I think we can only trust him on books he hated, because on those I agreed. Books jack adores are books I rate 3-4 stars, but those he says are good but doesn't obsess with are those I absolutely adore! Like, Circe is my favorite book of all time, while Song of Achilles was only 3.5 stars to me

I'm a mythology nut and I bought Circe for my girlfriend. She had heard negative things about it, but I'm glad I proved her wrong, and so was she. She later agreed to read Song of Achilles, and it blew her away. I'll tell ya, these myths are fluid in the way they are told, and it is beautiful.

No booktuber ever has ever so consistently gave me book recs, I know that as long as Jack uploads videos, I'll have books I want to read.

Just finished Circe and I felt like the book kept getting more interesting the further in I was. The first 90 pages were kind of eh and then it just kept getting more interesting with Circe's development to the point that I was sad it ended. Still a 4/5 stars read. Absolutely recommend!

@@quratulaiiin i haven’t read SoA yet but I did read Circe, and I devoured it. I loved the prose and the different characters that visit Circe’s island. I especially loved following her own growth and was very moved by the ending. All I know about SoA is that it’s critically considered BETTER than Circe, which I think is saying a lot. More devastating too, I believe.

@@quratulaiiin her writing style is beautiful, and you will develop such a strong attachment to the characters. It's tragic for obvious reasons if you know the story behind it but also very bittersweet. Highly recommend trying it for yourself!

Not to be dramatic but Jack is *the best* booktuber out there, I singularly have him to thank for the reawakening of my interest in reading! Went from barley picking up a book in three years to working my way thru one-three titles per month and it’s been great!

Madeline millers style of writing is such a gem, i loved the song of achilles not only because of the story, but because the writing was so so beautiful! and i’m not even native english so i thought i’d have problems understanding the more lyrical style but it was so easy to dive into the story and forget i was reading

This is such a helpful video and a series if Jack decides to make one. It's tough to comb through the suggestions on IG and know which books are truly worth it.

Jack, I still can't get over the fact that you read a lot of Japanese literature and haven't read Akutagawa yet. His best works are mostly short stories so you might not like them but Kappa is his only novel and it's GOOD. (other fav. short stories are Rashomon, In a groove, Hell Screen, Spinning Gears, The Life of a Stupid Man, A Note to a Certain Old Friend)

​@@jack_edwards omg thanks, now I can sleep lol btw Kappa is a good story, it's dystopic in a 1984 way (but I don't want to say anything more because there is only one Orwell) so if you have the chance it's worth giving it a try!

I just read Shuggie Bain and honestly… it’s definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read. An incredibly well-written character study that feels more real than any other fiction book I’ve read. In my opinion, a modern classic.

I read Carrie Soto right when it came out and I enjoyed reading it but also when you said the title I thought "wait did I read that?" and I think that's my review of it

I did my capstone project on Circe by Madeline Miller, so I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed it, too! Song of Achilles was amazing, as well. I feel like Madeline Miller just really knows how to end a book in a way that is bittersweet, but sooooo satisfying. She's also great at putting a unique spin on a well-known tale.

inverting the roles! let me recommend you a book, since you liked the idea of tokyo ueno station (but not the execution), i think you would probably enjoy The Posthumous Memoirs Of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis. cant really suggest a translated version since i’ve read it only in portuguese, but i think you can easily find it if you search for it. machado is an amazing writer, his books are well known and well loved classics here in brazil 💚

Jack I am begging you to read Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart, it's a beautiful queer love story set in 90s Glascow. Similar themes to Shuggie Bain, similarly raw and dark, but there is an undeniable glimmer of hope which I find hard to describe.

So I'm a big fan of Bojack Horseman and Rafael Bob-Waksberg's sense of humour, but still had a similar experience with the book, though I think more of it landed for me probably. I agree that the first story with the wedding is one of the strongest, and a lot were very basic or just average, but there were a few other standouts for me that had me laughing quite a lot, like the one with the young woman on vacation with her family dealing with the strained relationship with her estranged brother, I really related to a lot of that and thought the perspective flip at the start of it was really cleverly executed. It likely comes down to whether or not your sense of humor jives with it or not.

I have an important question! I used to read A LOT and now despite being a literature major I seem to have lost my love for it/my ability to focus. I am looking to somewhat "game-ify" reading in order to get back into doing it for pleasure and am wondering if you have any spreadsheet/reading log recommendations where I can review my data and stats as I go. I would love to read the reading log from your company but I am very poor and also am hoping to find something a little more like a spreadsheet which will calculate my stats for me at the end of a week/month/year. A video about your recommendations or things you or people you know use or maybe a video experimenting with different options would be both, at least in my opinion, very interesting, and very much appreciated!

Jack!! You need to read Stuart Douglas' second book, 'Young Mungo'! It's got very similar themes but in my opinion has a far more hopeful tone and I really think you would love it!

I like this video a lot, but if I might make a recommendation, maybe you could do a part two to smash or pass except you judge the books by their covers. (A bit more true to what the game smash or pass is, but then you could read all the books you ‘smash or pass’ on and then review them afterwards.)
