I Need To Process All Of The Quail In This Hutch

Another processing video. Seems like that is all I have been doing lately. But it is the time of year to stock up the freezer.

Maybe you could put your portable critter Cage in the big side, then go to the small side and scare them right into it?

I've never raised quail, but when I process rabbits I make sure the meat is wet brined before rigor mortis sets in. Once the animal is dead it takes about an hour before rigor mortis will start. Once started, rigor mortis will usually last one or two days. Cells need oxygen to produce ATP. After death occurs, cells are able to temporarily obtain oxygen by breaking down sugar in a process called glycolysis. Once sugar is no longer available for this chemical process, calcium is able to infiltrate the cells, causing rigor mortis to begin. If the meat is brined before rigor mortis sets in, sodium from the salt will bind with calcium to prevent rigor mortis.

Nice channel. Thank you, for making nice videos and sharing. I’m new to quail and just starting. If raising just for meat, how old should quail be to process efficiently.

Are you not crushing the breast meat when you tear upwards which changes the texture of the meat?

Do you ever use the tilted cage so the eggs will roll to the edge for easier collection? How much feed do you go through the life of a clutch of birds?

@@SageandStoneHomestead Yes I do, it is a work that teaches patience though, but I would have a rebellion on the table if the skin was not on the bird. ;-)

Why hunt the birds between the different part of the cage. When you fix it, fix a board so you can isolate the bird in one end of the cage.

Have not seen it being stunned before the snip. We find it easier, faster and humane to just snip. Why hurt the little thing if you’re going to snip it’s head off anyways. Not judging just seems more humane to just do it(snip)
