I made this carving knife

Some say that carving wood is a really satisfying activity. There's only one way to find out. First, I had to make an appropriate tool, though. It was a fun project!

In my humble opinion, I believe that true craftsman are a dying breed. Not saying that people who use power tools aren't craftsman, just saying that doing it by hand brings a certain essence and quality that tools just doesn't. Pride of ownership and craft are on the way out in our country. Sad but true...but I'm gonna keep on being old school as long as I can. Thanks for the video. You reminded me of why I do things how I do them. Much appreciated

A nice small little cutter! Ash is a (very) hard wood, so I can’t believe that plug was merely cut into two with a kitchen knife. It would be impossible even with sawing movements, no matter how sharp the knife was and what magic steel , it was made from. You need a saw to do that.

Сразу видна старая слесарная школа мастеров. Нож будет очень удобен для резьбы по дереву. Но, на мой взгляд круглая рукоятка - это недостаток, нож будет скатываться со стола и прокручиваться в руке. В остальном всë супер.

I need to mention that thinning on your Atoma flattening stone will make it wear out quick. I used to use my atoma for lots thinning for about 6 months and now its slower than an 800 grit diamond stone. Only use it for flattening, that's what it's made to do. For lots of grinding and thinning I tend to use either sandpaper (I usually wet my atoma and stick the sand paper on top, it's perfectly flat and has a great grip) or I use the "Sharpening Supplies" Grinder stone. It's an 80 grit water stone and works FAST. You will need some loose silicon carbide grit however, such as 60/90 tumbling grit. Other than that there is "THE BEAST" (this is it's real name) 50 grit diamond stone that's pretty cheap. Also to make annealing easier (and softer) its nice to have a little pot full of burnt ash. When work is hot, stick it deep into the ash. It cools down very slowly and it's very soft afterwards, this is what most blacksmiths do.

very nice job. but i have a question . is the inside of the file carbon steel. because i think they only add loose carbon on the outside of the file and harden that. or am i wrong and is it all carbon steel. i mean does it hold it sharpness for a long time?
@imadethischannel
3 ай бұрын
Thanks! This one was all carbon steel. But I have had files that were only case hardened. It took me a while to understand why I could not harden them. Now I try to harden a piece of a file before I use it for a project.

Man, what saw blades do you use? How long does it typically take you to saw through stuff like files and threaded rods?
@imadethischannel

These are standard saw blades and the time depends very much on the thickness of the material. Treaded rods and files are pretty quick, though. Check out my router plane video if you want to see some serious hand sawing workout ;)
