    7:20 These were kickstarter exclusive things apparently, the dev wasn't able to hide them on the store page for some reason and didn't want people non-KS to buy them, so raised the price and told people not to pay for it. Guess it's just a bit of incompetency with potential reward for if someone wants it really bad.

    Or its a money laundering scheme, some (now banned) devs used steam dlcs to launder money using the same tactic - very cheap asset-flip game, several dlcs for $100-150 that gave nothing but "a golden skin". Other explanation does not make any sence, you can hide items very easily, and can even add non-store packages and make them key-only, hundreds of devs do that.

    @@hoeglund8995 It was supposed to be a launch title for a console by another Chinese company, but they stopped development on the console in 2019 due to financial issues, which I'm assuming is why work on the game has stalled. They actually still update the game with bugfixes and stuff, the last patch was last week. [Although one of the updates simply reads 'Depressed'] As far as I know the full game actually exists already (ie. levels, assets - its still a bit unpolished obvs), it just isn't in the early access version. Its possible they're looking for a new publisher to take the finished game to or something like that. I think the reason they're adding stuff like altenate game modes now is to support the existing playerbase and, yknow, feed their children.

    About the Strength of the Sword dlc. Originally it was a kick starter game, and some of the backer rewards were exclusive dlc skins. However towards the tail end of development shit started to go south, and the two man dev team ended up splitting up leaving only one guy to try and get the game shipped. Among various difficulties he couldn't figure out how to integrate the backer skins into the game so that only the backers would be able to unlock them. His solution was to make them all DLC packs, and then set the prices on them ludicrously high so that normal players wouldn't buy them, and then just give out free dlc codes to said backers. It's a messy fix, but it was a messy situation over all, and the guy really did his best to try and make sure everyone got what was promised to them. So no, it's not a meme or anything, you're legit supposed to be deterred away from buying them.

    Strength of the Sword Ultimate has *an interesting review that references you, Pineapple* "I helped Kickstart Strength of the Sword Ultimate years back with a LOT of money. It's a solid game and the combat is too deep for me but I absolutely love that. The game has an incredible Multiplayer Suite but there isn't the life in the fanbase for it. The DLC's are likely because the guys who worked on the game didn't know how to hide the special backer content to let people who had the codes access them. If the recent Iron Pineapple video helps bring this game to life, I'll be eternally grateful."

    14:42 : Shattered is a game that started development about 6 or so years ago. The team as I knew them back then was composed of a couple programmers from my IT school (Epitech) and some artists from another school (e-artsup iirc who's part of the same school group, IONIS Education Group... or Was it the Bellecour art school ? can't remember...). I obviously can't talk for the state of the team right now since i kinda lost contact with these guys a few years ago... but the issue they were facing at first was the imbalance between how many programmers they had versus how many artists they had. All of them are talented people (artists and programmers alike), but that imbalance was slowing them a bit in their progress...

    The Strength of the Sword DLC was due to a mistake with Kickstarter rewards, so they had to put them in as “DLC” to try to work things out, or something. Regardless, the project put a huge strain on the two creators as they got hype and bit off more than they can chew and at the end, one had to leave due to personal issues, leaving one to try to support the game themself. Despite initial huge support for the game, the development took too long and just hurt the Devs, then they had no visibility on the Steam shop so I think they’ve had to give up before the stress kills them. My guess at least. Poor dude. Just one of those bad situations that despite the success and the enthusiasm from the developers, things can still go bad.

    So, pretty much just a review of Dauntless then? Where does that hate for Dauntless come from, though? It's a pretty polished, free game in the genre of Monster Hunter. It's not trying to be the next Monster Hunter (I understand that the marketing suggests otherwise) but rather to be an alternative. The devs are incredibly active, so the game gets big content updates quite frequently and smaller patches in-between those. I mean, I might be biased because I'm kinda involved with the game (tho I did like it before that) but I don't think it deserves all the shit it gets from people who expect a perfect AAA experience from a completely free indie game without any kind of pay2win.

    To answer your question about the Strength of the Sword Ultimate DLC. I was a kickstarter backer and I have those skins because the devs sent me the codes to redeem them so I never even realized they were priced in the first place until this video. I'm not exactly sure about the logistics for why they implemented it like that, but it was developed by 2 dudes who know nothing about game publishing, they just wanted to make a cool game. Which they did! And then they split up as a result of the mess this game's development became after the kickstarter because they didn't use the money they raised to hire someone to manage the business end of things. It's kind of a shame because this game was basically done like 4 years ago, it just needed more content and someone who actually understood how to ship a game (it doesn't even have a physical version).

  • @felipealarcon4622

    @@bookofpayne Oh I didn't mean it in the sense that I was expecting it to ever have one. I was moreso referring to how the lack of a physical release should have made the process of launching their game significantly less difficult from a logistics standpoint. Hosting a game digitally has so many avenues at this point, all you'd have to do is ask the platforms and they'd likely be more than happy to steer you in the right direction. GoG, Humble Bundle, itch.io, etc etc etc, there's so many other paths they could've taken to get this game launched, but because asking for help was apparently impossible, they let the situation spin so far out of control without telling anybody what was happening it was already far too late for us to help when everything came crashing down and their partnership dissolved.

    For anyone wondering, the Strength of the sword DLCs are supposed to be kick starter rewards, but steam wouldn't let them be hidden or set to N/A for some reason. I think the company went under before it could get resolved.

    Hey, Strength of the Sword is on here, awesome! I was a backer when that game was on Kickstarter, just wanted to mention that the $200 DLC is there because the devs couldn't find a way to deliver kickstarter-exclusive DLC skins without listing them on the Steam store, so they ended up just putting them up at ridiculous prices so they could deliver the keys to backers. Anyway, keep up the great work on these videos man, they're a lot of fun!

    There had to be a better way. I refuse to believe Steam doesn't have a better way if handling something like that. Steam, why, why yo do this to these poor devs? Why?

  • @DaBoweh

    @DaBoweh

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@zeterzero4356 I mean, can you name a Steam game with de-listed DLC? I sure can't. But think of all the pre-bundle season pass dlc options that have been eclipsed and made obsolete by steam bundles, and yet the original season pass dlcs are still listed for purchase on the store as well. XCOM 2's Reinforcement Pack is a prime example. The XCOM 2 collection bundle currently contains the reinforcement pack, the original season pass for XCOM 2, which itself is made up of three other dlcs, each also sold separately. The season pass has been completed for years, and it only makes sense to remove the reinforcement pack from the store and convert it into a bundle, so that customers don't end up getting confused or buying the same dlc twice. But 2K/Valve don't do that. If a kickstarter game wants to give digital DLC backer rewards, but de-list the items from the store, I don't know of a way to do this directly with valve. It usually involves a 3rd party account and unlocking content outside of the steam platform, which is another logistical nightmare for a small developer in and of itself.
