Most fantasy romance is really more romance than fantasy. It follows the tropes of romance, but in a fantasy setting. And I think that explains the divided reactions to a lot of it. Folks who are primarily fantasy readers get frustrated with a book that isn't what they were hoping for. Whereas readers who come from other genres, who don't typically read fantasy, enjoy it as a flavor in their romance story. Having the wrong expectations can really destroy an experience. Like expecting chicken soup and getting borscht. I think there's also something about these books that appeals to people who read a lot of YA.

Dwayne and Xander 😂😂 I just finished this, too, and fully expected to hate it, but it got me!

I love that your reaction to fourth wing was mine 😭 like I went in with such low expectations and I agree that I think it helped because it then surprised me with how much fun it was.

Watching Ellias rave about Fourth Wing, me cheering him on like I’m not a 46 yr old southern GiGi. Don’t care. This book was fun and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

There is a release party at Barnes and Noble in Burbank for Iron Flame on 11/6! My sister and I will both be there. After I read the book, I forced my fantasy hating sister to read it and she loved it just as much as I did. We are both super excited to read the new one.

Haha loved your reaction on Fourth Wing. Happy to not be the only one who tested the hype just recently. :) I thought it was good not 5 * but I liked it a lot. And agree with pretty much anything you said (.... like...Violence? Really?*hardeyeroll"). but seriously: MORE DRAGONS! :D also liked, that Violet was 20 something instead of like 16/17 years old which, ok isn't much older but for me it made a big difference. Though like you said it does hit a lot of (YA categorized but debatable if adult), YA fantasy romance tropes. What would you think would be your power/dragon like OR what would you like as a power?

Ok this has solidified that we have the same taste a lot. I felt the exact same about a taste of gold and iron. I wanted to love it because it seemed so good but it was so slow and the relationship was cute but nothing special.

I read fourth wing and I must say, it's was good. Although I should mention that I loved the dragons way more and their relationship with the riders and the BANTER.... I will read the whole series just for the dragons. And do you think that violet's power is what it is because xander's is shadow wielding? Maybe due to the bonding or something, they have opposite powers that balances each other's...idk? And maybe xander has more than one power seeing that violet has.... idk anything. The ending really got me but i guessed violet's power. To say that i thought this book would not be for me is hilarious at this point because i just can't stop thinking about it.

The whole Timeline thing in Fourth Wing made me DNF it. Like, they are sometimes wearing robes/tunic things but have WATCHES?! What?! I don't get the time period of this book or what it's supposed to be. The characters sepak like GenZs...isn't it supposed to be set in the old days?? Its not even listed as "contemporary fantasy" so what's going on?? Someone please explain to me. - A girl that loves HISTORICAL romance.
