During the month of March, I trend-jacked Instagram Reels and posted a trendy Reel every day for 31 days. To say that it was an experience, especially as an Artist, is an understatement, and a lot of thought was put into this experiment. In this video, I talk about the hypothesis, the methodology, the results, one of my viral Instagram Reels, and then how you can achieve the same results too.

If you don't mind, I'd love to see a video on "how you put together" some of your popular reels... Thanks for the useful data points!
LMAO FACTS! You’re not a street photographer if you’re asking a random person to take their photograph. You are now shooting a portrait 😭

Someone asked me the other day, "do you take street photos?", I said yes, and they said "No, more like this! You know, like on the TikToks", and proceeded to show me a series of portraits taken on the street. I couldn't tell you how hard I facepalmed 😂

@@patkay NOOO, bruh the inner cringe you must’ve had 😭😭😭 I’m sorry you had to sit through that dude LOL
I'm so thankful that I found this video. Your perspective is very similar to thoughts that I've been having as a struggle to balance my vision as a creator with my hopes to grow my business. Your outlook is refreshing. Thank you.
Love your straightforward approach to addressing some of the current trends.. Despite you not being clearly on board with it, I deeply respect you for staying objective and continue to provide us educational information regarding your experience. No matter the level of skill/number of followers, the truth (as you have shared) being that hard work and consistency is still the key ingredient and I felt like that is the most crucial and perhaps most comforting to know in this madness of a world today that everything is driven by clicks. While algorithm seems to be driven by some elements of luck, there is the saying that luck favours the prepared. All the best with your initiatives, Pat!
Your honesty and genuine nature of your videos and your advise is so good. Thank you. I am really early in my creative content journey, really early, but you give me the confidence to try this lifestyle. I have hated mainstream so much (and to be fair it hates me too). Your advice is solid. Thanks so much.
Every one of your videos leaves me speechless. It is so full of insight and wisdom and honesty… I appreciate you and all your content 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Man I love the way you pointed out the “cringe “ of social media. True artist hate being unoriginal, which goes against social media.

So true. Wow..
I was actually wondering about your Before/after animation, then when I saw you built it from hand in... Awesome. Well done man, that's the type of little detail stuff that makes your work unique. Really appreciate all the insight into your own social media experiments. Interesting stuff for sure.

Any chance I can get to learn something new, *especially* if it's a creative skill, I'm in! After Effects is actually so damn powerful and such a great skill to learn!
Loved getting an insight into your experience with reels. I've been considering trying something similar to grow my page. This is the first video I've seen but I'm definitely going to stick around, keep up the great work!.
I’d love to see this over the course of 3 months. Last year I was really into reels (and IG was pushing them a lot more so it’s def a slower growth now but still your best shot overthere) and got to grow my illustration account from 10k to 70k. But most of those 60ks can be tracked down to about 4-5 videos that reaaaally popped off. What you said in the beginning is true: high frequency, consistency and quality. Frequency and consistency because it’s a numbers game what the algo will pick up or not, and quality bc that dramatically increases your odds of that happening (tho as many can attest, not a requirement - hence the viral low effort content we see time to time)

Honestly, while I'd love to keep it up every day for 3 months, other parts of my life would suffer as a result - something I'm not willing to do. I will, however, continue to post them at least 3-5 times a week, so hopefully that's enough to see the growth. Congrats on your 60k by the way! That's a fantastic result and props to you for figuring it out.
LOL “busting through the cringe” is the most accurate sentence I’ve heard regarding short form content 😂
@patkay

it was hard 😂
Man this was really great to watch. Recently I've been feeling the pressure to make shorts, but have been dreading starting down that path, mainly due to the "cringe factor" you mentioned. Of the 3 types of videos you chose, I think I could probably do one of them. But seeing the performance numbers from the YT shorts you posted, maybe it won't even be worth my time; given that even though you are so good at making these short vertical videos, it seems like the demand for that on the YT side for this type of content is so damn low 😅
can't tell ya how long I've been waiting to hear your findings. really insightful vid here. looking forward to seeing how you curate your work going forward.

Lol, me too 😂
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’m a freelance graphic designer in Japan and recently started to social media for business, but I’ve been struggling with my true feelings because I don’t like mainstream posts and cringy trends. But you helped me articulate those confusing feelings of mine and loosened up my rigid thoughts. Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts - I can relate to your points. I love your videos and mindset
You are talented at delivering educational content in this format.
I loveeee it!! Thanks for sharing this!! I feel the same way, but I feel it’s good to play the game!! Is a way to learn and grow!! ❤

Te conheci hoje e notei que já havia te visto no instagram antes! Seu olhar artístico é muito legal de acompanhar, obrigado pelos vídeos!
Thanks for sharing! Would be very interested in a how to of the after effects color pallet that you created!
great video! was looking forward to something about socials and growth from you, especially in 2023. very nice words about integrity, thanks for inspiring every week! 🙏

thanks pat for sharing your approach with the new short format era we're living in. We probably need to adapt or die but hopefully in a creative way haha

It's not ideal, but it is what it is. I'm right there with ya.
This is an important video, thank you for making it, Pat.
Great video! A lot to unpack here. I really struggle with the “cringe” factor. I dont enjoy reels, and i dont watch them so i always stayed away from making “trendy” content cause it feels like selling your soul to the algorithm…but on the flip side ive been really struggling to gain traction and maintain a consistent reach recently. You make a lot of really good points in this video. Def going to try and make “trendy” content with my own work and see how it does
This is a really great breakdown but I love the long, exasperated sighs you give everytiume you even think about the trend content you were creating, hahah!

Haha, it's a trudge for me, but I guess it's only because learning how to embrace the cringe is also difficult. I'll get better 🫡
Very encouraging and great video!
I always feel so conflicted, as I want to grow a account and hopefully turn it into a business… but social media can be so toxic and draining… I’ll maybe try a few reels I guess

It helps if you spend way more time creating and way less time consuming. I currently do this at a 80/20 ratio of creating/consuming, and that's carried me through to where I am today. Hopefully that helps!
What do you use to edit your photos such as color grading, masking etc
Hey Pat ! I am 3 weeks in the same experiment as you did, but only managed to gain 100 followers. For some reason, a lot of my audio used before in the reels became unavailable and my engagement has dropped significantly. Do you have any idea why ? Am I doing something wrong ?
I was wondering what was going on. Those before and after animations were slick
So timely and cathartic ❤

Thank you 😌
That was really interesting to listen to. We create alot of content at work for social media and try to be fast on the trending train complety sacrificing any "real" value that we offer our audience with the content being uploaded. We simply copy and pasta (with a slight twist to it), which always leaves a bad taste, because I still have my camera in my hand and create something, which I love. But that something is empty and adds just more "noise" to these platforms. Well, it's work after all and I still get time to make creative pieces so its fine I guess.

If you can get through the end of your day and feel like you did work or made a difference, then more power to what you're doing! But if not, then you know that something needs to change.
Excellent video!
How do you upload photos from Lightroom classic to Instagram without changing quality at all! I’m on windows, I watermarked and cropped to the proper photo size ratio and now I’m stuck with a photo but I don’t want to email or upload to the internet and loose quality. Should I drop box it? What quick methods could I use to get it to mobile for ig! Thanks always my photographer friends.❤
You Either Die A Hero, Or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain. Jkn. I’ve been having a similar dilemm for a few years now. Or from whenever reels trend started. I don’t post enough and my reels tend to be more complicated so require more time and it’s disheartening so some great tips and lessons here for me.

I did the before and after reels as well and they were actually really fun to make. super easy and a nice break from thinking too much about posts to make

So true.
So is it 1 reel a day and do you post other stuff during that day? Also, I think my channel is too broad, being that I shoot cars, motorcycles, landscapes,animals...etc Thinking to make separate ig accounts for each.
@patkay
Жыл бұрын
It was 1 Reel a day, and then in between if I felt like posting images, I did that whenever was convenient.
How many days in did the viral video hit?
I think the Tokyo shot raise a lot of debate & comments, some prefer the after and some like the before and it triggered the Instagram algorithm for peak exposure.
Could you also release a video here on KZread your process of creating reel for Instagram?
@patkay

Perhaps, but that's very broad, what specifically did you want to know?

I think many here are interested in especially how you did this before after Reel in After Effects :) AE is a very nice program, but as many Adobe Apps very confusing and overwhelming when you start.. So a tutorial would be awesome! :)
It's really hard to get those results when your account is only a 1k followers.
@patkay
Жыл бұрын
It's only hard in the sense that when you have 1K followers, you most likely haven't had enough chances at bat to figure out what content works or not. If anything, it's way more valuable for creators of lower followers to do this so that they can figure out what works faster.
Interesting video. I’ve followed for a few months and didn’t watch for 30 days as I thought you’d lost the usp that made me follow.
@patkay

It's a balance. The USP that you appreciate is just one of the many USP's that everyone creates in their own world for the people they watch. Hopefully I can continue to deliver the things that make you want to watch though!
do that on tiktok and you'll grow 100k+
As a natural artist, never call or see yourself as a " content creator "....its garbage recycling
