Romance is tricky. I also tend to like "Romance as a sub-plot" within some other genre (fantasy, historical fiction, etc.) more - I think I get bored too easily with romance drama and start wishing they'd fight some dragons or something. "Maybe this is just to straight for me" also hit home, because for the longest time I thought I just didn't even like romance sub-plots that much. Actually, I do: It's just that about 50% of M-F ones are boring/under-developed ("What do you mean 'why do they like each other'? They're two good looking people of opposite genders!") and 25% feel like they should be horror movie plots ("So the main dude kidnaps the girl and then..."). And it isn't that M-M or F-F plotlines automatically fix this, but at least until, like, the 2020s, it seems as if writers who were willing to go there were also willing to put in the time to make you believe the chemistry AND to treat both characters as equals. I've seen more bad ones recently, though, so...equality?

  • @abbie7099

Same i think plot helps develop chemistry. Imo i prefer to read romance subplot better because otherwise the story is boring and the main characters have no chemistry, character development or personality

Same thing for me. I tried a lot of romance novels but most of them wouldn’t work for me. But let me tell you I’m a romance addict. Then I read som fictional books where there was a storyline, an actual plot going on in which characters would develop feelings and I liked it much more better. I just dont like romance when it’s forced

  • @scarlyt1017

Thisss exactly.. im so tired of the same usual romances, it'd be better if they had some thrilling chaotic stuff going on like war or something lol. And most enemies to lovers ( not office ones cause most of them is just rivalry; so fantasy ig ) kind of fit into my criteria. I'd especially like strong female leads and doesn't lack comparing to the male leads. Damsel in distress tropes are starting to get boring . And instead of falling in love at first sight or randomly without any reason is stupid; they should go through things together, encounter obstacles and see the good in each other? Maybe I'm setting too high standards but yeah. These violent delights, folk of the air trilogy, the unhoneymooners were some of the few books i felt more equality between the characters.

  • @Hyperversum3

    @Hyperversum3

Here's the thing, the issue is that romance is a very real thing, and one people have different feelings about. If I read a bad scifi/space opera who cares, maybe it's fun anyway or at least I have a good negative example to use compared to positive ones. The same goes for horror, fantasy, whatever. Bad dramatic novels, albeit touching on real-life topics as well, can be hilarious simply because of how bad an author may use some elements or hype their own story up that just doesn't suit the level of writing. But romance is a much more normal and "real life experience", and so it's being bad is just... boring to me? It's like with slice of life manga, the good ones are heart-warming, fun and so on. The bad ones are just boring. I don't find anything to be enjoyed in romance for romance's sake. Romance is cool and engaging when the characters and the story being told make the reader feel something, it's inherently a genre based on relating to it. Which is also why I just dislike all this "smut" in general. It has a place in romance? Yeah I guess, but that's not exactly something everyone relate to in the same way. You can clearly tell, that an overwhelming majority of "bad romance" was just erotica that didn't have the guts to be straight up erotica/porn and dressed itself in romance trappings. If all you have is 2 hot people fucking, that's porn.

I love romance stories, but yeah, I've noticed I tend to enjoy romances more when it's a subplot rather than the main plot. this isn't always the case, but more often than not it's more enjoyable because I like to feel like the characters have a life outside of each other. that they have their own stories and ambitions that we get to follow. makes it more sweet and realistic to me.

As a former STEM graduate student, the whole premise of The Love Hypothesis made me so angry. Professors should not under any circumstance be dating graduate students due to the imbalance of power there. There are many reported and unreported instances of sexual assault and other abuses of power by PIs (principal investigators aka professors who head research groups). The author of the book is also a professor and they should absolutely know better than to write a book like this. It's a shame because I don't see myself reflected in a lot of these kinds of books as a woman in STEM, so it was exciting to see a protagonist with that profession. The author could have explored all the microaggressions and crippling imposter syndrome endemic to so many femme graduate students, but no.

I recently went through a romance book phase and read 3 or 4 in a row and omg can we get diversity in body types! I noticed it so much reading them back to back. Every single leading man was described with a hard body, six pack abs, muscles, etc🙄 like every single time the woman touches or looks at him its repeated, how hard his body is, she could see his six pack abs when he reached for something, she could feel the definition in his abs through his shirt....ugh! i mean, i get it many people find that attractive but i'd love to see a romance book step out of that box. I personally dont need a man to have that body type to find them attractive and I know im not the only one lol. And I can't stand when the characters refer to each other as babe or baby....actually I cant stand that in real life either, I cringe every time😂 but i thoroughly enjoyed seeing your hilarious reactions to these books.

Your take on fan fiction is spot on!! It's one of the reasons i lean towards fanfics when I'm in a reading slump because i can enjoy a story without having to get to know new characters and worlds. I can just jump into the fanfic with an expectation of how each character will be / act and it's nice and easy on the brain. When you said the characters turn into shells of themselves when fanfics are reworked to be published is so true! Hopefully people who are considering publishing their reworked fanfics in the future will add in some extra details to really flesh out their characters and not leave them as one dimensional.

When you got to People we meet on Vacation, after having disliked 2 other books, I got so nervous because I gave my mom that book for Christmas. When you said you liked it, it was well written, the characters were likable and there was no smut, I literally paused to let out a huge sigh of relief! (I kinda knew it wasn't that smutty, but had based myself on popular opinion). Not against smut at all, just don't want it in a book I give to my mom, you know?

FInally, someone in the right mind, giving opinions on The Spanish Love Deception. I read it a month ago, and after 50 pages I just lost interest, and I literally forced myself to finish, hoping that it would get better but it got worse instead. The characters have no chemistry at all, and to call this enemies to lovers would be a crime. What enemies to lovers are you talking about, when Aaron liked Catalina from the beginning? Also the female character is so dumb throughout the book, I mean the whole book just contains her inner monologues and her starring at Aaron's body and saying some cringy lines in Spanish. After like 150 pages I skipped most of the inner monologue and just read the dialogues and it saved my time. This would be the most cringiest romance book I have ever read, and it's so over hyped all over the book community.

My romance recommendation: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang My credentials (lol): I completely relate to everything you said about yourself. I'm a romantic who reads a lot of fanfiction and enjoys some smut, but I've found the romance genre as a whole very difficult to get into because so many of the plots and characters just... do not work for me. For the reasons you described. My reasoning: I think you'll like The Kiss Quotient because it's fairly unique in that it focus on a woman with autism as the female lead. (And the male lead is a biracial Vietnamese and Swedish man! Also a sex worker! The book was conceived as a gender reversed Pretty Woman.) The book mentions once, maybe twice, that he's bigger than her, but never makes a big thing of it. Their dynamic is full of healthy communication, trust, consent, respect, support, and affection. All the good stuff!

Such an interesting video. And I relate so much to appreciating friends to lovers trope more with getting older. Enemies to lovers seemed so thrilling, exciting, and full of intensity and passion in the past but it's usually also full of instability, hurting each other, and basing relationships on chemistry rather than real connection, shared values, etc. Whereas friends to lovers seemed less intriguing to me but now I enjoy those relationships when characters can rely on each other when they have been supporting each other throughout different moments of their lives, and just have mutual respect and understanding. It's just so much more real and wholesome

I could just chill and hang out with Olive and her friends who I overall found more interesting. I also have never seen any Star Wars except the first three so that made me super unaware of the fact it was a fanfiction and I had no idea what the ship it was based off of was. I think that helped me because I was entirely learning new characters.

Thanks to you for saving me the time and money for Love hypothesis. You did manage to get your point through - as someone who has been reading fanfics for more than 10 years, it makes sense that a book adaptation wouldn’t be good because the characters are bland. Since they are based on actual characters, the fanfic writer doesn’t feel the need to go more deeply on their personality, but it doesn’t transfer well as books.

I love how a part of this is just Hannah straight-up exposing her fanfiction preferences. Also, even though I saw people say something similar in the comments, I wanted to emphasize: fanfiction can be shitty. But it can also be really goddamn good. I've read some fics that impacted me more than most books I've consumed and some of the best smut I've read has also come from there, and I love that you specifically said that you are not looking down on the book because it is fanfic, but simply because it is bad.

I have followed your channel for years and the biggest reason why would be that you and I have such similar tastes in books and just fiction in general. I've read some of the books in this video, and I gotta say I'm looking forward to your comments on them, especially the negative ones 😂 I probably thought the same thing while I was reading them. P.S. manga shelf spotted and looking so good ✨

I feel the same. So many of my favorite books of all time I've read because of her and her recommendations and she's always so spot on when describing a book and just other fiction in general (also watched fmab because of her and i have absolutely no regrets)

the thing that i like about romance books is that it is really predictable, so i read them when i need something lighthearted to read in between really heavy stuff - with these books, you know where things are going so you read them to pass time, not to be invested

I really appreciate how honest you are in your reactions to these books, and in general really. There are so many people hyping up the same books over and over again that it’s a little hard to not feel like the community is forcing itself into repetition. Love the honestly! Random addition, but what case is that on your ipad? it’s such a clean, nice color

I just found your channel and I am really loving it! It feels more honest than other book channels. I like that you aren't afraid to talk about things you didn't like, even if it's a very popular book!

Having accidentally gifted a co-worker book p*rn as a leaving gift (and her sending me photos of the pages - we're very good friends outside of work) I know, that well written smut can be done. I completely get you about these books smut scenes just not being good and it's not you being uptight. I felt the same reading all of Bridgerton, I enjoyed the series, but every single smut scene was the same. All of the men cupped the boop and squeezed the booty. Like, all of them. It was awful, and not because I was scandalised!
