Takeaways from this video: 1. Listen to your body. 2. Neglecting sleep to be productive is one of the least productive things you can do. 3. To wake up early, you need a full night's sleep. 4. Marriage is taking its toll on Natalies looks (she even grew a beard)!

Well, of course waking up without an alarm is great if you don't have to be at work at a specific time... I'm a teacher and I have to be at school very early, so there's no chance of not using one, simply because (and I tested that during term breaks) I always sleep until 8 or 9 (and then the first lessons would have started already) if I let my body decide - no matter when I go to bed! It's like my body say "nah, girl, that's my time, I'm not ready to get up any earlier". My compromise was buying an alarm clock that wakes you up with light instead of sound! Much more peaceful, I highly recommend it :)

  • @shrishtiraval

Agreed! And that's exactly what I thought when I first watched this video. I rewatched it again right now and I realised that the reason he can wake up around 6:30am or 7am without an alarm clock too is because he has been a morning person/early riser/doing the same since the last decade (he said it himself in the video). Our body clocks play a huge part in this.

I try my best to not set my alarm on the weekends but during the week, despite being a morning person, I wouldn’t get up in time to get the things accomplished pre-work that I want to do. This video is great as always Matt but as a 7-4 Monday to Friday employee it isn't super practical! For my 9-5ers, parents, pet owners, etc, if you try no alarms on your off days (if you get those) but end up oversleeping that's from a BAD SLEEP AVERAGE! Your body is trying to make up for lost time (and who can blame it!) If you have a poor and inconsistent sleep schedule (5 hrs one day, 2 the next day, 10 the next) you are not going to wake up feeling great with or without the alarm. The consistent hours every night create higher quality sleep and a more pleasant wake up, not the other way around!

Love the topic! When living alone, using a wake-up light helped me so much, haven't heard an alarm clock in almost two years now! Those sounds can only drive one crazy. Programming a smart light bulb to slowly wake one up is another option and you don't have to buy an extra wake up light - minimalism!

Good to see you handle this topic. I’ve had the fortune of living w/o an alarm for years. For the past couple of years i had to return to the dreadful alarm sounds of my iPhone. If i may suggest a tip, what’s far less annoying than an alarm is the way my parents used to wake up in time, i.e. by setting a clock radio (station). At least you wake up with the sound of music and/or voice(s).

Best thing you can do to prevent laying in bed vegetating for an hour after waking up is to move your phone away from the bed. I put mine on a charger across the room. Go back to a traditional alarm, or use a smart device such as an Echo to run your alarm schedule. Also, don't change your sleep habits (much) on the weekend; It makes Monday that much more difficult.

You portrayed Nat's eyes to a T. Perfect. :) For the last decade or more I've been using an app called Sleep Cycle to monitor my sleep and wake me up gently with a quiet bit of music that VERY gradually increases in volume. If I don't need to be up at a certain time I disable the alarm function and wake up naturally, so the app just becomes a monitor. I find it works for me. One thing to note is that lying in bed in the mornings actually becomes difficult to do when you get older because your body starts to develop little aches and pains that prevent you from lying still for that long. Enjoy your nine hours in bed while you still can, because it's all downhill from here!

Yeah, try that with kids and a family. I love minimalism and self improvement. But all of that was gone after i started a family. i barely get about 5-6 hours of sleep at night. (When adding up every nap, not in one piece) Even though we dont buy much things for our kids and set hard restricts to grandmas and grandpas about buying things for them. To be honest, Minimalism is hard if u life with a partner but it is impossible with kids. And its not only minimalism its also the possibility to grow. To learn new skills, habits and hear inside you. We do not have familiy around and COVid did not make it a better experience. I lost many (if not most) friends, have health issues (despite living very healthy with lots of sports before kids) and have barely time for myself. (Both kids happen to sleep very bad and be awake quite often every night) But to give up 95% of your old self and loosing so much just feels bad and unfair. U have no control anymore and being minimalistic helps sure, but not that much how it used to help because its effect is reduced so much in a family setting where u cannot force the other members to obey your ideal. To sum it up: Is here anyone experiencing the same? I completely lost myself in exchange for kids and a family. (I do love them all and think they are the best and anyone having a familiy like this can be grateful) but the constant struggle on the daily routine, fears and anger about the healthiness of your childs and the world they will grow up in eats me up. PS: My wife is also very mminimalistic, not to my extend but definetely above the average. So our appartement is quite tidy and not cluttered but as we all know its not just about the things we have...

Hello Matt! I apologize in advance for my English. Resently i learned about the method of organization of tasks - GTD (Getting Things Done). This method is based on fixing all tasks in one system, which allows easy analyse them, which, in turn, help freeing from them in your mind, whereby leads to getting rid of stress. I think it's will be helpfully.

Anyone that still wants to use an alarm, I use the default android clock app on my pixel and the alarm sound is a spotify playlist of nature sounds. I have the volume max but it gradually increases. It's different every morning and wakes me up somewhat peacefully. When i used a normal alarm i would literally jump up out of bed with my heart racing.

Okay, the time has come for me to do this as well. I've been having sleep issues forever and usually if I let myself just sleep without an alarm, I end up sleeping 10 hours or even more. But I've never been able to stick to the "no alarm" thing for more than a week. So this time, I'm doing this for real. It might mean shifting my whole schedule around, but fortunately I don't have any early morning commitments and can choose my work hours flexibly.

I made it a goal many years ago to create a life without alarm clocks. Life is so better for me when I can ease into my morning.

I appreciate that my body automatically wakes me up early 💛 I have a daily work alarm that isn’t to wake me up but tell me when it’s time to log in for work 🤓 thankful I can do this because I woke remote now. Previously, I did have an alarm to wake up to get ready to go to work. Waking up to a jarring sound is so not a great start to the day. Even a nice calm sound is still not the best 😅

I haven't been using an alarm since I graduated uni. I guess it's more doable as a freelancer and not having a set amount of time to start, but I have always started working at 8AM just to build a habit. My body naturally wakes up at around 6 AM everyday and it's been great for me. I don't feel like I lack sleep. But even though at times I couldn't sleep at night, I still wake up at 6 LOL.

Is incredible how Matt is maturing himself (as we are), watching his past and making some jokes about productivity guru who wakes up 5 A.M. I loved this, bro! Deepy and funny lol

I have done the same experiment for the past weeks, it's wonderful! I am more awake than I was and have more energy. Here I was a coffee drinking non-morning person for 25 years lol. The freedom of being freelancer

Always done this. Naturally waking up is so superior, yes I need to go to bed an hour early than others but it’s worth it
