I rode the 2024 Suzuki GSX-8S & the 2023-24 Suzuki SV650 to find out how the cult classic SV650 loved for 20 years, compares with the new kid on the block getting all the hype. I rode and compared them on looks, sound, performance, equipment, rider aids, price and which type of riders would the two motorcycles be suited for.

    1:15 with aftermarket exhaust,vtwin all the way,you also get that whistle in the v twins which makes it stand out even more.

    In 2023 I had a brand new grey sv650 and really loved the engine however it was a little cramped and seat very uncomfortable,the suspension has me out the seat on bumpy roads also felt the lights need led and totally felt the dash was dated. And in UK I felt is was looked down on and past it at bike meetings so mainly due to the seating and suspension I traded up to 8s in black..... looked fantastic and felt more comfortable and substantial,was punchy and loved the dash HOWEVER after almost 3000 miles a pipe came off the air box,then the cat in the exhaust came adrift and lost power and then it was running rough The finance company rejected it due to poor quality and I had a full refund Looking back I should have stayed with the sv cheaper,fun, reliable and loved the v twin

    SV owner, actually my 3rd that I use for commuting. Was going to trade in for the 8s, had an extended test ride but ended up with a new SV. I much prefer the SV, the engine braking for urban riding as well as the low down torque was far better.

    it looks like tou dont ride those bikes cos actually its gsx8s which here have better lowend torq and stornger engine braking 🤭👌🏻 at 5 k rom gsx makes 45-47 hp at whell according to what im found on strongest mode vs sv 650 makes 35-37 hp at whell at 5 k rpm 🤷🏻‍♂️ on lower rom sv isint better but still worse 👌🏻…

    @@amococ2487 hp vs hp at the same rpm = nm vs nm at the same rpm in regard to diffreences only at this rom dosent matter what you compare output be the same if ypu want know diffrences at spcified rpm 😉👌🏻…

    The quickshifter on my 8S got much better in time. That said, up shifts from 1st to 2nd are way smoother with more RPM, or just grab the clutch. Down shifts got way better after 1000 miles. Just my experience on my own bike.

    It makes sense that the downshifts get smoother, as the engine is also getting smoother due to the break in. It should be easier for the engine to raise the rpm for the downshift.

    I got an 07 sv650s and I'm gonna just keep it and I LOVE it. It's my 7th motorcycle that I've owned and it's the only bike I've yet to sell

    I bought the 8S. The GSX S750 is still selling in big numbers in New Zealand, as it is heavily discounted and amazing value for money.

    Congrats on the 8S. GSX-S750 is a great bike Suzuki couldn’t manage to sell it all that well in North America as far as I’m aware.

    The local shop has only sold one 8S, mine. They sell a GSX S750 every week. The price has been dropped to USD9,100 incl tax but pre registration. A lot of performance for the money.

    Excellent comparison, and I agree about the analogue clocks. Having owned two SV650’s I am probably a bit biased, but just on looks alone its the SV650 all the way - I am sure the GSX-8S is fun to ride but really don’t like the angular styling and feel the bike has taken a proper beating with the ugly stick. Factor in the price differential and I know which one would be in my garage (and may be again at some point).

    Thank you! I feel the exact same way except if it comes to personal choice, looks and sound have become less and less important to me over ride quality and comfort. On those areas, the SV wins on comfort but the 8S had a bit more pep! Still, i found the idea of buying an SV & developing it into a stylish modern retro bike to be quite an enticing one. If I only had the time haha!

    I would rather have the SV650. I agree with you. The SV now stands out as difference.

    As a modern middle weight street fighter the 8S is a much better bike in every way including value and personality. As a beginner or middle class retro variant the SV650's slightly softer power delivery, rich character, and classic looks would be my choice over a restyled retro 8S. This is what I think as the previous owner of a SV650 and current 8S owner. Suzuki should continue to sell both bikes!

    Having ridden both, I think suzuki should continue to sell both bikes and bring back the sv1000. Be interesting to see if it hurt sales of the gs8s - personally I'd go for it over the 8s because its not a parallel twin

    That "23 year old Engine" has been constantly being improved on the entire time it has been in production. It's about as bullet proof as you can get.

    Tooling and materials have been refined as well, and a huge supply of replacement parts and aftermarket support.

    Nice video. I have a 2023 SV650 and I modded it a bit to make it look cafe racer-ish with a nice headlight fairing with a windscreen, lower handlebars, round mirrors and a gruntly exhaust. I really enjoy classic looking motorcycles and it is the perfect platform for me. The 8s looks cool though!

    I've said it over and over. The 650cc twin class remains the 650cc twin class. A 776cc twin shouldn't be compared to the 650cc twin, because it's a bigger class, bigger engine, higher cost, slightly different market. Everyone has bemoaned Suzuki's SV650 demise, which hasn't happened because..... wait for it........ IT'S A DIFFERENT CLASS. But then people would immediately replay and argue that it's not. Please, shut up. Yes it is a different class.

    I love your passion on the topic. I agree with you though. It’s actually really good that there are so many differentiated classes. The reason I do sometimes compare across classes is because ‘class’ of the bike is not the only criterion from a buyer’s standpoint. They’re just looking to see if for a certain price range, which ones a better bike for what they’re looking to do with it. That’s what explains a few cross segment comparisons I have on the channel.

    The SV650 is still the better bike. Besides with the SV650 you can still do all of our own maintenance and repairs with ease and insurance is definitely cheaper, and that fact that you can’t kill the SV. Yet to be seen with the 8s.

    The quick shifter is fine. Smooth at lower revs and ok for a high revs change down. However at constant revs, use the clutch. The GSX S750 is still being sold in NZ at is outselling the 8S.

    i've heard that the quickshifter/blipper gets better after some thousands km ridden. 10-15k or something? not sure if accurate though.

    if only sv650 had proper suspension, brakes, led lights and a more comfy seat, it would be a no brainer. sadly, suzuki refuses to do it.

    LED lights may be on the cards if they keep it on the line up beyond 2024. The bike I rode had surprisingly good brakes for street but I agree there are way better brake set ups out there. Suspension would be a tough one, let’s hope they can figure it out. By the way, SV650 is available in limited markets so the sales volume may also have a bearing on that.

    I owned both in 2023 (2023 SV650, 2023 GSX-8s) , I found them both to be uncomfortable, both with terrible suspension. Otherwise, great bikes.

    I'd take the SV. It's one of the best small displacement v twins ever made. There are 4 billion 670 million and 12 after market parts available for it. It's still the king.

    Place the sv650 engine in the 8s bike with other muffler. That engine is absolutely incredible reliable and strong. By the way, who needs ABS, TC, gear indicator and more of these gadgets... You just open the throttle and burn rubber and your knee pads 😜🤣 wide open ✊🏻

    @@RiderXp thanks for the video. I've been riding 2001 SV for 7 years, no other bike has given me so much fun while being reliable and cheap to maintain. I'm considering purchase of the new SV, before they retire this great motorcycle. GSX-8S is not my bottle of beer ;) I mean, I believe it's a good bike to ride, probably outperforming the SV in multiple ares but as you said - it's does not stand out from the competition. Plus, it looks like a sh*t to me.

    The SV does not feel like a 400. It is much heavier than a Z400, and feels like it.

    It's relative. I ride a XSR900 & a ZX6R so to me, it felt pretty nimble.

    SV650 looks better and sounds better. I had one on 2003. Loved it. Such a fun bike. Never rode the 800.

    I highly recommend it. It may be hard to love the look of the 8S for SV lovers like myself, but the new platform is worthy of praise for the work they've put into catering younger riders.

    Cool, i have that same engine in my XSR900. The SV would be perfect for a city bike and depending on where you are, used ones may be easy to come by.

    @@RiderXp actually the tracer is not bad anywhere, but I want an SV for a second bike and a project bike. You can do so much with that bike because it is such a long running model. The V-twin is cool. You can make a Cafe Racer etc…. I am keeping the Tracer. I also have an old Vstar 1100, CRF300, and a Grom. Those bikes are getting sold so I can buy the SV.

    @alphajed7700 Well since I come from India and all the commuter bikes look like the SV I never ever thought too much of it here in the US. When i saw it at the track I was quite intrigued. For this video, I actually rode it and was blown away. My personal bikes are way more powerful than it but the SV is just mad mad fun to ride. I would highly recommend that you try and get a test ride when you get an opportunity. I am so enticed right now to get one for myself and ditch my XSR900.

    @@RiderXp Or go Aprilia Tuono 660. Or wait for the RS457. Trouble with the 650 class, the budget suspension and brakes. It's good enough, but it's not great. The 8S and 8R really bring that into the modern age. Similarly when Yamaha created the R7, they put great suspension and brakes on what would otherwise have been a fared MT-07.

    Well, suspension is an interesting topic. I can’t possibly capture everything I feel about that in the comments section but that maybe a good video topic. In summary though, after riding as many bikes i have and especially what I learnt at the track for the past 4 yrs or so, for performance scenarios, stock suspension rarely works at the optimal level even when you’re talking flagship sportbikes. Of course rider skill level plays a big role in that space. For street use, most of the times, suspensions aren’t horrible (of course there are exceptions) and adjustments can help quite lot if one can find a good suspension expert (which another topic for a video by the way) But the problem with mid or small segment is, either they don’t have adjustability or if they do, it’s inadequate. And that a difficult problem to solve for manufacturers for a small - mid segment price point. Yamaha R7 is roughly 9k in the US. Imagine trying to give it an actual good quality suspension. Good fork’s would cost a third of the price of the damn bike. So there’s that. I’ve come to believe that manufacturers are trying their best to make a good product but then balancing price, competition, regulations among the many things is getting more and more difficult. I’m surprised that they continue to stay in such difficult business. Just my 2 cents of rambling haha

    1999-2002 Original. 2003 Fuel injected, new body styling. 2004-2008 slight frame geometry changes. 2009-2016 SFV "Gladius" 2017-present SV650, with small updates (brakes, instruments, etc)

    The ugly tail end is due to government regulations. Like it or not, that tail end is required to be equipped for the motorcycles to be street legal

    I wish both of these bikes came to india especially the SV650 but now its outdated unfortunately despite being a brilliant bike . Suzuki India is lazy and stupid at the same time ; they are too happy selling Scooters like Suzuki Access 125 or Bergman 125 😑.Anyway where are you based in? UK?USA?Australia? You are Indian origin dude , that's why i asked😅

    Suzuki India works in a very different way. The only non-commuter bikes they had on the Suzuki India website last time I checked, were the Katana & the Hayabusa. I know the Hayabusa logic but of all the great bikes they make, the chose a Katana? And they’ve taken the Vstrom650 off the website, but I’m pretty sure the Vstrom 800 will find lot more takers if they can get the price right. Anyway, options are getting better for India in the future for sure. I am based in US by the way, hail from UP.

    @@RiderXp Different is completely wrong word to describe because they are the poorest in terms of yearly sales in Last 2,3 years especially in the bikes market . They got brilliant bike in Gixxer 155/250 and the V strom 250 SX but these bikes are horribly overpriced and the sales and service network is wafer-thin. Well the Hayabusa has a fan following because of Dhoom (2004) Bollywood film. The Katana I don't know what was their logic when they had Gixxer series of twins and inline 4 abroad which can sell in India. Even V strom 650 would have been great for India as there is a craze for ADVs here . They can also do a retro bike based on Gixxer 250 naked streetfighter because the retro bike segment is crazy here in India and we don't have a proper 250cc retro bike , suzuki could be the one but they are just as brainless as yamaha. Anyway I am buying a used Gixxer 155 2017 model because its a brilliant beginner bike, doesn't matter what people say. But Suzuki's action makes me think whether it will stay in India or not in future. Anyway its great to see a Indian doing well in USA with a KZread channel for Bikers. keep growing 🙌😌

    @aashutoshbhagat2677 Yeah I was being nice with my choice of words for Suzuki. Suzuki is actually pretty happy making a killing in car sales in India. Some people have commented that Suzuki pulled out of MotoGP because they were too happy selling cheap cars in India. I don’t think that is the case, but Suzuki India definitely seems to not be that focused on the recreational motorcycle in India. With Corporate you never know, the reason could be as simple as a senior. Suzuki India official with a complete different (again nice word for what it actually is haha) strategy. Anyway, I’m glad you have zeroed in on the bike for yourself. I do not know enough about it. Was probably released in India after I moved.     @@RiderXp Yea, as simple as that, don't get me wrong, the 8s is not a bad bike but Suzuki lost all that made them stand out, design uniqueness, a V engine, and lovely truly retro style and one of the best cafe racer out there sv650x.

    Agreed. I think they are trying to cater to younger riders who prefer that modern street fighter look. And maybe they will sell them. I didn’t like the aesthetics and was expecting to be disappointed with the P TWin engine, but i was impressed with the execution especially in terms of ride quality and simplicity. Not as good or cult deserving as the SV but tip of the hat to Suzuki for building something ground up when others are only recycling and doing ‘bold new graphics’

    @@RiderXp The problem here is that they are late to the party, mt07 has been dominating that place for years, so did the Kawasaki z650, i have a colleague that has a Suzuki dealer shop, and he's been saying that the 8s don't sell every well, and i bet that's the reason.

    I got the all blacked out gsx8s, and I love mine. The only issue I have with it at all is that after 30 minutes, my ass starts to get irritated but it recovers in about 10 minutes and I'm good to go for another half hour.
