I solved the GoPro Overheating Issue, with a simple solution that requires no tools, and cost $7.48.

If you are frustrated with your GoPro Cameras that keep overheating and turning off, this video should be of interest to you. I have tried all of the methods that I can find on KZread, but they don’t solve the problem that I have. I film my fishing trips and want to capture each fish from cast to catch. This means that I have to film the whole trip. I use 5 minute looping to reduce storage space and to reduce time required to review footage.
I applied a little bit of engineering to the problem and came up with a very simple yet effective method to prevent my GoPro from overheating in the hot Mississippi sun.
I believe that I have solved the GoPro Overheating issue for my application.

Thanks so much for this video! This is the most useful engineering way to solve the issue. I have ordered my mini fans and will set up the way you did. Again, great solution and good idea!!! Thanks so much! I used my GoPro for Soccer Games and GoPro have never finished recording a single whole game. I am so annoyed by the unreliable product from GoPro, but as you know there are no many choice. I heard that the new DJI Action 3 has no overheating issue so I am really glad somebody has addressed the issue in their products.

@@jimdenson6137 Jim. I used a small fan attached to the opening of the battery chamber to blow air to inside of GoPro 6, like your second simple setup. However, the GoPro recorded a lot of fan noise, due to the fan is attached to the GoPro. the GoPro 6 has the mic at the bottom which is very close to the fan. GoPro 10 or 11 may not have this issue. Now, I am thinking to use a little bit bigger fan to blow air towards the battery chamber but the fan is not attached to the GoPro 6. Hope it will solve the fan noise issue. any comments or suggestions?

Thanks for this! I film tennis matches in the direct sun 90+F temps and this is a constant problem for me and i have been doing all kinds of stop gap solutions. The fan idea (sent a link) seemed ok but the noise i know would a problem, so your flex tube idea was great. I already have 3d printed mounts for external batteries, so im going to rig up one for the fan to get mounted at the bottom of the tripod and snake a flex tub up to the battery compartment and 3d a custom battery door mount for it. So thanks for the great idea! Of course the minimalist direct mount mini fan is great too!

Sheer brilliance! I've just bought a Hero 11 with MOD cage and it will be used for close up (POV) filming in a small studio under lights, even LED's in the amount needed generate heat. Though in the UK our summer temperatures never get to yours but, as any engineer knows, when you create something first look for where "Murphy" can wreck the idea before going to far into production. So, even though I haven't done any commercial work with the GoPro yet, I was already thinking of how devastating a shut off would be whilst in use . . and, like you, I had no intentions of lowering spec's to solve this issue. I am the son of an engineer and much of my working life has been using engineering disciplines so I was already thinking along the lines of using a "silent" computer fan mounted on one of the dummy hot-shoes on the MOD case and powered by a power-cell. For me fan noise is not an issue as I set up several microphones around the active area of the studio for content sound, individual sound from on-board mic's are only used for track alignment in video editing. So to see another engineer come to a similar conclusion doesn't make me feel miffed rather sure that my - your - solution is sound. As my father would say to me now and then . . . "Every engineer alive today stands on the shoulders of those who went before". Not a fashionable ethic in today's money hungry business but we are happy with it. If GoPro have any sense they would consider making a "replacement battery door with an in-built fan" with power from a power cell to both the GoPro and the fan by USB connection . . . but I'm sorry to say I won't be holding my breath! Great work Jim, you've made a multi-billion corporation look silly! 👍

I like the small fan idea, especially since you claim it doesn't affect the audio but I still think it should be possible to come up with a passive cooling solution by either attaching external heat sinks and/or making an aluminum mount that contacts the mounting fingers directly. When I feel the fingers on my Hero 9 Black, they are extremely hot. That means that area should be great for sinking heat. Also, the reason I need it to be passive external is that I need to use the internal battery because I use it on a hat, and I need it to be waterproof.

Thanks for this Jim, I'd been searching around to see if someone had already engineered a solution. I've recently started to use the GoPro Hero 9 in a static setting, on a tripod to record local gigs and have had issues around power and overheating. I'm working in a cooler setting (UK) so actually just removing the battery and using external power gave me 5.5 hours of recording (until the card was full on a home test). I used 2.7k 30fps with the max lens attached and the quality is excellent on a well-lit gig. I had been using the media mod case so I can connect an external mic (zoom h1n) but this would not allow me to give the battery opening airflow. I looked at several solutions including the original mic extension but realised the solution was staring me in the face I'm still using the media case but detached on a short extension lead, I'm not bothered how it looks as it's decent recording on a small budget. Wouldn't it be great if someone made a custom door with 10mm inlet and exhaust fans, powered by a pass-through USB C connector I've also seen videos talking about the mount being used as a heatsink and that also go me thinking that an integrated heatsink mount could be made to replace the standard one I've bought a fan and will use it to improve airflow, it's super quiet and you can feel the heat coming out of the unit. All sorted with minimal cost and great outcomes, thanks for the work you've done here. It's a great little camera and brilliant we can get even more out of it.

I should not have to rig an ACTION camera . The reason I bought it was to shoot outside . There is not an update that works or download . I am going to make GoPro replace these cameras till they get it fixed . WHAT has worked to some degree is using a Volta and running without a battery , , The battery in the camera is what's causing the problem but your dropping an extra C note for the Volta . Hi Jim, Lots of work done to put this video together! Thanks for the info. That’s a lot of work to setup. Check out Black Shark Magnetic cooling fan. Use a Ulanzi BG-4 (5000mAh) with integrated tripod legs or BG-3 (10,000mAh), skip the BG-2 as it’s old design. Then you can power the GP8 + cooling fan and you can run all day until your battery or memory card runs out. If magnets on cooling fan messes up your internals like it did to my Sony screen (flipped it upside down) then buy the non-magnetic one with phone clamp but it’s big. These are used for cooling down gamers on smartphones. I just use a velcro strap or rubber band to attach it to the GP8. You can’t see the screen but I use my iPhone and Quik app to control the GP or a remote I already have.

No fan temps up to 98 degrees the one on the truck I have on a magnet mount always shuts off in the heat of the day 8am to4 pm so I got a 60mm computer fan mounted on another magnetic mount that I can aim at camera it has kept it from overheating in direct sun and run fan off a 2000 mha battery pack runs both 1080 60fps on a 256card for 10 hours clips set at 15 min each I do like your complicated setup but that would have to be a permanent mount as moving that around would be combersim but a good idea to not affect audio quality the fan idea came to me as the cameras never overheated as I was driving as like a wind radiator but soon as I got to next lawn it would shut of shortly after I stopped the magnet mounts work great I know with a boat fiberglass but you could mount a piece of metal where you want cameras

what if (speaking from being a computer tech guy) you made some kind of heatsink which could fit somewhat into the battery compartment... much like CPU heatsinks on computers. Some fins could stick out the side, passively dispersing heat. Or a small fan could be mounted to it. It could also have a couple small plastic rails to allow it to slide into the battery bay without touching anything conductive. Or, if you're adventurous, find out where is safe to have "metal on metal" inside the battery compartment and make the cooling-fin cartridge part contact these places for even more heat dispersal.

I use my GoPro hero8 for playing paintball and recording my footage, at minimum recording for about 2 hours but at most I could be recording for 6 or 7 if I play a big game throughout the entire day. I find that my GoPro overheats overtime but it usually lasts me a good few hours because I'm not recording, I will turn it off while I'm walking back if I get shot out, but I haven't had it way too many times now where I've had an amazing moment of gameplay that I realized later on got my GoPro has turned off due to overheating and I have lost that amazing footage. This video idea seems exactly on par with what I need, that tiny little fan with something that I was thinking about as well because I am a computer technician and have looked at similar things, I just never saw a easy way to wire it up properly without the wires getting in the way all the time because I have the camera mounted on the top of my head and it needs to be able to move around a little bit, I do have a single USB cable running down my back to my power bank so I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out. I really appreciate your video because you are showing that actually can be done, a lot of other videos don't seem to actually address the issue just show how to turn your settings down LOL. Sat camera on top, same settings, oh and battery in, plugged to outlet as well. Recorded for 2 hours, until I stopped it. Was hot, but not as without heat sink. Camera only sat on top, worked better than expected. But also have issue connecting to Quik app on my phone. I pray and hold my breath it connects.
