I painted a Space Marine ONLY with sponges

Ойын-сауық

I paint a warhammer miniature only with sponges to create micro textures on its surface. This video shows the technique in detail and is also a challenges for my miniature hobby skills. I dilute vallejo and citadel acrylic paints with water and inks to sponge onto the miniature. Over many layers, this gives the surface texture and color.
Inspired by videos from ‪@MidwinterMinis‬ and ‪@52Miniatures‬ which use this often in their videos.

Love the challenge here Tobi and well done picking the best Space Marine Legion to do your experiment on! Sticking with the sponge theme it might be interesting to spray the mini gunmetal and then apply the red sponging from there, would be fascinated to see that effect! Love the vid as always

You can skip 3/4 of the extra layers by sponging a basecoat of a rich, saturated, warm *brown*. Covers way better than any red.

Yep, kinda gross that he's just using a girl in his thumbnail that has nothing to do with the video to try and get more views. :(

It looks good but you want very, very thinned down paint and multiole passes with the same colour with very little paint on the sponge to achieve a dramatic gradient. Otherwise its basically brush painting. Its much easier to see on bigger things like vehicle armor panels.

It looks phantasmagorically magnificent. I'd love to see a squad done up this way. Definitely would get my wallet out for that.

I think the sponge is good for specific effects, but sometimes it creates too much texture, and it almost looks like the Space Marine colored his armor with spray paint. I've seen it used well to create chipped paint effects and weathering / dirt though.

Yes, this experiment escalated and showed the extreme. When used for specific applications, a sponge can be fantastic! An entire mini ... not so much 😅
