Hi, Do you have measurements for this? I'm actually looking for a small hand plane to finish up smaller workpieces, especially to do some trimming after glueups. It would be really nice to make one myself. I think actually it would be nice for a plane that size to have it be a low-angle plane. You know, the ones where the blade is actually turned the other way around. Some measurements I can see from you actually taking them on video. It would be nice to have them though, especially the thicknesses. I have never made anything out of metal before since I'm coming from the woodworking side, but I would love to try this. Aesthetically, it might have been even nicer if you take a brass base or sides and combine that with the 1095 steel. Thank you, your video is really well made and inspiring!

Hey, I’m glad you like the video. The steel for the blade was about 4mm thick. The base plate was also 4mm and the sides 2mm. It might have been easier with slightly thicker sides. Most of the dimensions are pretty arbitrary. The angle of the blade is important. Everything else is mostly a matter of taste. Brass could also be nice but I like that the dovetails become almost invisible with steel plates. Don’t hesitate if you have more questions and have fun with your own build!

Very nice! Looks like it would be a pleasure to use, as most good looking tools are. But I have to ask, where did you get those hack saw blades? My sharp wood saws won't cut through pine as fast as those hack saw blades.😉

hey man, i'm a big fan of your videos and currently planning on building my own metal router plane. in each comercial type, there is a thickened middle part to hold the blade. this makes me wonder if you are still happy with your version and if you think that your blade is held firmly and stable enough. thanks in advance, greetings

Hey, I‘m glad you like my videos. Indeed there are some problems with the stability of the blade. But I don‘t think the thickness of the material is the problem. I used quite a chunky piece of steel. If I do it again, I would design it to have two points of contact between the body and the blade and not the flat contact surface that is very hard to get right by hand. Good luck with your build!

Thanks! The drill press was made by a company called Ixion in Germany. As far as I can tell it‘s from the 1930ies.

Both:) most of the wood and mild steel parts are scraps from other projects or that people have given me. The tool steel I order online because I want to be sure what I‘m dealing with because of heat treatment etc.

Mostly eBay. Sometimes you can get a bunch of cutoffs from industrial seller really cheap. There are also sellers who cater for the Hobby knife making market.

Is this some kind of cold welding? I love it. I have absolutely no idea of anything more than what we learned at middle and high school in metal and wood working but this is very interesting and the result is beautiful 🥰

It‘s not really cold welding. This process is called peening. Although you might get some solid state diffusion over time? I‘m not sure.

Work on your hand filling tolerances, you are easily off by more than 0.01-0.02 on most of your dovetails. There not should be more than a tiny gap in them, I try to shoot for a perfect fit. I file check, file, check and file till I get a perfect fit.

What’s the name of that oddball file you used to start peining the dovetails at 10:57?

That is a piece of an old file that I prepared specifically for this purpose.

I would try to cut tighter dovetails and leave more extra material for preening.

Yes, it’s a standard file. I use whatever sandpaper I can get, because I g through a lot of it :) mostly I use cheap wet and dry paper from the hardware store.

@@imadethischannel Do you ever use emery cloth? I know that is supposed to be pretty good for keeping up with metal... also how do you get your sandpaper in those long belts like that? Mine come in little sheets and wear down super quickly due to all of the sanding but due to the amount of metal left on your sandpaper it looks like you use the same piece for quite a while... any suggestions?

I have no experience with emery cloth. Make sure you use sandpaper that is made for metal and don‘t go too fine too quickly. It looses the extreme bite it has in the beginning very quickly but then it stays usable for a while until it wears off too much. I also apply quite a lot of pressure when sanding.

Oh and some papers you can buy as rolls. For me it‘s more convenient than sheets. You’ll find it online.
