I Remake An Odd 1878 Hand Plane Chisel Patent [Patent Remake]
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I fully remade a tool that was patented in 1878. This specific patent in on a very odd design which includes a hand plane within the handle of a chisel. You can see that patent document here: patents.google.com/patent/US2...
I decided to use brass and Brazilian cherry as the materials for the tool. I did not have any specific measurements to reference so all decisions on design were made through the patent drawing. While the final outward appearance of the tool is close to the patent design, I did choose to attach the brass portions by threading them into the wood plane body, for extra strength.
I have not made a hand plane solely by carving it out with chisels, so this was a large challenge for me. I did practice several times and found that purchasing some specific plane-making tools (plane floats) were key to success.
I found this patent recreation process to be incredibly rewarding and it was great seeing each piece come together. I hope to do many more in the future.

I don't have access to the woodworking tools I would need to make the grip, so I am holding off on the screwdriver.
Yes! This is so good, I love it! To be a real pro with this tool, one would know precisely how many taps it would take to chop dovetails, while simultaneously setting the plane iron to plane them flush later.

yes, as he was demonstrating it I realized the issue with adding a sharp blade to the tip of something you forcefully jab forward that often gives unexpectedly. I'm saying I think someone is going to get stabbed with the chisel while planing something and someone is also going to slice their hand open on the place while chiseling something. You would need to remove the other tool while using it or at the very least put covers on the blades. HTR should put out a part 1.5 where he makes the covers, they would help for storage too.
I can just imagine HTR sitting in a leather armchair beside a fire, bookshelves lining the wall behind him, "smoking" a toy pipe blowing bubbles whilst talking about weird and wonderful tools

I Iike watching you bring old tools back to life, whither its refurbishment or recreation. Thank you for the education and entertainment you provide.
The invention appears to be a bit of a solution in search of a problem, or an example of new invention that consists of combining two existing inventions, and almost invariably ends up doing both tasks at least slightly less well than the original tools. But recreating it was a fantastic idea for a project/video. I love stuff like this.

In your roundup/critique...I think you’re being a little modest. That’s a beautiful piece sir, a marriage of form and function which stays true to the original concept. As William Morris observed, ‘keep nothing in your house which you believe not to be functional or beautiful ‘...this is both and earns its place, bravo!
This WAS great fun to watch with a great find at the end. Thank you again from Holland!!
At 11:25 it appears the suggestive nature of this video continues - gasp!
Awesome workmanship! you're truly talented. You should take a look at the loeffelholz codex from 1505 where there is detailed drawings of the tools of their time. I think it would make a interesting video to recreate some of them.
Very beautiful. Finding the perpendicular to the tangent on that cylinder was very cool
I have been machining for 20 years now and have never seen anyone center a drill like that that's a cool trick I'll have to use at work good job on the tool as well keep up the good work I love the videos and never miss one much love coming at you from South Carolina USA
Seems like the kind of thing that would be sold in the novelty section at Kohl's.
Интересный инструмент . ОТЛИЧНЫЙ МАСТЕР !
tip, if you back your center out and take out the live center , you can use the flat face of the center barrel to keep your die square to the workpiece
Dude, that is a fantastic interpretation. It functions, and it looks fantastic. Excellent work and what a stroke of killer luck to actually find a near OG!
Now you can yell "Fix bayonets!" when you plane something!

Thank you for sharing. You did a wonderful job creating this tool. Truly inspiring.
Beautiful workmanship, gorgeous piece. However, I can't see a practical use for it. Combining two very useful tools to create one barely useable tool. Typical of many late 1800s/early 1900s patents.
@thisnicklldo

Seriously guys, as if this was the point. Your view on 'the best tool' is completely irrelevant isn't it? It's a thing of beauty, it has some utility, and I'm prepared to bet that in the hands of a craftsman could produce work of a quality way better than that provided by tool experts with whatever they knowingly describe as 'better'. Anyway, I don't see why it wouldn't make a perfectly good small plane (you'd remove the chisel blade to use it, surely) and a decent chisel. I'm reminded of a comment about, I think, Victor Barna, a British table tennis champion of the 50's/60's, of whom it was said he would beat the second best player in Britain using a frying pan. Skill matters more than brand.
After "Brazilian Cherry" I have to admit I was hoping to see "Canadian Hands" pop onto the screen.
Narration, ambiance, gratuitous knob polishing, exotic hardwood, a love scene, a death saw, non OSHA compliant turning techniques, this had all my favourite HTR features in one. What a way to start my Saturday!
This was super cool. It was pretty interesting to see this come together again. Great video!

The drive to combine different tools into one seems to be a powerful instinct. This invention proves that it is possible to make a combination plane/chisel, and that such a tool can function. It does not, however, shed any light on why anyone would want to make such a thing, or use one.
Really enjoyed this. Fantastic craftsmanship. I've just discovered a new hobby in wood working after building my first shed from scratch

@pauljs75

Because having to remove and readjust parts on half of it is convenient when switching to the alternate function. Either that or plane away a good bit of skin when trying to get a better grip on the chisel, or stab the chisel into something when trying to plane something. Understandable that this thing never went anywhere or caught on. Ok... It seems more realistic that it just uses the same blade in either spot rather than having two blades for different functions at the same time. But most people find plane adjustments fidgety to get right and don't want to mess with that much outside of needing to sharpen its blade. Not to mention chiseling puts a blade at more risk for getting nicked, which is the last thing you want on a plane's blade. So it's still not going to be popular for that reason.
Looks cool and it's beautiful but borderline useless. The kind of tool you use when there's no choice. Beautiful work you did anyway
