I Quit My Job To Travel for a Year. ✈️ Here's What That Did For Me | Black Women Abroad

I Quit My Job To Travel for a Year. ✈️ Here's What That Did For Me | Black Women Abroad | In 2015, I quit my job to travel for a year on savings. I visited 12 countries in 12 months. And I never went back to "normal" life in the United States. Let's talk about that transformation from worker to nomad. And why I think ALL Black women (most especially African American women) should quit their jobs and take a career break. 📌 RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO:

@ I am Jayfill Yes, it was a blessing that you were able to meet wonderful people during your sabbatical. I am in the planning stage of a two month stay in Mexico. I am an active retired senior citizen (female) and can be flexible with my travel. After my 'dental tourism' is complete, I have not settled on what part of the country I should visit. Do you mind stating in what city/town you met those friendly people? What other areas would you recommend to a lone traveler? Thank You and Blessings.

I took a three year sabbatical to care for my Mom. She passed three months ago and I am so GRATEFUL for that uninterrupted time with her. I’m so GRATEFUL for the mental break. My only concern was caring for my Mom. I lost 50 lbs. I detoxed my brain. I did a total mental cleanse. I truly enjoyed my time away from the demands of life. I’ve been back in the workforce six months now, refocused and re-centered.

I thought maybe I was too old but baby I am having a good time. I made friends, have been dating and eating amazing food. I’ve struggled with purpose for a long time, but I’ve also kinda felt like what you’re saying, too. Instead of seeking to find your purpose, ask yourself what are your dreams. I know I don’t want to commute and go into an office for the rest of my working life. I want to be able to work from anywhere, or better yet, be able to meet my financial goals through entrepreneurship.

I’m retired early and loving it. I have a pension so I can pay my bills. I downsized on one hand but I’m inheriting a house on the other because my mother recently passed. Never wanted a house nor anything that I felt held me down. I’ve since worked that out so I’m not tied down to that. My job held me down and that’s gone. People are constantly trying to find me other jobs or chores to do which I resist. 😄 Because they want to define me by work. It’s as if I’m not supposed to be retired at so young an age. I used to travel the world and since CoVid started hiking. I now travel to different states to do so. I will restart my international travel to hike/walk around the world. So I do stuff but; outside of the normal house chores I live for myself and not for things. Happy!

Thank you so much for this, Stephanie. I have spent my entire life neay working myself to death. Literally. Even after I was diagnosed with not one, but TWO autoimmune diseases and awarded disability benefits I've still worked within the acceptable parameters of employment. I have always felt like my worth was directly tied to my productivity. And now I'm unlearning this. As a Black woman, it's a hard behavior to unlearn, but I'm doing it! I plan to start housesitting later this year, thanks to you! Much love to you. THANK YOU. ❤

This month that I've had off has been such an eye opener and has made me realize a lot regarding my personal and work life. Being overworked isn't it! I deserve to live the life of my dreams. I want to add how people disregard you in America after you are about the age of 37 and up especially after 40. I've noticed after this age people make other people feel like they just aren't important. If a man or a woman is about to wed in their 40's, 50's etc. No one cares. Not even some of that person's family members. When you wed at a younger age you get questions of enthusiasm, sheer delight such as, what are your colors going to be, have you chosen your invitations yet, venue, dress etc. Going back to school if you are 40 and over no one cares about you getting yet another college degree or job promotion. I have a sister who is in her sixties. I hear people say Hi________. (her name here. How is ______(her daughter's name here) doing. They don't even ask her how she's doing anymore.

Replay...to watch and love as usual! I'm super blessed that I got opp to buy all pass Expo summit 2022...my first ever! Though I discovered Stephanie about 2 yrs ago (while I was housesitting locally). Than I saw her interview of Queen, and I bought multiple copies of Queen's book (for myself, and gifts for others); I got excited about Lake Chapala Mex, and beginning my own plans for my eventual expat journey. Than I ran into an unexpected wall. I allowed myself to relapse and put the "S on my chest", one last time! So, I put my plans on hold (again), and am now 17 months into a remarriage, after being single since divorcing in 2013. I fell back into being a "super (introverted) black woman" once more; to take on a husband who was a lonely widower who's 1st wife of 65 yrs had died about 18 months before he and I met. Whew! It's been a challenge for me, suffice it to say! However, last week, I registered us, and made down payment for my first trip out of the country (except Canada), to Costa Rica 3/20-28, 2023! YAY! THANK YOU Stephanie, Shida, Adalia, and ALL the Super Exodus Summit ladies! 🙂

To your point about financial freedom - in truth, most of the folks who are claiming F.I.R.E. status are still working. They are creating content, doing coaching and courses, etc. They are still earning an income and "working" but doing the work they want, have relaxed schedules, and are entrepreneurs. They aren't necessarily chillin' on a beach. I'd love for you to speak more about this.

Thanks for doing this, Stephanie. I've sent you the e-mail with my channel info - the channel outlines the dos and don'ts in Rwanda by documenting my experience, including my critter phobia. Lol. And regarding sabbaticals - how was living on a budget without that regular income for you? Other than critters, that has been my biggest challenge.

This is my reply to your comment about waiting for Weight loss, to travel. You don't know how heavyset this woman is. And there are a lot of people who face discrimination when they are severely overweight. So as much as I love you, Stephanie, think before you reply to certain comments. As a person who is over 320 pounds, life is a lot different from most people when it comes to traveling! Not only is discrimination high against heavyset people, your energy level is at an all time low when you're overweight. So getting up and moving around will never be easy for someone who is obese. Being diabetic and needing certain medication's are also not easy for people to obtain who are traveling and overweight. You are so right about your opinions on Americans! Lol I don't understand why everybody wants to know what do I do for a living as soon as they meet me. Maybe because I dress well and I tend to have expensive accessories. But mostly, I'm an African-American woman, and they want to know how much respect to give me during this brief conversation they have with me. So incredibly true that they treat you better overseas. I just can't wait to leave the USA.

@kaegirenee6463, thank you for saying that. A good girl friend of mine is very obese. We live in different states. We used to travel together at least 1st a year. Once we hit late 30's, everything changed with her body. Pain became a serious issue for her. Knees hurt, back hurt, and body cramps are a result of too much walking for her. But walking is a large part of visiting different places though. Airplane seats, which are too SMALL for even people who are height & weight proportioned, are extremely uncomfortable for many obese people to get in/out of and move in the space; especially in/out of the tiny bathrooms.

I'm on sabbatical now but here in the US. I lived abroad for 12 years - that was a life/identity/perspective shift! Will I return abroad? Likely. But, the sabbatical can happen here in the US if folks need to be here family, etc.) or are still waiting to get those passport stamps.

I don't have advice. But I am in the exact same position--almost two years out of work, preparing to go back, and DREADING it. I've had several breakdowns, but finally found peace in deciding to use it as a launching pad for my permanent exit. I'll work fulltime for a year, continue working toward my digital nomad career change, and save as much money as possible. Then come January 2024, I'm leaving nursing and the US for good.

Its easier to get along with loners on vacation than friends who are extroverts coming along. Loners aren't seeking attention we are just there for the adventures and making new friends. Extroverts want everyone to do what they want and argue to get their way. Love traveling alone and meeting other people who are doing the same.

Hi Stephanie I really enjoy how you are documenting your journey. I want to travel but I am an introvert and have a hard time being around people but at the same time don't want to travel alone, that's my delimma. I also am a picky eater so I think I would starve going out of the country LOL! What do you do for health insurance? With all that is going on that's stopping me from leaving my job and doing something I want to do.
