I Saw The Skegs Off The Catamaran !

Ғылым және технология

Everyone who drove the catamaran using an outboard motor complained that it wouldn't turn for crap. Its no wonder. There are these skegs at the back of each pontoon. They act like rudders steering the boat straight ahead and you have to fight that every time you want to turn.
Turning with the outboard involves shoving the stern sideways with the vectored thrust, and that means shoving those skegs through the water sideways. A barn door moves through the water easily if you push it edgewise, but resists if you push it broadside to the flow. The skegs are the same deal.
After I sawed the skegs, Rich decided the little half inch nub I left should be ground off so fiberglass could lay over the skeg mounting flange easier. Aluminum grinds a lot slower than fiberglass and much slower than sanding paint. Eventually they got smoothed out with fairing compound and fiberglass was laid over the spot to make sure it could never leak.

Thanks! I force Rich to do most of the work, but he's been a good sport about it.

Fiberglass overhead is the hardest thing to do you’re really good at it👍 thank you for teaching us all 7:34

Overhead and on complex curves, use the thin chopped strand mat (I used 3/4 oz CSM). Wet the surface then stick small pieces up there, don't try to do too big of an area because the bigger it is, the more it wants to fall as you work it. You have to do a lot more layers with the thin stuff but it wets out and flows onto non-flat shapes the easiest. Letting the resin get a little tacky helps when you need to do a large piece overhead. Wear eye protection.

When ever you are cutting grinding or drilling aluminum, get some cutting tool wax. It will make life a whole lot easier. Looking forward to seeing the finished product, it's looking very good

Thanks! Soap works pretty good if you don't have wax. It keeps the aluminum from loading up the cutter as well.

@ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958 I use to use bar soap on the handsaw back in the day. Works well for driving nails also

You contravened my 11 th commandments don't use any part of the body as a mallet. It really chews the life out of the body. I am surprised you are not going to sail the boat. If you reconsider, go dipping lug. That is a great tune I guess it's a KZread freebie it would be great for a final film when my cabin is done.

I worked for my father when I was in grade school and high school. He taught me that if you don't get injured, you're not working hard enough. KZread has a lot of free music, but I only found a few that I like, so a lot of my videos have the same ones.
