All amp companies are in trouble except maybe Line6. 90% of players have figured out they only need a 5 watt lunchbox amp or modeling unit at most. More are deciding to just use an iphone app or PC amp emulator. Good quality tubes were already hard to obtain and have gotten even harder to get. Combine that with a rapidly aging out player base and fewer younger players seriously taking up guitar and you have lots of amp companies folding.

Since the 90s Randall is just a side business of some sort with no philosophy at all behind it. As long as losses ain't too high noone cares, if they make money or lose. Also since the 90s Randall has been extremely lucky with artists. Dime and Kurt for example promoted their amps more or less by accident. I am not sure how Kirk Hammet got into there, he was probably just too nice to say no... xD Mike Fortin and Ola Englund were the last lucky thing that happened due to Randalls ties to Dime, I am sure. So, they'll be waiting for the next unicorn to fall into their laps. I think they can afford.

This is pretty much what always happens with "vulture" firms -- they scoop up intellectual property and absorb an existing workforce, but then put downward pressure on management to maximize profits for the shareholders without taking any risks whatsoever. The R&D budget is chalked up as an expense rather than an investment, so it gets slashed into oblivion. No amount of talent can overcome a combined lack of vision and money from investors, and the company flounders. They're a cash cow in a risk-averse market now, and it's only a matter of time before they're sent to the slaughterhouse. That's really sad about DigiTech, too -- I've owned several of their multi-effects units over the years, and always thought they were great for experimenting, and really dug the built-in 4 track recording on the GNX3. The Rubberneck is an amazing unit, too; I wound up picking that over a Carbon Copy because the thing is so damned wild. The Boneshaker was a cool pedal, too, and probably shouldn't have been discontinued. Apparently the whole team was laid off in 2018. Again, this is another symptom of a company being bled dry by a vulture capital management firm.

Adding to this video, 4 years later. I spoke briefly with Mike Fortin back in 2017 with some technical questions regarding the new line at the time. He said he only had his hand in designing the tube amps. Randall was going to have him redesign the solid state RG series and other killer projects that will never see the light of day. There is no design work happening, everyone is gone except for Joe. Randall as a company is dead and they are simply selling remaining stock and will likely shelf the brand after. He had also mentioned that all the new Randall amp lines were made in China and assembled with Chinese components so you have to expect the type of quality that goes with that. He didn't go into more detail, but you could just sense in the overall tone that things were not good for Randall. Again, this was 2017, but 7 years later, his words still ring true as we see nothing new from Randall, nothing at NAMM 2024, and the remaining amp stock has skyrocketed in price. Such a bummer.

Lets be honest here..Randall didnt have anything great to begin with... There were some good amps but not great enough worth prolonging and keep selling to keep the company going..Look at other companies like Peavey and Mesa, they keep recycling 5150s,Rectifiers and Marks for decades.Besides the new downsized versions they havent done anything new but they have a great product to pay the bills for another 50 years. Randall didnt have anything good like that hence why there is no continuation of old products. So they had to make a whole new line of products and while they did a nice job with the metal genre, they did just that, claiming only a portion of the market (not everyone plays modern metal). And now apparently they kinda stuck with that. If you ask me they should keep the Diavlo range as they are cool amps for their tube line and should invest on their solid state amps.Randall was always known for the better solid state amps out there and currently there is no other company investing much on that.

The first amp I bought was a Randall RG1003h, and it was dead out of the box. Returned it for, amusingly enough, an Egnater Tweaker 15. That tiny little amp crushes literally every other head I've ever heard for almost every kind of tone, and it only cost me $300. If it were footswitchable like the 40 watt version, I don't think I'd ever see myself wanting to buy another head. Aside from that unfortunate first impression, the issue I think Randall has had is the fact that they don't have any advertising, PR, anything to make people think "Hey these amps are good and competitive with brands like Peavey, Marshall, and Mesa, try them". They have their branding and target market, but they don't do much of anything to reach that market. They don't even have proper social media presence, as far as I know. Washburn has the same problem, like you said. I wouldn't have known they even existed at this point if I didn't watch Ola's videos to see that he used them. And hell, I own a Washburn Solar, and it's the best guitar I've ever played, but I don't think I could ever buy another Washburn if they keep neglecting the brand like they have been.

The process seems to be fair for Synergy and the other companies involved, plus the system is expandable. The modules are built by the other parties not interpretations. Morgan made by Morgan, Bogner built by Bogner, Synergy built by Synergy, Soldano built by Soldano. The coolest thing is you add to your existing amp, build a rack, or use Synergy various tube heads. Much better product than the previous. They have a few minor things, I'm sure they will improve. Plus, where can you combine Friedman and Morgan in stereo, for example. They have made tons of modules already. The demo of the Fender amp getting a hot rod overdrive and a Marshall adding a super clean is what convinced me. Plus, the old Engaged, Randall, and other 3rd part modules are backwards compatible!

I've owned a few Randalls over the years. I currently have the RD45h. Great amp, but sure, they could have simply released an updated version with an added channel, if even just to show some progress. When they started coming out with the full-on metal amps I was pumped. I was glad to see them owning the path. Too many manufacturers try to keep a toe in every pond, spread too thin. Randall's focus went super-narrow, and then they failed to continue development. And still, despite their higher end metal amps, the stigma still follows. People usually see them as the company who built sub-par solid state amps in the 90's-2000's. I hope they find a way to regain focus and the attention of the consumer. They have contributed a lot but that's no reason to simply sit back and ignore the future.

I know I'm a nobody just playing and recording my own music but I started playing in 1995 so it's going on 25 years here and I always try a new amp here and there and at the end of the day I end up right back on Randall's door step. In my opinion and this is just mine obviously they make very good metal amplifiers. I currently have the diavlo 100 and the nulifier and they're the best amps I've used to date. Then again like you said they're fortin designed but even the rg line they have has some serious metal balls. I personally think they'll be just fine. I'm probably wrong but ots just me hoping i guess. There is a large group of people loyal to this brand believe it or not. I know dudes in their 40s been playing randall forever and say they'll never switch and I'm honestly on that same road currently. I agree here. A lot of great brands have been watered down or ignored because of pure negligence on the part of management. My own advice for Randall follows: 1. As you said, figure out what kinda brand it should be. If they wanna do the metal and rock thing, cool. Just get a roadmap. 2. There are lots of people out there who love amps and circuits that probably need a job. Hire some good peeps who know electronics and good designs. 3. Reach out to artists, but have some standout products that don't just push a big name. As a consumer, the end result is the same regardless of what the logo says. If a sig head is good, great. But don't let that be the only thing good about Randall. 4. This sort of circles back to my first point. For the future, have easy feedback tools for customers. If you want to make a difference you need real numbers on what people want, what they like and dislike about a product, etc. Make it fun. Do contests and shit like that. Basically anything to inspire honest feedback from real users, not just paid users. Great videeo as always. :)

I feel like if Randall decided to work on their solid state amplifiers and made a line for the modern guitar player, that they’d catch on. From what I understand, solid state was fairly popular in the 80’s and 90’s. If they could bring that into the modern era of guitar playing, they could possibly pull theirselves out of that hole.

The RG3003 is about the best SS bang for your buck going right now. It's a bit noisy (thank god for the built in gate) and only one EQ. If they put a separate EQ for all three channels (like the old Crate VTX350H), it would be almost perfect. The RG3003 comes alive through 4 Eminence EM12's. An RG100 re-release would be pretty badass, too.

Times right now might look grim for them but they may be in the same condition BC Rich was in not too long ago. Truly they do need to keep all their customers and even potential customers aware that some sort of change is coming or tell us all that new things are on the way. It would be a shame to see them go away , but someone may step up and take control of the situation and put this company back on track . It is needed. Who knows?

The effects are there, sure, but you can only choose between reverb or delay at one particular time. But it is, the best clean channel I have heard past the fender stuff. It can be a funk players dream. I can sit there for hours funking, and I'm not even a funk player. I like modern metal. But single coils through that clean channel are heavenly, I'm not giving that amp up yet.

I like Solid State. They're predictable and reliable. Also don't need any pedals with a good three channel SS head other than my Morley Volume Plus and my Morley Wah. Nothing else in the signal path. Solid State are pretty fucking picky about what speakers to use, though. They need neutral speakers that don't color your sound much, like EM12 Legends or EVM12L. I also run EMG 85s because they're pretty neutral (see a trend?) and with the 18volt mod, they open up a bit becoming more dynamic.

It was a muddy sounding mess and extremely unreliable. I also ordered a new Diavlo and it was defective right out of the box. It got sent back very quickly. I also know I'm going to get flack for it but the Satan was a $2100 amp produced in China. I'm not saying all Chinese things are bad by any shot but I've had no good luck with overseas amps. You have a lot of amps to choose from in that price range. Maybe someone has some input but I own 2 Randall v2s and they both have an occasional power issue. When I turn it on the speakers don’t get much power to them. It only works when I crank the master and strum the guitar hard and then it breaks through super loud and works fine until it gets transported. Sometimes you don’t have to transport it for it to do that. Any input? Could be anything. I’m wondering if it’s the transformer, capacitor or tube...Ive reseated the tubes and still does it. Those seem to be fine and work fine when the amp starts working right again. The whole thing with me having to crank the master and strum until the power comes through has to tell someone that knows something about amps something.

First.. I would stop trying to compete in the tube boo teek market.. Start small, and fill the room with competitvely priced, but quality material MADE IN AMERICA items such as cables, cables are a consumable that will keep being bought.. Pick three styles of amp, and buid them, build them well. A . 100-200w HG Metal SS with existing tech.. reface it.. with the expanded metal grill face , make some colors, and LED internal lighting.. nothing special, just the standard issue features, that every aspiring metal head needs on stage.. IT BETTER WORK.. LIKE AN ARMY TRUCK.. solid brick power and sound.. with the correct amount of gain circuitry for any ganre.. MARKET IT AS SUCH.. a steel brick of metal.. (SS tech is light weight except for the transformer, so that better be hefty) B. Use the tone and circuitry you paid for , and get it written into plug ins, and own the trade and copy rights on them.. you own the sound signature of every frickin amp you've ever made.. sell them in digital format, with your facial and design features from every era.. from beginning to end.. every amp, every cabinet, and every preamp.. in a preamp digital plugin. (consider genre packages, try to seperate what works for each individual genre.. from blues, and jazz, to country and blues rock, to metal.. and or a FULL COLLECTION PACKAGE) DO NOT SEPERATE ROCK, FROM METAL.. you can include country and rock together, but the seperate package is [rock to the heaviest of metal] Consider reissuing the RG13 no changes.. as is.. reissue.. no new branding, no new gadgets, no new paint scheme.. just resurect it, and put them on every shelf in every music store.. at leaste one, as a demo, and one for sale.. Remember, we are living in the digital age now.. the RG13 is very close to the digital stage gigging equipment.. its light weight, sell a case for it, OR.. design the pedal to have an intergrated case cover.. folds up like a brief case, and has its own power supply.. that fits in the case closed. Your boost pedal is fine.. keep it the face punch is not so good.. it sells to 15 year olds with no money.. Make those 15 year olds get serious, and buy that 100w metal half stack with the gain from hell, that comes in diferent expanded metal grill schemes and has the LED internal lighting (w on/off button) The rx model is a bust.. everyone is disappointed, even the church musicians.. why did you waste money buiding it.. The rg100 with a clean face like the thrasher tube amp, is actually what you should be marketing it as.. same face, no thrasher name.. THATS YOUR BOO TEEK FACE.. the thrasher grill and face is your booteek face.. that will fit in any forum and have style and class.. make it solid state.. Literally.. youve got way too much money invested in all these diferent "styles" of amps.. trying to please too many people.. Takr the thrasher chassis, and throw the RG100, or the RG 3003 SS in it.. give people a clean sound, they can work with, and a couple of gain channels to play with.. Everyone likes distortion, but they like it in diferent modes and volumes.. But the image of the product needs to be able to wear a suit and tie.. or strip that tuxedo off and slam something across the room.. The small package tube amps, are not helping you.. You could indeed make a new product in a micro amp.. you have the gain circuitry.. its a micro amp.. doesnt need power. just like the RG13.. 1.7 watts @ 8 ohms, is perfect.. but make that micro amp crunch, and scream like the big boys.. you knkw how to do it.. people are not expecting booteek sound out of a micro amp.. they just want the capability to play literally anywhere, and maybe stack it into a power amp.. like a preamp pedal would.. (line out to amp face) infact, it could actually be the rg13 peramp micro.. , replace one of the gains with a clean.. call it the randall RG12.. 1 watt 2 channels micro amp / pre amp. take a look at the mini marshal, and like minded micro amps.. i think black star has one out too.. $100 USD range.. must be competitive on the market.. Your brand is known for gain circuitry.. sell that in everything you do.. except the clear cut booteek faced (thrasher face) chassis.. it needs to be sold amd marketed as the clean and hansome shape shifter.. Dr. jeckle in a tuxedo outside, but brutal monster on the inside..(1 clean w/shared EQ 2. RG gain circuit.. 2 channel tops) Get you brand standing again.. You must figure out a way, to go digital.. dudes are spending a grand on digital modeling pedals, and hooking into whatevers laying around now.. even house sound.. they dont want to lug a round 80 piund tube heads, and 100 pound 4×12 cabs anymore.. thats for the young guys.. If you have to break down the peoduction of amplifiers, and go to digital hardware.. its ok (for now) You have a name, and you have a sound... sell it in what ever package you have to.. Speaker cabs, and full size heads cost money to manufacture.. cut your costs a littel, and build pedals, GOOD pedals.. that hold up to your name sake.. and if at all possible.. build them here.. have the componants shipped here, and build them here.. so you can put that BUILT IN THE USA stamp on it!

Personally I think Boss will be the one to rule em all. Most younger players (such as me) want something thats basically as utilitarian as possible. The Katana is a Head that’s stupidly affordable yet still sounds amazing when dialed in properly.

Great video, following market trends and such would certainly benefit the brands. Smaller, compact rigs with usable tones for example. (Not that there’s no usecase for tube amps/heads), more just what the current climate is at the moment. But amps like say the Boss Katana seem to have a healthy presence and combination setups/pedal platform setups like a floor modeller with an Orange pedal baby per say would appear to also have a good standing currently. Or say even the Revv D20 with a torpedo built in. I guess maybe instead of just releasing bare bones amplifiers, these new hybrid style amps or amps with multiple features built in for actual real use would be a viable direction. Personally I’m still sold on the Boss tube amp expander, perfect studio and live use. Throw a preamp or modeller in front and call it a day and live it won’t destroy your spine. Then go record a bunch of awesome tunes at home with it using your heavy brick of a tube amp head and if you’re not satisfied with the tone, reamp it with another head and another and so on using the tube expander. Or take your tiny little fender 15 watt fender amp and inject it with the Boss 100 watt power amp and annhilate your drummer with the expander. Just because you can. I could be wrong but the tube amp expander embodies what the current market trend is, a feature loaded piece of gear that has vast real world usage for modern and classic players. I’ve considered a torpedo live and then the captor as a cheaper route, was never interested in the ox box but I’m definitely saving for the tube expander. It’d be nice to use my amp heads again without having to setup cabs and mics and record silently. Dude, I could so talk your ear off about gear, I’ve always known what my dream amp would be if I could choose the features that would go into it from scratch.

They need to go back to the styles and sounds from when dimebag was using them they should have stuck with their signature sound from that era
