you'll find that nearly everything is overpriced, with few exceptions. Even "clearance" items are usually priced to still turn a profit for the store (which is needed to keep retailers in business, too). Again, I see your viewpoint. But perhaps in future similar videos, if you could refrain from implying that American consumers are incapable of discernment from marketing strategies, I'm sure it would be appreciated. 😊

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

Having dealt with the general public for years, I have a very low opinion of the average American. I worked in retail electronics for years so I saw them all. Oftentimes they'd come in to see the latest printers with separate ink tanks (that just came out at the time). Every single one of them thought they were going to save money on ink. But that's what's marketed. The truth of the matter was, the printer manufacturers are a business, like anyone else. Their job is to turn a profit. *NOT* customer service. And especially not to do anything that would ever hurt their bottom line. Not a single customer could see that. I use the term I use as a "colloquialism". Of course there are educated consumers. But they are few and far between. Occasionally I'd have a customer that pointed something out even I was not aware of, or knew a tremendous amount more than I did. So what I'd do is shut up and listen. If you're happy with Cascade, that's great. If you have "played the field" and found it works for you, that's even better. There never is a one-size-fits-all solution. That's why a lot of things are marketed now as "one size fits most". Still, there are inherent flaws in this dosing "technology". Years ago we had powder and that's what we used. Nobody ever had a problem with it. Of course the machines did an excellent job as well, that plays a huge part of it. With dishwashers, there is also room for user error. Like I had stated, the party who owned this package originally claimed it did not work for them. But they also refused to run a load unless everything was packed in there like sardines. There needs to be room between the dishes and other articles being washed so the water and detergent and pressure can do its job. That clearly was user error, and not necessarily the fault of this detergent. However, that leaves a bad mark in their mind on this brand. Cascade makes a good product. But again, it's profit-driven, not customer satisfaction driven. They are so quick to hush-hush any customer who had a poor experience with their product. It's worth the small outlay of money and loss of profit to prevent their (ironically) _dirty_ secret out. I had a much older video where I debunked Hellmann's/Best Foods mayonnaise. Unilever, the parent company, *cloaked* the poor reviews by grouping their jarred mayonnaise with their squeezy bottle mayonnaise. People were enamored with the squeezy bottle so the product was rated very highly. This was DELIBERATE. There is no question about that. While my perception of the public has not changed, nor will it ever, your comment has been duly noted, and I appreciate the constructive criticism. That is always welcome on my channel, and for that, I thank you.

i switched back to liquid detergent, we were finding pack reside and chemicals on the dishes when the packet would half disolve inside or get stuck to dishes. dishwashers are weird, you should watch the "technology connections dishwasher" video for more fun, they actually rinse off dirt breifly, then wash again and recirculate dirty water to wash the dishs, then rinse the dirt off at the end with clean water, for 3 cycles only the one mid cleaning cycle uses the detergent,

The packs suck. It's a new type of detergent that's made for "today's busy lifestyle", as if putting liquid or powder detergent in your machine for 5 seconds is too much time. Complete waste! As Technology Connections demonstrated, new machines take a tiny amount of water and switch between the wash spray arms. Ridiculous!

I've used those before and the and they were OK. I started to use powdered detergent from the finish brand and it just worked. I've actually had more issues laundry detergent, I'm not sure if it's my POS washing machine that claims to be energy efficient that drains and refills the tub 7 times. but with that I uses the infamous candy detergent known as tide pods and I remember there was a sticker or something on the lid that tells you to use 1 for a small load, 2 for a medium load, and 3 for a large load. Most of the time it works but occasionally it doesn't work the best on something that reaks or has nasty strains. At that point I tried to use 4 packets and then just went with a commercial liquid detergent that is way more effective. I decided to stop using the Tide pods because I felt they were a gimmick and personally didn't think they were worth it.

Wow, look at that! The NUMBER 1 RATED BRAND IN AMERICA and it just worked _OK???_ *EXACTLY* my point! The pods, pacs, packs, toss n' go's, flings, whatever they want to call them, they ARE a gimmick, just another way to sell their inferior detergent. For the laundry right now, and for the past year, I've been using a big tub of powdered America Fresh. Never heard of it? That's because it's not well known, but you can Google it and find it. It works perfectly fine.. The only problem is, I am now running critically low on it, so it's time to restock. Might go with FOCA this time, not sure yet. FOCA isn't the greatest detergent out there, but it is cheap. If you add a small amount of good detergent with it, it makes it just as good. I have some cheap liquid dishwashing soap. Kind of thin and watered down, not really great quality. Had about a dozen bottles of the stuff and it wasn't working well. At the Lidl store here, they sold a container of Castile soap, Castile soap is made from olive oil is about all I can tell you about it. Pretty thick and viscous. A little of that mixed with that low-end dishwashing liquid gives you "Dawn performance" at bargain basement prices.

I can tell you this: When one of these "pacs" are used in my dishwasher, I can HEAR the difference. Same sort of thing, starts off strong, and then reduces down. The reason that is happening inside the machine is SUDS, something that should NEVER happen with dishwasher detergent, that's the whole point. Truth be told, I was also "given" a bottle of Cascade lquid dishwasher detergent (from an estate). Besides the fact that the liquid works a lot better and does not produce the suds, one thing I have started doing years ago is to ONLY use half the amount of detergent. I do this with any brand, any type. I still get exemplary results. I don't think your coutertop hero is damaged, just discouraged. Switch brands, use less, and you'll both be happy.

Hey Jay. I actually received a coupon for a free Tub of Cascade Platinum, years ago, when I bought a new dishwasher. Of course, I redeemed it, because, who wouldn't? Anyway... Using it in real life, turned out to be a bad idea. I have Soft Water (Just as MUCH of New York does) and for me, it would create so much excess foam, that the dishwasher motor in two different machines, would start to seize up in the main wash cycle. You'd notice, from outside the door... that it was noticeably quieter while running. And while the dishes looked Okay... when they came out, some things were left behind, by the detergent in the wash process. It just wasn't an effective clean, and I KNOW those suds are BAD for the water pump. Since than... I have exclusively used Cascade Powder with Phosphates, or Cascade Complete Powder from Target, as well as a Chlorinated Dishwasher GEL from time to time. I have had HORRIBLE luck with that Smartly Powder, which actually left a nasty film on everything, overtime. But... oddly enough, the Great Value Powder from Wal-Mart, gave me great results that Target's didn't. The point that I have learned is... Nothing Beats a Powder or Gel, for most people. And I actually calculated it. You get 43 uses out of a 75oz Box by just filling the main wash cup. 28 If you fill BOTH Cups.

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    Жыл бұрын

Sure, you never look a gift horse in the mouth. Same thing happened when I used one of these in my machine. A lot of suds. Not enough to leak out of the machine, but it was noticeably quieter. I even opened the door to check and indeed, there it was. Bad stuff. And, imagine that, from the # 1 Leading National Brand! I don't know if the suds really hurt the pump. It's designed to run dry for a short time because it's a timed drain cycle. They know how long it would normally take for it to empty, and then add some time because not everybody's drains are fully patent. If the WalMart stuff works better for you, that's great. The same here applies, it's the cheap store brand stuff. Not everything works for everybody, that's one of the reasons why there are different things in every category out there. Your calculations are correct with your machine, it is machine dependent though, one machine could have a larger detergent cup than another, or a smaller one. Taking your 43 as an average, what I do in my machine is fill both dispensers, the wash and pre-wash, HALFWAY to the line. So that equals the same. So if we double that, that's 86, and that's pretty close to 92 of the Cascade. Out of ONE box. That's a (rough) savings of 18 dollars, way more than the 8 I said.

I went to Sam's Club to buy their pods. Sam's Clubs was out of their product and I bought Cascade Pods. I started using the Cascade Pods, the "error 24" message came up on our Bosch dishwasher very frequently. I watched many tutorials on You Tube how to fix the problems of this particular error message. We had to buy a turkey baster to suck out all the water that wasn't being drained properly. I'm a huge fan of Procter and Gamble, but these Cascade Pods were causing me headaches. It took me a few weeks to figure out what was going on. @@apAvocado The main point is these pods are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Why use a gallon of hand soap to wash your hands when one little dollop will do? Using a powder or a liquid, you can control how much detergent you use. If you have a less-soiled load, you can use less. That's a good thing all around. Not only do you save your dishes from the harsh chemical, you save money too. And if you don't buy the leading national brandm you save LOTS more money. Kirkland is one of the warehouse club store brands. He's probably saving a boatload of money using those, but again, the pods are not a one-size-fits-all solution.

So whats funny is everyone thinks Gain, Tide, Cascade, Swiffer etc are different companies... its actually just 1 Company called Procter & Gamble. Also as someone who uses these alot, it works amazing compared to Finish and other brands which dont get my dishes clean ever and leave spots, leftover food, etc. In terms of the Platinum Pods they tell us to tell people its for Quick Wash 1 Hour. As for rinse aid, that's incompatible with the detergent and needs to be dispensed during the rinse cycle, otherwise it simply gets washed away. At 1 tablespoon, that 1-pound box is good for about 30 loads of dishes. That container was $23?? My goodness, I feel sorry for whoever bought that. I HATE detergent pacs, dishwasher or washing machine. They are more expensive, and for what? Convenience. Plus, does it ACTUALLY work better than liquid or powder? Probably not. We use both liquid laundry detergent, and liquid dishwasher soap. We use Cascade liquid but that's only because my mom buys it and it "works". It cleans fine, but so does Walmart's "Great Value" liquid that I have tried, which is 1/3 the price for the same amount. I will never purchase pacs, unless they can actually prove that they work better. Until then, liquid for me. I've never used powder so I can't comment on that. Not opposed to it tho. One other thing, dish soap. Dawn is the number 1 brand why? Because they paid to be. I will say, after working in a commercial kitchen, we use 2 different products for dish washing: We use a Sysco brand degreaser, it comes in gallon bottles and is amazing. We also use Dawn, but it's commercial Dawn, which personally I have noticed does make a difference. That's what we use at home (you typically don't find it at most grocery stores, at least the type we use) but all 3 of us have noticed a difference. It's like Laundersol, it's expensive but if you compare it to Tide or home-grade Dawn, it's not much more expensive, and it works much better. One quick note about toilet paper: I bought a HUGE package of Scott brand toilet paper, I think at Target, and I started using it on August 15 of last year (I put a note under my sink so I could see how long it would take to go thru the package) 5 months later, and I still have 6 rolls left, not including the one on the ring. My parents both INSIST on using Charmin that you buy in big packages at Costco, and it is close to $30 a pack, if not more. My Scott was $15 or $20 I think, and 5 months later, here it is. Granted, they go thru more of it. But I'd hate to see how much was spent on Charmin vs my lowly Scott....

Just found your channel, and subscribed. You are 100% correct! I feel like I just found someone who thinks like me. I can't stand these stupid EPA government regulations that make no sense and are destoying are appliances. I would love to see someone dress up like Mr. Spock from Star Trek and go to these EPA meetings and tell them "Your ideas are completely illogical". 😂 I grew up in the 1970's and have wonderful memories of my Mother using Cascade in her GE Potscrubber. I too remember the wonderful smell coming from the dishwasher. Where I live, water is plentiful and cheap. Electricity is also cheap. I bought a GE dishwasher back in 2012 and converted it back to the old late 1970's Potscrubber III. I wanted a more modern look on the outside with the inside of the older Potscrubber. I spent close to $950.00 converting it back. That doesn't include the $500.00 I spent buying the washing at Home Depot. It has the pop-up tower wash, the bottom spray arm and the smaller ceiling spinner arm. It has a water valve that uses 2 gallons per each fill. On the Pots & Pans it has 7 cycles (Prewash, Rinse, Rinse, Main Wash, Rinse, Rinse, Rinse) (14 Gallons of Water total). It has a 1/3 horse power pump motor. On the Pots & Pans cycle, it takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to wash and dry. I took some time trying to finding the correct circuit board for my dishwasher to operate correctly. The Dishwasher I converted was GE GSD4000KBB. I wouldn't trade it for any of these modern dishwashers we have today. By the way, I also have a 2012 Speed Queen Top Load Washer and Dryer. I still use the Cascade Complete Powder (4 lb box) that I only pay $6.00 for. So far, it works great in my modern GE Potscrubber. I was able to convert the Dishwasher because many replacement parts for the old GE Potscrubbers can still be purchased from online appliance part stores. I can't wait to watch your other videos!

Well well well, welcome to the club! Fully agreed, machines today are garbage. 1970s especially, was where it's at for machines, both dishwasher and washing machines. Not to mention detergent, they finally got it all right. Not that it wasn't before, but they had a good head on their shoulders about it, so to speak.. Your creation is one of a kind. A real "sleeper" kind of machine, masquerading as today's junk. Excellent choice for washers as well. Electricity and water are both quite expensive here, some near the highest in the nation, and I don't care how much of either that I use, provided the machine gets the job done well. There are indeed plenty of other videos for you to catch up on, thanks for subscribing!

Your missing a few points! I am an appliance repairman. Any pods for your washer or dishwasher are junk. Example 1. Where does this plastic go you ask? It builds up in your washer and dishwasher pumps ruining your control boards because all of the sensors failing. It also does damage to your pumps and motors. 2. These pods are high in chemicals driving up doctor visits. Dermatologist reports are up almost 200% this year because of the #1 brands. 3. The dyes are the color inside them which make a consumer buy them. Not good for the human body. Look at your food contents for these dyes also. They are poisoning us 1 way or another. This isn't grandma's food coloring for cookies. It is really harmful stuff! 4. Cold call! Stone Cold and Ice Cube should be ashamed for not doing their research before promoting such garbage. I lost a ton of respect for both of them after that commercial a few years ago. 5. The only Cold call is coming at the expense of life! Kids eating these pods and dying. Also people using these chemicals breaking out in hives or burns. When do we say enough is enough?

Thanks for the additional points, I agree with you. When do we say enough is enough? As far as Corporate America is concerned, the answer is NEVER as long as there is profit to be made. Money talks, everybody else walks. It's all about profits and greed; it never was, and never will be about safety.

There is no "plastic". The wrapings are made of gelatine or cellulose just like medicine capsules or most recently polyvinyl alcohol Polymer (water soluble film)

@@set3777 Yes, you are correct. Whatever the material, I have heard from several all over that sometimes the coating doesn't fully dissolve, or builds up. I don't necessarily believe all that, but under certain circumstances it can definitely be true.

@@jaykay18 I have stopped using Finnish Brand Dishwasher powder after I tried "Fairy Platinum" Dishwasher pods (that looks exactly like Cascade Platinum pods). The dishes and bowls and cutlleries are now much more cleaner and shinning. Even the dishwasher interior and trays now look like brand new. I now even put SS pots and pans in for cleaning. I always buy the Fairy Platinum Dishwasher pods whenever they are on periodic "1/2 price sales" so I get them cheaper than dishwasher powder.

Set. If you really believe that. Stick a tide pod in a glass of cold water and see if it dissolves. It doesn't! I've tried this experiment with the pods on the market.
