I Quit Sugar For An Entire Year - How My Life Changed

January first of 2020 I decided to see what would happen if I quit added sugar, after having binged on junk food for two weeks. In this video, I share my experience along with some scientific data and the benefits/withdrawal effects of quitting sugar.
After finishing the challenge I've decided to continue this lifestyle for the most part, restrict most added sugars in the future. Let me know what you guys think about this challenge or any of your similar experiences in the comments below.

Sorry. Continuing... So I realized excess of sugar affects ALL organs from brain, heart, liver, eyes to skin. We get sugar from sugar cane, beetroot, etc. Starch is a kind of sugar from rice, potatoes, pasta, roti, flour etc. Too much carbs mean excess sugar. Fructose is sugar from fruits. So too ripe fruits not good. Next juice in canned fruit or fruit juice on bricks is bad for health. So sugar , once taken, created an addiction and causes ur brain to want more. But excess makes us feel tired, irritating, etc Thx

If you eat a sweet treat again, you will notice it is sickly sweet and you won’t sleep well that night. Sugar is a horrible drug and the food industry wants everyone addicted to it.

One benefit I noticed from quitting sugar that I did not expect was: I felt this sense of freedom. I started feeling more free from myself rather than being constantly in need of something, that something being sugar. I started feeling like I could do anything, go anywhere, rather than being a slave to my cravings. This freedom, and what I would say is true freedom, is something that everyone should experience, cause it is an incredible thing that makes life feel like you're living it.

This becoming a real discussion is very encouraging . I quit sugar 11 years ago. No one was talking about it then, and I lived in a town famous for making chocolate, and was married to someone who worked for the company. Candy was a daily staple in our house. So it took a fair amount of resolve. But I had developed several health conditions related to weight and stress and I was scared. Within a year of quitting I was healthy, fit and more serene. I'm not even going to say how much weight naturally came off because that wasn't the original goal. I'm now a retired person and I look and think much younger than most of my peers. For anyone who's tried and failed, don't give up. If I can do it anyone can! PS it's true that sweet becomes almost sickening. I eat fruit instead and it's just right

@@Danjacytes , I believe you should not deprive yourself of the simple pleasures of life. The key is moderation, healthy eating and exercise. I have reduced the intake of sugars and carbs like baked goods. I rarely drink any fizzy drinks or fruit juices or eat boxed cereals. Instead I add a slice lemon to my plain or carbonated spring water. For breakfast I eat poached eggs, avocados, sweet potatoes with grilled tomatoes and some cheese. Other times I will cook organic oatmeal cereal and add berries and nuts and fat reduced milk. On rare days occasions I will eat fried eggs with toast or make pancakes. For lunch I eat grilled chicken with stir fried vegetables or grilled fish with either steamed or sautéed vegetables. I eat lots of different fresh fruits and vegetables. For snacks I eat mixed nuts or bite of chocolate or rarely serving of ice cream or a cookie. I avoid fried and salty snacks like chips. I don’t go to the gym or run. I just do a brisk walk daily of 5-10km depending on the weather. I try to walk everywhere rather than drive. With this simple routine of eating well, moderate exercise and enjoying simple pleasures of life has helped me maintain my bmi, blood sugars, cholesterol and blood pressure.

And cravings were the least of my problems! 😅 Now I'm in month 3, and things have started to feel easier. I'm finally sleeping like a baby, and my skin is so smooth and soft with no breakouts! Luteal phase is the worst to build new habits and particularly those that involve not eating the delicious sugar you crave so much before your period (been tracking my cycles for the last 9 years) Also, not eating sugar really helps diminishing cramps and swelling during your period. :)

But then an unrelated serious health matter came up, which caused me to visit an acupuncturist. He had me totally overhaul my eating habits, which included not eating any added sugar. My appearance really improved. My skin looked better and I dropped quite a bit of weight. Because I saw such dramatic benefits, I have stayed with it.

it's no mistake that the foods from the States are sweeter. I believe part of it is because a lot of marketing research goes into taste testing prepared foods and results indicate prepared food products have a better chance of selling if they are sweet. There was an excellent BBC documentary entitled something like the Truth About Sugar that touched on this. So yes, Sam Day, it does seem that it's even harder now to avoid sugar if one eats processed food. I never used to cook, but now I make the effort. Even cooking simply has been a game changer for me.

EKN, I agree. We have noticed, when you change your eating/cooking habits new realisations occur. We have developed new cooking skills and favourite recipes (esp when we are feeling lazy or arrive at dinner time late, and have alternatives to take away food). Realisations like that you can eat zucchini raw, you don’t need to cook it until it waves a white flag. We eat a lot more raw foods, like salads as a main (hearty or decadent salads) as a main, like Thai beef salad, or salads with nuts, seeds, meats or cheeses added. Raw veg is unprocessed goodness, and we feel better after meals for it. If you’re still hungry, eat some fruit!

I've been sugar free for years now. After you get used to it, you get to notice how things like bread & pasta start affecting you just like sugar did. So, if you really want to quit sugar (as your body sees it) you also need to quit products made with ultra-refined flour and soy, which turn into glucose within minutes in your stomach (just like sugar). These include pasta, bread, savory biscuits and cakes etc.

I had to speak up about offering more protein and veg, because that's what my body is used to. I can eat like them ever once in awhile, but everyday all day I can feel the difference. Or, "This is a special occasion. You should join in." etc. I think they are threatened by my determination ( which they lack) as if my behavior is a form of reproach or criticism of their weakness, In fact, though, I've come to understand that my will power is quietly admired and has inspired others to join me. Also I was always thinking that thicker skin was symbolic to having juicy youthful skin s dry thin skin. But everything else you talked about are all the things I really want to enjoy for the rest of my life. I really just think something is secretly scary about how sugar is everything. I have been off processed/added sugar food for about a month. Been off caffeine, Tea/coffee/coke etc for years now. I needed motivation for my early morning walk so had a large mug of coffee, what a high I got, still get an obvious hit every morning for the last week and that is just one mug each morning, powerful stuff.

I did this for 2 years without even like trying. I was in a phase where I'd rather eat watermelon than candy. Everybody in my life noticed the difference and so did I soon enough

I went without sugar in my life a long time ago after having my first child. My life was so phenomenal. I went back to it after my second child and gave in to the social norm. I have been trying to be alcohol, sugar and caffeine free for the last 3 years. I am getting there and back on track. I appreciate you helping me on this journey! I need this reminder while my brain is not clear yet.

Quit eating sugar and artificial sugar 2 years ago. It's so freeing to be rid of the addiction. Thank you for promoting a healthier lifestyle, and exposing the fake food industry.

I am in awe of your willpower! I've tried to quit sugar so many times now but I always cave at one point. You have inspired me to try again though and hopefully succeed this time!
