You have no idea how much of a relief it was to find someone plusize into sewing and costuming. While Bernadette Banner and Morgan Donner are absolutely brilliant people, I've always wonder how to accomodate garments to my size as a beginning seamstress. Enchanted Rose Costumes and Costuming Drama are alson great for that and all of you are and godsend. So thank you for putting content outthere even if it's scary. (Also, Freya looks fantastic and I may try to do a dressform like that one day)

I'm a plus size too and I need to see how other people of all shapes and sizes look in their garments, as well as sewing them. Bernadette looks wonderful in everything, but I am interested in how others look in their walking skirts and shirtwaists, as well as how to size up patterns and just everything else too!! I love your choice of fabric for Freya.

Threads Magazine has instructions for padding out a dress form in issue 161. The form is a removable cover the way the Met gets costumes ready for a new opera.

Thank you for putting this on the internet! I was thinking about padding my dress form, but "clothing" it in a bootstrap form seems way better. During the video I thought a couple of times: "Wow, she is so in peace with herself and her size, I wish I was there, too." And in the end you talked about your own vulnerability and I realized: "Okay, it's work everyday for all of us. But it is worth it." Thank you for that, too. I send you my love and respect.

@@londoncherieback2206 I have started collecting patterns from the main companies, but have been learning how to make them actually fit me, will take way more math than I am used to, which is ironic because my mother actually wrote math text books and made her own clothes for much of her life, including almost everything the bridal party wore when my parents got married. She made the guys buy pants, but she did everything else while doing graduate work. Lol, I barely got the alterations to my own dress done the night before my wedding!

They do sell a multi sized version of the dress form that ranges from 18 to 28 so you can make various sizes. I went that route for my own dress form while using a personalized one for my husband's. Both came out well. But next time I make one, I'm so stealing Ms. Rebecca's idea of using a smaller dress form!

The fabric you chose for Freya is gorgeous and it reflects you so well. As a large woman myself it is wonderful to see a person who does historical costuming who is closer to my size. As someone else has said, Morgan Donner and Bernadette Banner are brilliant, but seeing other women our size doing this is a huge help to getting us to give it a go and not being afraid to be seen doing things we love. So thank you for making this dress form and just being willing to show the rest of us that it can be done and done spectacularly.

I made one using the duck tape system, but it was both hard to put a pin in and pins came out sticky, LOL. Since I lost weight this year, I needed a new one, so I'm taping up my bootstrap pattern as i write this. I feel bad replacing my me#2, and have been giving her hugs every time I pass by her. Both because she served me well and because I want to reinforce that I love myself no matter my size. My husband, who feeds us, went keto and we started watching Dr. Ken Berry, who is a lot of fun to learn from. Only mentioning it because I'm 60 years old and wish I knew it was actually possible to break my carb addiction and fix my lifelong IBS. But seriously, give Freya a hug! She is beautiful :) Oh dear, I just noticed I actually commented 2cyears ago!

It is an exercise in self love and acceptance and now I can make clothes without patterns! I did laugh because it took 5 cheap pillows worth of stuffing. Thank you for posting this using the smaller hard dress form inside. I am stuck at the bootstrap instructions on how to make the interior support tube area. However, I picked up a dress form just like you did at a yard sale for $8. Hubby and I discussed using it as the "insides" of my form, but I said, "no, I am a stick to the pattern, gal". Guess what? Seeing your success with the hard dress form as the interior, I am going that route. I will try to post pics when completed. By the way, congrats on posting this and showing courage to say "hey...this is me and my form." The majority of us out here are also larger women of all ages, shapes and stages of life. Courage and bravery are not shown by doing what is easy, but what is hard. Brava! And I love the patterned fabric for Freya. So often forms are done with plain fabric (for various reasons); it was startling refreshing to see someone taking the road less traveled! Brava en plus!

What a relief to have a plus size costumer to follow. I have been wishing for this. I watch Angela Clayton, Rachel Maksy and Micarah. After awhile it gets depressing-there is no “snatched waist” at my house.😊

Thank you for sharing this video. Freya is beautiful, and I hope she helps you to make some beautiful draped fashions for yourself! I think it was a great idea to use a smaller, inexpensive dress form for Freya's core. 😀

I’ve been contemplating making one of these Bootstrap forms for a long time. In fact I’ve already purchased the pattern and the base fabric. It was good to see how it comes together. I’ve got to get the rest of the support materials and then I can start. In my very limited experience of trying to self draft a pattern based on an existing garment and fit it to myself, with only my kids to help me, I figured out that to do much sewing for myself, I was going to need a dress form. I’m hoping mine matches me as well as yours matches you. It is encouraging to see your efforts and I appreciate your vulnerability to help us out in our sewing adventures. Your dress form looks great and I bet it will be a huge asset to you. Edited to add: I can’t believe you’re 40! I’m 44 and I thought you were at least 10 years younger than me.

I loved this video. I selected it because it was plus-size, but I understand feeling vulnerable. I had a plus size dress form made from duct tape and seeing it without "clothes" was very uncomfortable for me. Totally relate. I love the idea of using an existing form for the internals. That might just get me over the hump of being intimidated to finally make my bootstrap dress form.

As a big woman myself, I could so fully relate to the whole experience and emotions that played out in this whole clip. I could sense the dread and apprehension WITH you, in laying everything so bare, in front of a wide audience, who could use their anonymity to lash out cruel remarks, if they so wished. I could sense the anxiety in me build up throughout the stitching together, and finally filling up, of Freya. And....Voila! You did it!! The initial "shock" or disappointment, if you like, at seeing a dress form totally in contrast to what our preconceived minds are accustomed to, waned into relief, and the realisation that the shape that emerged, was as REAL as could be! The shape of a woman who hopefully lives life to the full. Maybe indulging a little bit too much here and there, but hey, also a woman who definitely exudes fun, warmth and compassion. What was so interesting to me, was that the longer I stared at Freya, summing up her features, the more she became REAL and someone I could fully relate to. The choice of fabric was spot on, too, adding to the overall soft, approachable vibe. You go, Girl!
