Ive been on the lookout for a nice pre emission machine for quite a while, found this one on Machinery Trader and it checked all my boxes, too far away to be worth going to look at so I took a leap....

    Its just occurred to me that I never discussed the Hours in this video, The machine had 3980 hours on it when I got it which is a bit higher than Id like but I talked to several people who said it wasn't hard to imagine getting 8000+ out of the engine and pumps so that should last me quite a while!

I did all the required filter changes, flushing tanks, oil change, lube and the like when I first got it. Fuel pump on my truck went out, so I went and bought this nice looking 2000 Saturn SL1 to get me by so I could work on the truck. So far I've replaced nearly every sensor in it, given the engine a complete tuneup with all fluids and filters changed and found out that the car has never had a new set of plugs or wires in it since it's been new. One of the previous owners had the tranny fluid/filter replaced about three years ago, but everything else they just let it go to shit. I don't mind putting the money into it, since I got it from 25MPG to 34MPG after the work I did, but it's the little things that make me wonder sometimes...

    When I was in my 20’s I worked for a logger that had two big bobcats with the steel tracks on the tires so they could get around in almost any terrain and a set of cutting jaws on both machines to cut down trees quickly, a lot faster than a chainsaw. I would run a cat skidder to haul the trees back to the wood chipper which loaded generally 40 foot trailers in roughly 25-30 minutes. I had never run a skitter before and was given the standard 10 minute walk around then told roughly where the cutters were working and start hauling wood. An old chain type machine took me roughly 1 day to figure it out and keep up with the chipper. The hydraulic cutting wheel tree feller didn’t show up for three years. I miss the old days.

    Aloha Matt. Get some 303 Aerospace Protectant and spray it onto the new tracks to make them last a lot longer than ones without the 303 Aerospace Protectant. It works wonders for rubber and plastic parts to make them last a lot longer. I use it on all of my vehicles around here. One guy even soaked a brand new timing belt on his Toyota in 303 and then ran it for 375,000 miles and it still looked brand new. He decided to change it out as he wondered if the fibers inside the rubber timing belt were getting weak. I use it on all of my belts and plastic stuff here and I am on my 2nd gallon jug of it. It may make the new tracks on the Takeuchi last a lot longer. The old ones looked really dried up and that is why they split. When applied onto brand new rubber, it helps to encapsulate the plasticizers in the rubber and that makes the rubber stay flexible and supple. Just a suggestion from someone who really likes the 303 Aerospace Protectant.

    On the Takeuchi track loaders. They have a history for the lifting pistons on the cab being weak or just not working. Most people tend to replace them with alot stronger ones. If you plan on doing your own oil changes on the machine from now on. perhaps making a changing pit or constructing a safer ramping system for changing of oil. Also for a Loader. 4,000 hours is not bad at all. Surprised you got it at that price. Your Loaders barely have any hours on them at all. You should be getting about another 20,000 hours out of the machine. More or less if you ran it 24 hours a day another 833 days. BTW Hope you kept the old tracks. If you cut them up in pieces that are semi easy to carry or move around. Then can then be used as traction mats. place them in your truck or store them on the trailer itself. So if you ever get stuck. can place some of them down and hope to get extra traction if needed.

    Attended a single day Donaldson Filtration class when I was with John Deere Engine Group. According to Donaldson, the number one cause of dusted engines is over servicing of the air filter. Donaldson said leave the air filter alone. They swear by restiction minders. They also said never try to knock dirt off of a filter with a wire mesh around it. The least bit of banging will cause the wire mesh to be miss shaped and it will wear a hole in the filter medium. The paper medium inside the filter expands and pulses when the engine is running. You'll never know the paper will hit the wire mesh until it's too late.

    For an old guy I've operated most brands of skid loaders going all the way back to the early 70's. If asked about my favorite I'd have to say Takeuchi since it rarely broke(routine wear) and was a dream to handle. I think they came out somewhere around the mid 80's and were instantly liked(except for the intolerant who derided anything foreign). In my experience I think the idler gear wear is unusual, I'd never seen that. For the years and years I've spent on Takeuchi's I wouldn't want anything else. Good luck.

    Only thing I can comment on is tracks vs tires, the tracks ride a little rougher but the machine seems to me, to be more stable when lifting near the machine's limit. It doesn't sway or lean forward like a wheeled machine. And actually I like the lift the cab to change the filter layout, as it forces you to look at all the hoses and fittings you normally would never check. So you should catch a problem before it is a big problem. I worked at a company that had truck, tractor and machine services figured out. Every time you change the oil on anything, replace the drain plug with a high flow hydraulic fitting. Or in stuff with belly pans a length of hydraulic hose with a high flow fitting. Get your self a good fluid pump, with the matching high flow fitting and suck the oil right out, never making a mess again. Hook the lines together and pump the waste oil in a drum, no more drain pans or dirt in your face trying to get access to the plug.

  • @TestECull

    @TestECull

    Eh, you have a decent idea but in practice all putting the oil filter there accomplishes is making people reticent to PM their machine in the first place. I saw some of that manifest when I bought my '85 F150 back in '07; it has the 300 I6 and the previous owners never changed #6 spark plug on the grounds they simply couldnt reach it and didnt want to climb up into the engine bay or get some extensions out. Thing had an intermittent miss and that was the culprit; that spark plug had worn to about 120-130 tho gap while the other five were in the 35-45 thou range one would expect. I changed all six...the othef five were about due anyway...and the miss went away. Put service components in easy to reach places or they wont get serviced. First thing I would do if I had this machine would be to relocate the oil filter, fill, drain ports to a place easily accessed by merely opening the back door where they should have been since day one. 15 minute PM.
