“I make $450,000 on YouTube. My husband is ashamed he can’t match my success”

Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich talks to Darby and Kirsty, 27 and 25, who are professional KZreadrs. While Kirsty’s art tutorial channel explodes in profitability, Darby’s efforts lag behind in viewership and earnings, creating a stark contrast in their money dynamic. He feels he doesn’t deserve comfort. She waits for her success to vanish.

After 45 years of marriage and paying for all the bills … I didn’t realize how much love, respect, and family love my husband brought to the table until he suddenly passed. I knew he brought more to the marriage than me struggling to support us but I wish I thanked him more for all the joy he brought us. We all miss him so much.

My mom went through something similar and it does not necessarily have anything to do with gender roles. It's the question of self worth. Sure, this is an issue of how society makes us feel about working, raising kids, running a business, etc. However, I truly believe this goes well beyond gender norms. As kids, we get allowance for helping with the chores or doing well in school. However, that quickly changes once we become adults. We realize that there is little to no value in doing the dishes, moving the lawn, or any household tasks. Raising kids becomes one of those chores that every parent does. I'm not saying that it's right, just pointing out that the society pressures us that we must be able to do all of that, while also prove our worth by bringing in an income. I'm sure Darby is not saying this because he's petty about his wife, but because he feels that what he does is simply not enough to prove himself. He needs something that he can show for. This is exacerbated by the fact that his wife is a high income earner, which makes him feel like what he is worth is not even a fraction of what Kirsty is worth. I see a couple ways for them to proceed, especially since they are both KZreadrs. One way is for Darby to embrace his Wife's job and become a part of what she does (perhaps by taking a job behind the scenes that would have measurable effect on what she does). The other way, is to take a few hours a week to work on a passion project of his. It can be an Etsy store, a hobby, or even a part-time job he enjoys. Logically, this would probably make very little money, or may even lose money, but in my opinion, self-worth is a part of rich life and for some people having a measurable amount of success is just as enjoable as going to a Spa or a nice restaurant. It's the sense of pride in what you do and it's something that's difficult to replace.

Kirsty’s KZread channel is successful because it aligns with her skills and passion. Darby’s KZread channel is for self help, and yet, it’s clear from this interview that he isn’t living it himself. 😢 Does he have a niche interest? Start there. It needs to be authentic. Not everyone is cut out for KZread. There’s nothing wrong with getting a “regular job” and working your way up like most people do. I think the fact that Kirsty experienced monumental success with KZread has actually created unrealistic expectations in him. The reality is that she is successful because she is talented, works hard and consistently puts out content. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Taking care of kids is hard - and harder if you wished you were doing something else. Hire a nanny a few times a week, and put the time into therapy, seeing a life coach, and putting a plan into action.

I am still finding that balance between ambition and contentment, but in a far better place in our marriage. ❤

I think Darby discounts his contribution because he's measuring it in monetary terms. He said, "Everyone does that" when talking about taking care of their children. NO THEY DON'T. Advice columns and therapist's offices are full of fathers who resent "babysitting" their own children or doing anything to maintain and run a household. Also, rest and relaxation are necessities for our health and well-being. In our Western "hustle" culture, we have been conditioned to think that rest has to be earned in order for us to deserve it. Unless we're "successful" we need to keep working until we're worthy. You're already worthy and deserving.

Bless him. It's incredibly hard, tiring and exhausting bringing up one child under 3, never mind two kids. I am a 'stay at home mum' with a little one. When you look into how much childcare costs per week /year it's a lot of money financially and you're not teaching them your values or spending that quality time with them which is priceless. My partner often mentions that he's the only one earning, so I tell him to either stay at home and look after our son and look after the jobs etc or pay for childcare which costs x amount. I remind him that's how much theoretically I am earning, without me doing this, he wouldn't be able to do whatever he wants whenever he wants or go to work. She could offer to pay for childcare for a bit to give him time to do his own work etc. She didn't need to add the term "sole" provider.

I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically... any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything's the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. Also loved how you used gratitude in your example of how he might think of visiting a spa. It was very interesting how he puts limits on his own happiness and the power of his invisible scripts. Why is that when a woman feels insecure or ashamed (about her body, for instance), we blame society for sending messages that tell her she's not enough...but when a man feels insecure or ashamed, we say it's his own fault? As if men don't also experience societal pressures telling them they're worthless unless they have X, Y, and Z.

I agree that it's the couple's responsibility to manage or resolve an issue that's causing relationship troubles. (Responsibility and fault are two different things. If I was molested as a child, that wasn't my fault, but my recovery and what I do with the rest of my life is still my responsibility. No one can take that responsibility in my stead.) But I also think the likelihood of successfully dealing with those relationship problems is much greater if the insecure partner isn't being blamed for having feelings that they probably don't have much control over. That's why it matters where we place the blame and how much of it we decide to give out.

  • @artisticagi
    @artisticagi Жыл бұрын

They are such a great couple. No bitterness, anger, impatience or contempt. Just understanding and a mutual goal to reach a resolution. They are so brave to put themselves out there and be judged by the whole world potentially. (Well here I go) I think the husband might also need to examine his feelings of worthiness, he might have a core belief that is blocking him from being able to progress with KZread or anything else. In addition to all of the great advise shared here also. If I made more than my husband tho I’d rather have one like him than the type who is comfortable spending all the money and doesn’t feel the need to contribute. I would find two things to do (spa and car) and work towards feeling ok doing them. Or have him pay for part of it, even if it’s just a small part.

How I thought BEFORE I listened to the end.Darby would happily take a new Tesla because he says it’s “for the kids, for his wife, it’s practical, it’s useful”. I don’t buy it. My sense is that he’s not that excited about going to a spa. He has no problem eating at a Michelin star restaurant. Darby needs to get 100% honest with himself. They should be seeing a good couples counselor to break through his resistance. The way they intend AFTER listening all the way to the end: WOW!! Fabulous coaching AND Darby’s turn around and they agreement/plan is fabulous! 👏🏻I can’t wait to hear how they are doing in 6 months!

This episode hit home for me and I quite figure out why. I live off of my KZread channel and generate enough revenue from it to live quite comfortably. Still, it somehow doesn't feel "like a real job" and like Kirsty I'm wondering when it will all go south and crumble. I get comments almost daily that people really look forward to my next video (I post daily) and that it's a stable point in their sometimes erratic life. And yet, I can't quite silence that "get a real job with a real income" voice.

Great interview. I hear their West Country accents (being from there also as a UK West Country girl- so lovely to hear/see)! If Darby had videos about the life of a stay at home dad and everything that involved I think that would be very interesting. As a couple, they do encapsulate a modern set up/gender role reversal that was never the norm but is perhaps becoming more common. I find that fascinating. I would definitely watch videos that reflect this dynamic and his experiences as a father and husband in this world! Even more so if Darby has some life hacks to share that he's acquired. I hope they are able to adjust to their new life as they are clearly such lovely people and deserve much happiness

Yes, and I think it is common to feel this way in relationships where there is a wide income gap; the person making less money feels insecure about their ability to provide for themselves, and potentially, uncomfortable about asking their partner to spend money on them. I'm sure gender roles and societal expectations play a role for him as well.

If his YT channel isnt working, why not pivot? Make a channel about being a house husband whose wife is a big earner? That would be niche (which you need to be these days) and you have endless content because you are living it. You could discuss your feelings on the channel which viewers love and give tips and tricks on household running from a male perspective. The household space is heavily populated by female youtubers so you would have good traction there. In the meantime understand that running the house and being an at home Dad is a very tough job which allows your wife to focus on earning. You are both working hard to achieve the money so you should both feel fine about sharing/spending it. Lovely couple. Wishing you the best of luck.

So many men struggle with seeing their partner as competition instead of a teammate when the woman is more financially successful. I empathize with them both. It is hard when you feel like a failure and have someone to compare yourself with in your own home. It’s also hard to succeed and not have your partner feel happy about your success. Hopefully Darby can feel professionally satisfied in the future in his own right, even if the incomes never quite equalize.

This is why I think people need to place a dollar figure on unpaid labor. Literally count up how much is saved in childcare, meal plan company or chef, housekeeper, landscaper, bookkeeper, handyman etc. All of these things people get PAID for it. Darby has absolutely NO IDEA what he wants in life! Absolutely no idea! It is beyond painful to watch your partner sink into depression because he has not found his purpose in life. She has found her calling in art and she has turned it into her livelihood. He has not. He will ultimately sink this relationship if he doesn't learn to value what he has. He only wants a KZread channel because she has one. He has no idea of the metrics / how many views he needs to get the $1000 he claims he'll be happy making per month. Smh He's subconsciously jealous of her success and is depriving her of celebrating that success as a COUPLE. Darby needs some serious therapy. He's incredibly insecure because he isn't earning and he has no idea what his "thing" is. They need to start putting some money aside in a trust fund for the kids, start paying each other a salary, get a financial advisor, set out a clear plan for investing and their rich life. Otherwise, Kirsty needs to start putting money aside for a divorce because Darby's unfulfillment, invisible scripts and poor money mindset will sink the whole ship if he doesn't shift his mindset. Smh.

Money really makes life easier - like we for example have someone cleaning the house every week, so none of us has to do that - that's a big luxury I can recommend to anyone. Because the whole "I clean, you don't" argument creates a lot of friction in a relationship. What money ultimate is it takes away all the stress from your life. Darby definitely hard troubles facing the deadlines/milestones being set. In a way setting a deadline/milestones is like setting yourself up for potential failure. You either succeed on the milestone or you don't. Its scary, and I can understand why he would prefer to not commit to any deadlines/metrics because it's safe. It means he can keep trying on his own timeline, and not have to face completely changing his career goals. I would suggest one thing to Darby, put a line in the sand on the last go at becoming a KZreadr. Put everything you got into, and if it doesn't work, find a new approach or career. During change, its uncomfortable. However, after change, you get to setting into a new life you worked for and sometimes that life is actually enjoyable. You end up being grateful for putting yourself in a position of change. For example, I was miserable in my previous part-time role. I had made it a goal to get a full time job there, but after 6 months I had no deadline of when I will become full-time. I couldn't let go of the commitment to myself because that meant I failed. However, it took me admitting to the failure of my current role and deciding 'hey it's okay, not every door is unlocked. Lets try the next one'. I went to DevCons, met a company that looked promising, and made the jump into a completely new line of work. The beginning part of course was scary, but damn I am so grateful that I did it. Forgive yourself for failing on a goal, and push on the next one. Keep going.

I am yelling at the screen - HELP HER!! She's got something that works and you have children. Help her with the kids so that she can keep growing. Research how to make $50K off the money that she has and find an investment tools that you guys can make more money off the cash she has (she mentioned that in passing!). It's a FAMILY business - support her!!!! Some times you will be the star, sometimes she will be. That is how marriage works for a long time. You guys have the benefits of time. Help her build her money so that you guys can crush it for a long time and go to all the spas you want!!! My husband and I have 3 businesses (we used to have 4 and sold one). There were times when he was doing better and there are times when I do better, but the most important thing is to think of yourself as a unit and that your contribution is also making sure the house runs and everyone is fed to be able to create. Your time will come!

Is he punishing himself for not “succeeding” on a platform which is based on validation by other people? I feel like people reject the needy energy of that dynamic. I think he should set small successes in doing something he loves to do instead of only loving success. As well as changing the mindset that he can only love himself and reward himself if he reaches a self imposed level of success. Instead maybe he could reward himself with loving self talk for working hard and feel fulfilled by doing things he feels passionate about regardless of the attention he receives from the public. He’s very lucky to have that luxury of time and freedom from having to support the household. Great couple! Wish them all the best.

Respect to Kristy and Darby for their willingness to share about their financial life. Darby is an amazing provider, even Kristy is the main earner. He takes care of kids, supports Kristy and is working on his own ambitions. Hats off to Kristy for all the success at this young age and being an example, that you can get rich fast and not lose yourself. She is also clearly amazing as a partner, she seems very in her feminine energy and it is obvious she respects him and all that he provides as her partner and father to their kids. And their communication is also very good, they are trying to solve a problem together, and not accuse each other. Also respect to Ramit, for being excellent in role of a coach and consultant. Watching this was for me a coaching, consulting and therapy all in one. He even delivers tough love, without shaming anyone. That's the type of person I want to learn from. Subscribed.

Darby said something about wanting to make even 50 grand per year within the next 5 to 10 years. If he spent 5 to 10 years focusing on the business with his wife he could surely help increase that $450k annually into much more than another $50k.

Money is maybe 20% of the success of a marriage. Maybe 10%. Maybe less. You can both be living under a bridge and still have mad love for each other and happy. I've personally seen it. So many different ways to contribute to a family and a partnership.

It'd be interesting to see the script flipped. If Darby was making $450k and his wife was home not earning but doing loads of work, and he wanted to bring them to a nice spa, would he say, "wait, you can't come because you didn't earn it"? I don't think so (and if he did, it'd be horrifying). Just shows how self-talk is often toxic and breaks down when examined under close scrutiny. Darby was exhausting to listen to. I'm convinced this guy is wasting some of the best years of his relationship because he is so committed to an inadequate definition of success.

"what does success mean to you" is a really great question, especially for men (since they have more pressure generally to be successful). My husband even said that he would rather be successful than happy. Very interesting how it's so hardwired in men (women too but usually not to the same degree)

I have 5 kids, and this parent seems burnt out and will benefit from getting a job maybe a trade? I think some drastic changes need to happen. First hire a nanny or aue pair, then he can start pursuing a career. Second, BOTH pick out something they want to enjoy from the money. I totally agree Ramit about dreaming together. I really appreciate your candor and am learning a lot.

Darby, like most men, need to see the value they bring besides money. Running a household with kids is providing and very valuable. If it wasn't, people wouldn't pay for babysitters, chefs, housecleaners, mechanics, lawn care specialists, plumbers, etc. My heart broke a little when he said he wouldn't respect himself if he didn't make 100k by 35. Most _people_ won't have that much in a bank account. I'm sure to his wife and kids, him being around and helping to make their lives fantastic engenders feelings of respect and love ❤ He has the world right now, I really hope he comes to appreciate that.

Men can't live the way his living. Its a damage to his manhood and masculinity. Thats why he is struggling now and can't seem to accept the situation. All this therapy and talking doesn't do anything but delay the inevitable. Which is a divorce. She will soon realize that she has outgrown him, regardless of his stay at home dad role. The only solution he has is to dedicate his off time to a KZread channel. Build a online store for a side buisness and get a concrete trade job outside of the house. Electrician, Powerlines men etc. Invest in diversified portfolio/ Mutual Fund and watch his money grow and create cash flow from real-estate within 5-10 years. He will feel fulfilled by keeping busy with all those projects. I would even recommend he start writing a book about his experience and target economic themes of our society with expectation. There's his purpose 🙏
