Having worked at a pizza restaurant, I can confirm that isn't quite what it is like. Maybe if you used a lighter pigment to look more like cornmeal it would fit better. That and the grass tufts, no way would that happen in a kitchen, people would have long since trampled it. Small details, but details matter. It really ruins the immersion.

For a really rusty metal, I use a rust colored base layer, drybrush it with some mettalic color, and then carfully stipple some dark color on it (grey for cast iron look, dark brown for thick rust). Some additional texture paint can also help before.

Alternatively for armor, before you clear coat the mini. Throw sand at it for an extra realistic paint chipping effect. as a bonus, It also gives it that nice dusty effect. Two birds with one stone, or rather a handful of tiny ones.

There are a couple of different kinds of artist's pastels; one of them is oil-based, and these don't do well as ground pigments -- you want to make sure that you have chalk-based pastels for doing pigment applications, but yes, they will work, and are used somewhat extensively in weathering plastic models, particularly military vehicles.

depends on the paint - model colors are usually more matt (especially black, which is not good imho) but overall, they are between satin and matte unless you thin it too much, in which case it can be a little glossy when glazing.
