"I spent over a $1,000,000" - Chad Reed & Ricky Carmichael explain the private jet era - Gypsy Tales
Спорт
Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed were at the head of the most expensive era in Motocross and Supercross history where the athletes at the top level looked to gain an advantage over their competitors in any way possible.
This means that they were prepared to spend millions on private jets to give them more time training and recovering.

Motocross magazines used to report what riders were making but got away from that over time. Fans used to know what each rider made but now, zilch. I couldn't tell you how much any rider makes (salaried) at any team.

it also takes being born into a family with a big wallet, ive wanted to race since i was 5 and ive only just recently been able to afford a 250f which is already 6 years old and its BRAND NEW and im 25 and thats not counting gas, entry, food, runnin all across state and the country, its why everyone where i live races woods because theres not a snowball chance in hell your average joe can afford to participate in this awesome sport, so in conclusion the more money you have will = more practice time and getting better and when you work 6 days a week just keep you damn bike its pretty rough to even manage to find time to practice lol

@@jhonnyappleseed8802 tomac raced before he was 15 lol. I was racing in that era and remember him. I will say there were a lot of people with deep pockets that were racing at that time, 99% of them never even made it pro and their families pushed themselves to bankruptcy. Whereas a lot of people like us rode pretty much stock bikes and relied on sponsors pretty heavily. Now a days, there's no way. Everything from bikes to gas is so damn expensive. The amateur scene is really dead.

Anyone that hasn't spend a ton of time in airports for work doesn't understand how grueling it is. I've never flow on a private jet, but I get it. With the schedule they had to keep, it was buying time and sanity. Private jet or quit early was probably more like it.

FMX really boosted sales during the era they are talking about and racers were the beneficiaries. Which Factory Suzuki racer has sold more Suzuki product? Carmichael, Reed, Stewart, Dungey, Roczen? Nope add them all together and it doesn't even compare to what Travis Pastrana sold by doing FMX.

Most kids wouldn't do today what Hannah did back then. Hannah took big money but only for first place. And only four championships. His base salary was tiny. If he took fifth place he got zip. Where many of the top Riders are getting paid all the way down to 10th Place.

That's not Dyrdek in the thumbnail??
Great video. Everyone thinks athletes make money hand over fist but nobody realizes the expense of being the best at your craft. Pro motocross is one of the lowest paid sports and the sponsors and owners take major advantage of the riders. Do you think a top 5 nascar driver is paying his own way to the track? Hell no. Chad and Ricky Know that wastes time is wasted opportunity so they saw the benefit for the expense. That’s one of the reasons they will always be known as the best ever. They invested that money in themselves just like a mechanic buys the latest tools. It’s to allow them to stay at the top of their game. It takes money to make money.
Where are you guys?
