In light of the new Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I decided to put my amateur bookbinding skills to the test. In this book project, I took a used set of Hunger Games Series books and rebinded them into a leather-bound book set.

    You're doing a good job. For the leather part: 1. Try and trim or burnish some of the suede side. I noticed it's rather hairy which creates space between leather and the textblock. 2. Try and apply glue to the leather instead of the book. That way the leather becomes lightly damp which makes it more maliable. 3. If your folding tool doesn't create the desired sharpness around the embossing you can finish it later by using a dull but edged tool which you can heat up slightly (so make sure it's metal) and then contouring all the edges again. 4. A ripe to work out he spine in de drying process when you've just applied the leather works good too. Especially around the spine.

    Also typically when you put books in a press, you want the spines to stick out, so just the covers and text block get smooshed, otherwise the spine is keeping the press from fully smooshing the rest. Love your projects! You’re rocking the leather!

    A book series that I'd love to see you bind is Warrior Cats! I loved the series growing up, but all but one of my books were paperback (Bluestar's Prophecy was the exception, for those curious), and because I got the first series from like 4 separate places the heights don't match either. It'd be really cool to see you bind them! (Mind you, I'm only really asking for the first series, not the whole franchise. You've bound 6 books in a video before, I'm not going to ask you to do over 40 ^^')

    Having worked at Tandy for a while, and having done leatherwork for most of my life, here's what I'll say. EcoFlo All-in-One is exactly that. It's dye and topcoat that is applied all at once. It's vital that you get a clean, consistent coat in one go, and before it dries. If you let part of it dry, then do more of it, you'll see the line between the sections. Cova Color is an acrylic paint. It's a thin acrylic designed for leather, but it is paint. And the actual leather dye from EcoFlo, Fiebings, or Angelus...the best way to get a clean and consistent coat is to airbrush it on or lightly dampen your leather before dyeing it.

  • @amandajakle8202
    @amandajakle82026 ай бұрын

    So, I'm just going to hop on here and say two things... (I don't comment often, sorry) 1. These turned out great even with the struggles you had getting the green to apply evenly (I've had that problem with thinner dyes, too- it's not easy to get it just right). I totally feel your pain. I've used that last brand of dye for a while now (it's the only brand they sell at Tandy Leather and the local Michael's store), and it can be totally finicky. Light colors are especially hard to use because they behave almost like watercolors in that the layering effect is very, very difficult to avoid. Which brings me to number: 2. With those thinner dyes, I've found that, a lot of times, it absorbs more evenly and leaves you having to do fewer "coats" of it if you dampen the leather first. Some great leatherworking channels I've learned from are Dark Horse Workshop, Corter Leather, and (maybe a little surprisingly) Four Keys Book Arts. And Sea Lemon and Nerdforge are awesome! Another great bookbinding channel is DAS Bookbinding, if you're interested- I use his methods all the time for making journals and sketchbooks. Just wanted to throw those out there. I'm no KZreadr or anything, but I've done this as a personal hobby for many years, now, and I learned SOOOOO much from those channels when I was just starting with leather-binding books. (Some of them weren't around then, others were, but I've learned something from all of them.) Always love, love, LOVE your videos, Jess. You always bring a smile to my face, and your creativity is inspiring. I can't wait to see what you come up with next, and I also can't wait to watch you continue growing in your craft. You got this!

    After watching both your videos and Nerdforge's I'm having an itching to either complete a leather bound set of the Wings of Fire series or see it done. It's a big series, the main three arcs spanning 15 books, and that's not including the Legends books or the Winglets. Finding hardbacks of all 15 books isn't easy either, or necessarily cheap. I was looking at it the other day and getting hardback copies of all but two would cost a Benjamin and a half. That's not taking into consideration the cost of other materials needed and the time it would take. Still, even if not to make a bound book set, it's a pretty decent read. Aimed for a younger audience, but it's been consistent in my life since I bought the first book back in my sixth grade Book Fair. Only thing it made me regret was the amount of OCs I've created and subsequently forgotten due to it, lol.

    ive only read the first one so yknow kinda need to read them all Also a series i think you would find neat is Wings of Fire (though its a VERY long series so bounding it may not be a good idea)

    I was thinking Wings of Fire too! Maybe only the first couple of books in the series, like the first arc? That way Jess won't have to do all fifteen, because that seems like a bit much lol

    Surely do Harry Potter next! I loved this video. So unique and so satisfying watching it all come together in the end!

    I just started re-bind of harry potter, I couldn't bring myself to rip the cover off. So I had my husband do it. Im a chicken. Id recommend getting a few bricks, wrap them in some paper. Works great when your book press is occupied. Love this project!

    These book projects could be really cool for giving books with beat up paper covers a new life life.

    honestly when you said you were adding ribbons i thought it was gonna be those bookmark-ribbons that fancy writing books have lol. The books came out super great! i'd love to turn my four Dark Crystal books into cooler looking ones like this (if nothing else i'd at least loose the stupid NETFLIX "sticker" on the front) but i'm way to scared to touch them bc they're just to precious to me lol.
