It is actually incredibly satisfying to be that one empire who just sits and plays sim city for 90% of a chaotic game until the crisis spawns and, right as everyone else craps themselves, just says "Don't worry, this one's on me" and mobilises all that economic and technology growth. *cough* And then sweeps up the 'bad guys' for everyone until the whole galaxy is united...as vassals in your federation *cough*

To be fair to Italy, their officers and generals knew they weren't ready for a World War with other world powers, hence why they were bullying smaller nations like Ethiopia. The Pact of Steel was both an offensive and defensive alliance, so if someone declared war, the others would be dragged into it too. It's not Italy's fault that Hitler suffered from a *really* bad case of premature attackulation, as his attack on the Soviet Union can attest.

Germany attacking the Soviets too early is a common myth among history-interested, but not experts. The German Empire had a huge problem with fueling their warmachine, as they didn't have access to any kind of natural oil reserves and synthetic production was going nowhere. The idea was, to go for the caucasian oil fields and secure a supply that way. I wouldn't call it a "Hail Mary", but the writing was pretty much on the wall, with the United States gearing up for war in the background and Britain still holding on. The Germans expected Japan to also attack the Soviets from the East, and a serious war on three fronts (Finland!) would probably not have been sustainable for the Soviets. A potential peace deal with Russia would've likely meant supplying Germany with some oil until the caucasian oil fields were up and running in order to continue the war in Northern Africa and win the war over Britain. It was also the common belief that the Soviets would join against the German Empire in the War as soon as they were "ready". And facing the full might of the Red army a few years later, with more severaly depleted fuel- and oil supplies, as well as other casualties inflicted by the Allies in Northern Africa, over Britain and the Indo-Pacific/Asia was a scenario nobody wanted. And when it became clear that winning in those theaters was not possible anytime soon, the Germans decided to go for the Soviets and take them out for good. And it was also likely that intel about the industrial and military capabilities of the Soviets was sketchy at best. Keep in mind that Russia was a largely agrarian nation only 25 years prior - that kind of rapid industrialization and militarization probably surprised the Germans, even though we, as proud couch- and youtube-historians know about it today. So, without the benefit of hindsight, the invasion of russia was a strategically sound move. In retrospect, it's a questionable move, but it's hard to say what the Germans could've done better.

@@danielk5780 One could argue that focusing on the African theater of war would've been a better move for Germany, considering it was already occurring while Germany was at war with the UK. It would've allowed them to secure the oil fields in the Middle East without attacking the Soviets (if they won, of course). Rommel (rightly) felt that Germany neglected the African front, because most German officers felt it was "too far away". Stalin was also VERY much NOT prepared for war and he wasn't helping his own case, as we was still relentlessly purging anybody who could've posed a threat to him. He only stopped because he had a proverbial (and almost literal) gun pointed at his head when Germany attacked them. Stalin was able to pull his veteran troops from the East because Japan had no plans to attack the Soviets. If Hitler had focused more on the war in front of him, it's highly likely the Soviets would've been in an even worse position. Remember that the West was still very anti-Communist at the time, before Germany attacked. The Soviets got a LOT of help from America specifically, help they would NOT have received if they weren't allies against Germany.

@@LAZERAK47V2 That makes a lot of sense. However, there is also the argument that the british and american naval superiority in the mediterranean would've made it very hard to secure the oil fields in the middle east - because the Royal Airforce and, later, the US Airforce could've easily bombed them. The same also goes for the caucasus oil fields, but not that extent.

@@danielk5780True, but at that point, America wasn't at war with Germany, and Japan wasn't a part of the Pact of Steel, so even when America declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbour, there was 0 necessity for Germany to declare war on America. But of course, Hitler got a little too excited at the prospect of having another enemy to waste resources on and did it anyway. If the man had even an iota of restraint, the African Theater might have gone differently. Without having all their resources tied up in the East, they could've focused on strategic points like Malta and Gibraltar. Italy would've received far more support in the Mediterranean from Germany as well.

Probably because of Switzerland's mandatory military service, and their two civics require militarism. I would have given them citizen service, but that can't be megacorp, so I guess that's why they gave naval contractors and private military companies.? Switzerland's military service is for defensive purposes but it is hard to replicate that in Stellaris.
