I Made an 1890's Victorian Bodice! Anne of Green Gables Would Be Proud!

Join me on my latest sewing project, another pattern test for Kenna Sews! This plus size Victorian bodice was patterned from an extant garment and could also be used for early Edwardian fashion with the provided alternate sleeve pattern. I enjoyed delving into fashion history on this project and used a combination of hand sewing and machine sewing. I think Anne Shirley of Anne of Green Gables would be very pleased with the puffed sleeves! Thank you for joining me here on costube for my plus sized sewing and costuming adventures!

I’m so impressed with how well KZread has taught me because my brain went right to the bag lining idea too and previously I didn’t even know what it’s called or that it’s different than flat lining. That is the credit that I give to KZread and all of you awesome creators that have taught me so much🥰. Thank you. And Anne Shirley thanks you.😊

I think it would work with a bag lining, just not accurate to the original. ❤️❤️

I absolutely love this silhouette! Right now my sewing is focused on quilting but, I also have some garment sewing lined up on the back burner. Time is not always a friend… Anne Shirley and I approve! ♥️👍🤓🐈‍⬛

It’s beautiful as always! Anne would definitely approve. 1890s fashion is my jam. Most of my wardrobe is inspired by the era. Love me some puffy sleeves!

My cutting table is just a table too. My husband attached large square blocks of wood to the base of the legs to lift it height. This made all the difference.

I feel you, contemplating the mockup as lining idea and I admit I probably would have tried, ripprd it out and made the proper lining, possibly doing the whole thing over because my shortcut just ruined the outer fabric. So Chapeau! for doing it properly the first time around! It looks so good on you, absolutely lovely.

I am obsessed with the green! and the sleeves! I am definitely going to look at this pattern site because it may help in a dress I found that's crying for help. the bodice was beautifully done, but everything from the closure choice, bodice trim, detail and skirt was rushed. I think it was civil war era inspired but can easily be converted to a later era which might be a cemented plan since this was a thrifted find and finding the same fabric or something similar to it is limited.

I think it is beautiful. Question: instead of cutting the new lining, you already cut the toile, couldn’t you have ripped the seams and used those pieces to flatline the bodice? To save your back? That would test the pattern ok, wouldn’t it?

I am working on a simple corset that I found on the Internet for free and it had no instructions it just literally is four pieces of paper and good luck! And after making the alterations necessary, I did exactly the same thing! I thought to myself, "Welp! I guess I have a liner!

Have you tried getting bed risers? I popped those underneath a dining room table and it brought it up to kitchen counter height and it makes it much easier to work. I'm also wondering if wearing one of your corsets while you work help support your back? Yeah… Cutting is my least favorite part of the whole project. Lol
