I’m turboing my Rover! Unboxing the Maxpedingrods kit
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
My old favourite Rover Tomcat 220 Coupe needs a new head gasket (No, it's NOT a K Series...) but that gives me the chance to make a big upgrade - turbo!

Matt you're quickly becoming the British equivalent to Jay Leno's garage, but on a shoe string, which makes the channel much more down to earth and compelling viewing. Keep it up.

As someone who looked deeply into turbocharging a naturally aspirated T16 a few years back, I can't see this project ending well, particularly with a turbo that size! I'd either leave it as is, or source a complete T16 turbo lump to drop in (as I ended up doing!) But, that said, good luck with it and I will watch with interest!

It does seem like reinventing the wheel and making it square. I can see mega squirt or something else needed to make this run well too which would be a fun project I suppose.

Looking forward to this but I think it maybe easier if you found the factory or close to factory parts for the 220 perhaps an OEM plus build and keep the massive aftermarket turbo for the Volvo
As many others have alreadiy said, to do aftermarket turbocharging right that really works well, can take quite a lot of work. There are often substantial differences between the turbocharged vs the normal variant, not just the turbo. Different compression, internal engine oil cooling, different pistons, conrods, gaskets and camshafts for example are common internal stuff on top of all the external. That being said; Good luck, it might be very cool!

This! I remember some random idiot buying a non turbo 1.8lt. 406 saloon. He strapped a turbo to it thinking the engine in his was the same as the 1.8lt Turbo sport model. The engine grenaded internally very soon afterwards. We warned him. He didn't listen.
My personal advice regarding turbocharging the Tomcat is at least get the cylinder head trued up and even the block face checked for distortion.....however the engine should be fully and professionally rebuilt before turbocharging it . The other considerations are an ignition re map and possibly different fuel injectors in case of high speed detonation. You might even need to use the new GF6A oils which are specifically designed for use in GDI turbocharged engines . I don't want to sound negative but I think those factors should be taking into consideration. Wishing you all the success in your endeavours on your projects Your channel is fantastic 👏 👌

As it seems, it still have the points iginition, and combined with the the CR around 10:1 , i suspect at least some detonation. Matt, you should consider electronic ignition, and low CR pistons.
I would repair the Tom cat and leave it n/a The volvo is the car to go aftermarket turbo with. As you said a strong engine, loads of room under the bonnet, and rwd.👍
There is a place for turbo kits and dump valves - it is called a council estate! Honestly I just dont see the point of messing up a rare classic unless you want a track day car.
Volvo conversion would be more interesting. Get a second hand factory turbo set up for the Tomcat, or keep it as is.
i recently discovered your channel and since watched as many videos as i can, love your work!

Thank you!
I've got the same T04e turbo fitted on my Lexus IS200 2.0. It has a bit of turbo lag (boost kicking in between 3.5/4k rpm, redline at 6.5k) however the power it delivers is really awesome. The boost kick in acceleration has transformed the car, being around 153bhp standard i'd estimate mine to be around 220/230bhp. Deffo worth doing!
Really looking forward to following the turbo project. A before and after dyno test would be good. Brilliant content, keep up the great work!
WOW 😮 and I thought I was lucky getting 2 pairs of thermo socks for Christmas ☹️ what a lucky boy you are Matt and who wouldn’t want a Turbo Kit gift 🎁. I can see you now at traffic lights , baseball cap backwards , black menacing leather jacket reliving your youth and burning up the streets scaring little old ladies 😂 can’t wait .
Wow! That's exciting news and can't wait to see how the project turns out.
Got to go with the turbo Volvo idea Matt. Would be something really different. Very pleased to see how your channel has gained popularity. Have been subbed since the Fiesta XR2i vid back in 2019! Keep up the good work mate
Matt I adore your videos mate I sincerely do. Actually I find myself getting quite eggy if I’m not able to view them instantly due to work or other life’s irritations. I subscribe to endless channels but none of them come close to what u manage to achieve simply by being yourself, perfectly executed every single time. Looking forward to the completion of the Mondeo with hopefully similar videos to come. Great idea with the rover too. ❤
Another exciting little project on the go Matt, looking forward to seeing how this progresses, I reckon this will be a riot once the turbo is on.
Hello Matt. @10:40, that is a wastegate. It's basically a valve which diverts exhaust gas away from the turbine so that you can hold a set boost pressure. Other parts you'll need to support the setup would be a mappable ECU, I don't know if there are plug and play solutions for Rover, but companies like Haltech do good engine management systems. Wideband sensor (which the engine management system would use too) with a gauge to monitor the air fuel ratio, also will need a set of higher capacity injectors so that a safe AFR can be maintained. All looks very exciting 👍.
I used to have a Punto GT and that turbo sound is quite addictive!! good luck with the project Matt it'll be interesting to see how the kit goes together 😊
Content just lately is becoming top notch. Keep it up and Merry Xmas.
Really looking forward to this love the tomcat and my fave engine configuration is a 2l turbo
Yes yes and yes! I knew driving the 420 gsi turbo would sway you to turbo the Tomcat. I'm doing something a bit different with my vvc coupe and dropping a 1.8 k series turbo into it, should be an interesting comparison when they're both finished 🤔
Hi Matt. I’ve had a 220 gsi turbo since 2010 and have an original manifold, turbo (t25) and even an entire engine (needs a rebuild but was running when I removed it) Happy to help if you need any parts. There are only 5-6 on the road now. Ideally you need the 220 turbo ecu. I even have a turbo radiator that needs a recore. It won’t end well adding a turbo the the nasp engine.
Exciting! This is going to be another great series. 👍
Looking forward to seeing this progress
Love the videos Matt, cant wait to start working on a car of my own!
This channel is getting better and better I've been watching for ages and really enjoyed it. Looks like the second value is external gate
Dan at KBL tuning in Dudley is a t16 wizard and he might have manifolds as he has most things available for these. Also a great person to talk to about mapping your ecu when you stick your turbo on 👍🏻
Yay...can't wait!
Ooooooh man, I can not wait for this! So much excitement for the viewer.
Exciting project, let the winter start! 😃🔥
The T series cracking engine I did think about turboing my 820 Si but had to sell it due to lack of space. Be nice to see this project come along.👌👍
Another exiting project you are excelling yourself matt 😊
The Tomcat gets a snail. Cool. Glad to hear you're keeping the Mini as an auto, it's history is too interesting to mod it. Nice one.
I just love Matt for being a regular guy, so many of us can relate to him!
Really looking forward to this your tomcat is my favourite car you have I'd love to own one
I owned a Tomcat Turbo back in the day. Went like stink but, oh my word, the torque steer.....Seemed like the cars underpinnings just couldn`t handle the 197 horses all at once! Looking forward to this one...Good luck.
Great Turbo Kit!Looking foward to seeing you put it on either the Rover or Volvo.
I think you should turbo the volvo and leave the coupe as it, once you've completed the headgasket it should go back to being reliable, That turbo looks enormous (lag central 🙂) Still your cars and your choice. Good luck
Wow this is an unexpected as the Mondeo! Can’t wait to see this! My friend had a Tomcat turbo back in the day and it was fantastic! Brilliant project ahead Matt! One question - how do you get on with regards to compression ratios in the engine? Is the kit designed to work with the existing CR or do you fit a thicker headgasket to reduce the CR?
My first car was a 89 auto mini. Even though people shy from them or just plain dislike them at shows and events people was genuinely surprised that it was an auto. It's good news to hear you're keeping it ALL orignal and as is :)
Christmas has come early at Furious Driving! This is great extension to your usual excellent content - performance modification. The turbo Volvo Estate….oh that’s an idea, as is dropping it into the R8 estate? Fun times ahead 😊
Can't wait to see the mods on the Rover ,
I’m a newbie from the mondaeo and this also looks like a good watch 👌
This is is going to be a great one
I watched to the end then you chucked in the Volvo scenario, a Turbo 740 sleeper, now that would be very interesting.
I love that Volvo mechanics coat. It reminds me of my childhood visits to Pilling Volvo Milton Keynes with my Dad and his 740s!
I have seen cars go up in flames after they've been retrofitted with a turbo, turbocharging makes the exhaust glow red hot. I know a turbocharged engine was available for the Volvo 740 (B230FT), but that came with a different cilinder head than the normally aspirated engines and you needed to be careful with the gearbox. Though I believe your 740 already has the later M47 5-speed gearbox. in which case you just need to watch the gearbox oil level. How well the Rover engine will respond to turbocharging, I honestly don't know, but given the cramped engine bay, I would expect cooling issues. It would surely give interesting videos, but I'd rather see you and your fleet stay in one piece. 😅
Great to see the Tomcat getting some love. It is still one of my top 3 cars on your fleet and I love its status as the lifeboat car too. Intrigued to see where this goes

Me too...if it's ever possible! If not the Volvo gets to go fast and make psssht shooop noises
The Rover Tomcat is a fun car to drive and I’m interested to see the end result.
Think the better way would be to drop in an original turbo engine. Surely a straight fit. The aftermarket kits gunna need all sorts of tweaking to run right to match the hardware. I wouldnt expect to make the the same 197 as the original turbo rovers. Either way its good content.
Every Rover I have ever owned all blew head gaskets, usually putting exhaust into the water system. I think you need to get new head bolts as they stretch on removal, and probably need the head skimmed too...My favourite was a 216 Vitesse EFI, can't remember if it was the one with a Honda engine. I loved it but it just rotted away in front of your eyes......lol. You can buy fake dump valve boxes, they make the noise via a speaker and a micro switch attached somewhere.....probably a lot cheaper too.......lol
Good luck with the rover
Another project! Respect! I have just one car as a project and I can't be arsed with that 99% of the time , so kudos to you Matt. I have to say, I appreciate your thoughts on it but a turbo 400 Tourer would be amazing
Torque steer central 😂, I seem to remember the scribes of the day saying about the turbo not getting its power down 😂, but I cannot wait to see this project get started 👍 Many interesting projects on the go 👍, love the content 👍
Turbocharging the gsi estate would be a brilliant idea. If you do yours and it works ok I will do the same to my 420 gsi estate...
Great to see an increase in subscribers. Might be able to fund an extra pair of hands to get some projects across the line
Yes! Yes! Yes! Turbo Rover!!
Love these cars a friend had a turbo years ago great car and very fast , he had a MK2 MR2 he swapped for her best decision
Very exciting! Whichever car you choose to boost, I will be eagerly watching along. I recently turbocharged my own N/A car on a budget, so I'm really interested to see how this goes :)
Oooo this is going to be good.
I put a MaXpeedingRods turbo core into the original Garrett housings on my 1.6HDi Pug 308 with VGT, honestly couldn't tell the difference between the original and the aftermarket, fantastic quality as well for the price! Unfortunately that engine had deeper issues, so I sold it.
Turbo the Volvo! I owned a 940 Wentworth and it was a tremendous car! Keep the Tomcat as origional spec engine....it's rare. Peace Charlie 🇬🇧

So is the Volvo! I’d send the turbo off to Auto Alex, to use on one of his cars………….as he’s in the process of wrecking a mint Jag XJ8!
Hello Matt, have you got the Haynes manual for the Mondeo yet? On the subject of the turbo, I would say; do a lot of homework. Have a look at other KZreadrs like Tavarish, B is for Build, Driving 4 answers (the latter has a full master class on boosting). Watching these, you will see the minefield they enter when they get into turbos. They have bigger workshops and more tools and experts at hand. They get into trouble. Given what I see of your talents, I would have gone for supercharging instead. Less pipe to fix together and less risk of shattering turbo impellers with dirt from the exhaust. Everything has to be so clean. That is as much I understand.
Because there is very much a sweet spot for the power an R8 chassis can deal with (which arguably a standard Tomcat turbo exceeds), along with the gearbox weakness, I'd do as many others have suggested & fit the snail to the Volvo. Turbo manifolds should be available for that engine, as should LSD's
I look forward to more 740 content in the future. For now, though, it seems quite happy resting in the barn :)
Got the feeling a smaller fleet might be better so you can work indoors and concentrate on saving cars by flipping classic and modern classics. These diesel heaters used in motorhomes are getting popular to heat garages using red diesel.

Wise move indoors, Matt. I was afraid you were going to get frostbite! Turbo looks like a great project.
The bit you were questioning “valve” is the wastegate 😂 be interesting to see this build take place
Will you need to upgrade injectors and the ECU? Look forward to seeing you getting this running. Volvo sleeper would be fun...probably even more fun trying to keep it on the road without serious suspension and brake work! 😂
Wow Matt, I hope you do the same to the 420 GSi Tourer, what an under the radar car that would be.

That Volvo is lovely, I wouldn't sell it either, very nice indeed!
So wish I had your 740.its identical to mine which got burned out in 2012.
Did you get a new more powerful petrol pump for the fuel tank you will need more fuel for the turbo and more air flow you may have to get a new air filter system,I am so looking forward for this project this is going to be the best project ever as you said its nearly there just a few bits and that's a big turbo mat wow cant wait can't wait to hear the boost dump valve 😃🤪😃🤪😃😄 I feel all giddy and happy for you I wish i was there to helo you.. HAPPY Christmas and new year mat 🎄☃️🎅🤶🇬🇧❄️.
Hi matt I had a few Coupes Turbos and vvc the best mods I've done is battery in the boot and strut brays front and back big brakes you nd them with that turbo..lol
Matt, turbo the tomcat! The DOHC 16v should make it a beast. I had an early '83 760 turbo and that motor is thoroughly different with fully forged internals. Your 740 is non turbo to start with and probably a b230 that came after 85 which has reduced weight tiny internals.
Love the Tomkat but would be more interested to see the turbo go on the Volvo to see what difference the extra power makes. Whatever you do good luck, enjoying your videos :)
Christmas came early then !!!!!
Damn thats a big turbo. Thats for a 350bhp + application. Your going to need aftermarket injectors and a new modern standalone ECU system to map the engine to suit that airflow. (I map/tune engines for a living). I dont know much about that Rover engine myself, but im guessing as a non-turbo engine with no strengthening mods, you are going to be limited to 240bhp or so.
Did not come with instructions then. Sure can be found online and some of your followers would know how to assemble and shoehorn it all in. Don't forget to inform insurance company when done unless an any vehicle policy then it's just a courtesy. Oh and the brakes are up to the job with all the extra power. That's something many forget when 'souping up' a car.
you should definately get the tomcat dyno'd before and after installing the turbo to see the horsepower, would make for great content!
This will be a proper cool car when its done.
Matt has switched to the otherside. you might want to look at the piston rings and rod bearings too (depending on the history of the car, it may have been overbuilt from the factory ofc)
The Tomcat will scare the pants off you with a turbo fitted. My best mate at the time was on the design team for it, more years ago than I care to remember.
u have gotta lot of work ahead of u for that rover Matt.
How many miles has this 220 engine on it?
I'm gonna be interested in how a universal turbo kit fits. So depending how you get on, will answer if I buy a kit or not. Good luck!
Can hear and bang coming soon 😂😂😂
Would love to see the turbo on the Volvo, maybe some period correct alloy wheels and a slight tickle with the lowering stick. Can all be reversible should you wish.
Don't do it - leave it as it is! That turbo looks about twice the size of the standard one and will probably, at best, blow the head gasket, but more than likely destroy the rest of the engine, taking the gearbox with it!. It's only going to get rarer and I think it would be a shame to modify it that much, especially as the 220 turbo Coupe already exists
He makes me laugh what he dose funny and good channel
Turbo everything 😁
The Rover content is great, You very rarely see rovers these days especially the ones on your channel.
Another good video 🚗🚙🚘⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍
Had 945's, great cars to haul stuff but so underpowered, turbo on the 7 might be a good idea. Let's face it, it can't do any worse to the gallon 😁 You're gonna Ng to need a bigger barn or you could buy a static caravan for the drive and convert the house into garage and storage space...wounded how that would go down with Mrs Furious 🤔.
What the plan on the management side of things to run turbo over the na? Also for turbo you really need to lower the compression of the engine either by decomp plate (basically 2 head gaskets) or run the low comp turbo pistons.
Question: Is there no remapped ECU with the kit? It may not run very well without those changes.
All this prevarication holds up the Rover P6 V8 🙂
Think flipping them fast seems more interesting like you intend with the Mondeo
That turbo looks bigger than the one on my lorry 😂 The Volvo engine got more chance of staying in one piece if you fit that turbo to it. I’m afraid i can only see the rover engine 💩ing itself if you fit it to that. You got so much on i don’t know who’s worse you or hubnut 🤔 All good content and entertainment to watch 👍
