To fight being terminally online, I've been carrying a small pocket notebook. Whenever I want to check my phone to distract myself, I grab the notebook instead. I write down thoughts and observations, or read what I wrote before. It's great!

I've been doing this for a couple years now. It's helps, a lot. Not an easy habit, surprisingly. I started by using it as a daily, weekly, and monthly planner, and then using the rest of the pages on between for thoughts. It helps using a NICE pocket notebook. Personally, I use the Traveler's passport sized notebook. It's so perfect. Also helps having a nice pencil. Personally, I use 0.9mm lead mechanical pencils, love me some thicc lead. Best of luck y'all ✌️

News can be read on Reddit, or any news channels from your country here on YT, and that would only take you for about an hour (or less) to stay up to date with what happened. You're seriously not missing out on anything.

Here is a list of things that are not doing the thing. “Preparing to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Scheduling time to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Making a to-do list for the thing isn't doing the thing. Telling people you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Messaging friends who may or may not be doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Writing a banger tweet about how you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on yourself for not doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on other people who have done the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on the obstacles in the way of doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Fantasising about all of the adoration you'll receive once you do the thing isn't doing the thing. Reading about how to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Reading about how other people did the thing isn't doing the thing. Reading this essay isn't doing the thing. The only thing that is doing the thing is doing the thing.” - Strangest Loop

People are lost, they need purpose and contentment to actually work. This is the truth that everyone needs to know that purpose is what you are lacking. Find a purpose and it will fill you and you will be able to actually work and get into action. Tips and advices are not going to help if you don't have a purpose, do's and don't's and instructions will not help if you lack a purpose.

So that's a goal you might wrap your head around. How do you create that? I guess you start with making sure your mind is healthy and after that you might wanna make others feel a little better being kind, patient, positive, encouraging and just listening to them with attention. That's something already, after that you might wanna look for something else that suits your skills and interests.

@@gibwolf8515 I will assume that you look what actually makes you feel like you wanna live this life. What gives you meaning and contentment. What makes life in your eyes worth to live. I'm pretty sure that there are certain moments in your life where you were invested in something and it gave you purpose and meaning, try to join the dots of those moments, Maybe these moments are the meanings of life that you are meant to live for. You will make a hole overview out of it, and then just stick to it. Personally I find my purpose through religion. I'm a Muslim so I have a holistic overview of the world and I wake up everyday with a goal set and a purpose that ive received within my religion and it always gave me happiness and meaning and kept it moving and pushed me to work and get into life in real invest. But I still think that people can find their own purpose too in other ways. but please look for it, living without a purpose and a meaning means slowly killing yourself and putting yourself into a mental health crisis. I would say that the biggest cure against mental health issues like depression is an actual purpose to live by.

A couple years ago, you made a video about how to stop procrastinating. The first (?) suggestion you gave was to eat the frog, and that has resonated me so consistently ever since that moment. Sometimes all it takes is someone saying the same thing you've always known in the right way to get yourself off your butt and actually do it. That same exact day, i decided I wanted a TV in my room so I could play my Switch at night without disturbing anyone. I started the long process of cleaning my entire room. It had been building up in crap for over 10 years, and i could only access my bed through the path i carved through the knee high piles of old papers, old toys, and literal, actual trash. I was raised in a home where this was normal, so i never thought anything of it. Roughly two years later, i have my own computer, half of my closet is dedicated to my new hobby of painting, and I am doing everything I can to get my entire family to start the process of making the house better. It really does only start when it starts, and while i recognize that your words kicked my ass into gear, it wasn't because they were some unforeseen truth of the universe, it was because they were the truth I had always known.

This is pretty much exactly what’s been going through my mind lately and I even made a mental note of this today. My new ways of my procrastinating have taken a slightly more socially acceptable turn; obsessing over other mundane things like cleaning or organizing or doing “executive tasks, always ruminating and feeling overwhelmed almost 24/7 how much needs to be done, keep daydreaming new ideas or putting off the real creative projects I’d like to start. I have so many ideas and interests, it’s hard to stay on one task or focus on one thing. I think I’ve created this mental block where I convince myself that doing anything else outside of my comfort zone is a “waste of time”. I’m so hooked to my phone and although I try to convince myself that most of my phone usage is me learning new things, researching, etc it’s really just completely hindering me and overloading me with mostly useless information. I end up feeling burnt out and completely scattered and the only thing I feel capable of doing at that point is doomscrolling. Then the cycle continues. I’ve been telling myself I need better habits for months and I’ve felt stuck for awhile. I think this is my sign I need to get a solid grip before my life truly passes me by. The reality is, there will never be enough time for other pursuits if you dont make enough time for it or truly prioritize it. The scarier it is the more intimidating it is to just start somewhere. I don’t need anymore tools or advice, I just need to show up for myself.

Loved this, I recommend watching DrK's breakdown of something similar where he describes how we change, in a titled "I Watch Your Videos But Never Change My Life". When we just over consume and don't spend time to reflect on what we just consumed, the next video starts to overwrite the previous one, he described it as chain watching. The act of reflecting is the action we can take while technically doing 'nothing', however the behavior change happens only after this, not before. Being chronically online definitely is the worst thing to happen personally in my lifetime, completely eliminating the 'need' to find relationships in real life. Now that I'm trying to flip it around on it's head, it's a lot more uphill than I realized. I decided to join a run club recently to just get out and meet new people and experiences, and it's been SO refreshing to just connect with others in person. Thanks for your videos :)

There’s a quote (I forget by whom): “I’ve made myself rich by making my wants few.” I feel that’s a good expression on what gratitude does for oneself. Joey, I'm so glad you spoke about this. I was thinking the exact same thing last week. I am looking for a job and I'm moving provinces. I have a lot to do and I have me, myself & I to help me with everything! When I sit on my phone for 3 hours, I panic because I'm not doing the things I need to get done. Then I get anxious, the overwhelm hits me, then it's analysis paralysis. Literally 5 minutes into sending out resumes, packing a box, going for a power walk or doing strength training....I feel completely different! I feel like I'm getting ahead. I'm accomplishing things that I need to get done. My head feels awake and clear. I'm being healthy in my mind & body. Bottom line, I am respecting myself and my life. I am a chronic self-help seeker. Books, videos, articles, podcasts, and the list goes on. This has had me thinking of a very good analogy. It's like going for Driver's Ed . Yes we sit in class (Is that still done today? 😅) learning theories and everything about driving. But then, we need to do the practical side. Actually getting into the car & driving it. This is the exact same thing. A huge amount of changes I have seen in the last 2 - 3 decades in our world are not only frightening; they are dangerous and ruin millions of lives. We all just need to get up off our a**es, put one foot in front of the other, and do what we can to be healthy in mind & body, create the life we want.....and be there for one another. That actually IS the reason why we're all here. To help our fellow brother or sister 🙏

You held me in suspense until 4:35 when you said you weren’t going to stop making videos 😅 really, I’m happy that you’re recovering from illness and getting a fresh start on things. I wish you the best with being MORE in the world. I agree that we are in general chronically online, and there have been lots of people talking out about the toxicity of “self improvement” culture. It’s easy to get a small sense of accomplishment by consuming the self improvement content rather than actually improving and that can be a bad feedback loop for some. However, stumbling into your videos last fall when I was spiraling in life and watching KZread chronically was a game changer for me. I didn’t immediately start doing things. I didn’t immediately start producing more than I consume. But each video I watched planted a new seed in my mind for the right ideas to grow. Over the winter I began to apply little bits here and there and my life looks vastly different from before because I gradually compounded my little successes to get where I am. I think this kind of content is exactly what’s needed today. People ARE chronically online, and they NEED to get out into the world and be a doer, but that’s not going to happen if all that hits their feed is cat videos. Your “better ideas” made me think critically about my own life and realize that I wanted it to be different, and it made me realize it COULD be different. I hope you never feel like your work falls on deaf ears or contributes to the chronically online problem because you have definitely been a catalyst for change in my life.

Something you said in a past video that still resonates with me is "Inaction is a slow death." I personally try to live that out, but have been stuck by looking for the perfect "Golden nuggets" of information on the internet to propell me forward, and only up till recently I've been implementing action based living. I've been messing up, and learning but I think that's the beauty of the human experience.

I found your channel a few months ago while in the midst of a very long rut. I was inspired to start implementing some of your tips. It was slow going, and if I'm being honest, through the ebb and flow of my journey I kind of forgot about the channel. The algorithm must have noticed something because your videos are being suggested to me again. I'm happy to say my outlook on life has completely changed. I was a suicidal agoraphobic addict with zero hope of returning to my place in the world for years. But the incremental changes that your content inspired have yielded impossible results. I'm getting out of the house, reading books again, reconnecting with friends, getting control of my health, and in the fall I'm going back to school to study my passion, human nutrition. Thank you for your channel. You deserve all the success you can possibly achieve because you are changing the world.

Yo. Thanks for the update mate. As a thought to share back. I'm a medical professional who teaches at libraries and other venues. I found myself feeling...pressured. Weighted. Like doing the same work but wearing gloves while typing, or running through water. I'd been teaching topics for awhile and...I'd run out of things I was excited and bursting to teach, and was scrambling to put more together...but over time...I didn't really want to go through all that every single month, with the new weight. I didn't feel I could reteach the same things, but I also was finding it harder, not to invent a new topic, but to get myself to be willing to go through the find-vet-make process. And making it amusing enough for the public, since I am billed as 'the entertaining health doc'. Can't be boring. Well...I found three things out 1) I COULD rotate in old stuff. 2/3 old, 1/3 new. I just add in new micro topics and we are good. This may not apply to you, but my audience changes over time. Some find me later, some miss things, and the of few who are neither I've had them comment that hearing it again was helpful anyway. It's okay to repeat things. The scriptures of any religion repeat things. So does scientific literature. Take your pick. It's allowed, and it works. 2) This one was big. I needed to swap things up, because *I* wasn't interested enough anymore. You know that "replaceable parts" was a big innovation? Before then, all parts were custom made, and if one broke, you custom made one to fit. In comes replaceable parts. Everything plays well with each other, and you can mix and match. You see...I started to use my presentation research like replaceable parts. I research for the presentation (one use), I record it (two uses), I write my notes in book format with citations, that with a few pictures and tweaks is 85% ready to print (three uses), and I am now trying to make quicksheets as either monographs/health guide handouts/clinic references summarizing Action Points, depending on what kind of topic I'm covering (four uses). And so on. 3) I took a break and had other ways to offer my knowledge/ply my craft. I don't have to rely on my presentations now. I also run a clinic. And have non-entertaining classes (we still have fun, but no pressure to dig up amusing stories and *entertain*) to break up the type of work. I took a month off of the fun-teaching and...I lived. I cut 2.5 of my 7 monthly venues, and shifted focus to making it sustainable. And I'm happy with it right now. If I need a break from one, I'll lean into another. KZread is an attention engine, but maybe you can find a shift. Also, some KZreadrs upload once a year (Captain Disillusion, or CG Gray, for example). I don't know your answer, but for my ADHD self, these were great. Being able to half the new material prep and stabilize it with old material. Deliberately finding how to make the same research/prep work make multiple useful "tools". And to be able to 'run' to another type/area of my work, doing tool-assissted minimums and maybe a break on the one that got stale... all really helped. Anyhow, this is written as a thank you for your channel, and some raw material on the off chance it helps you, or anyone, finding what works best in your life. My shower thoughts. Stay solid mate, Taylor- PS: Saved in my Advice Given folder so I don't have to write from scratch next time a pre-med student asks about burnout. #2.

it's also important to remember that things change over time, so repeating old material isn't exclusively a negative. It's probably had changes in it over time. Also on point 2, that's not explicitly true, it's true that a lot of things were custom made, but they were ALSO built to be serviced, a pipe flange between two surfaces? That was designed to be honed down again, repeatedly, it's serviceable material. Not just throw it away, make a new one. If it was completely bunked you would often make a new part, but usually these parts were pretty simple, so it's not like it was incredibly hard.

Your ideas and perspective have helped me in really big ways. It wasn’t only thanks to your ideas but partially- in the past few years I started going to church again (converted to a new one that was a long time in the making) met my husband there, got married, became infinitely more productive and resolved a lot of nagging personal insufficiencies and about 6 weeks ago I got a personal trainer and work out almost every day to finally take care of my body and resolve insecurities I have struggled with since I was like 14 years old. I realized that not resolving the issues that made me unhappy was the cause of my anxiety and I had to cultivate the skill of discipline. I need to always be on an upward trajectory making progress improving myself in some way even if it is very small and not something anyone else will notice. I do need to spend less time watching KZread still but I have cut down and am commenting this from a treadmill at the gym, which I have been on for the past 58 minutes. Relying excessively on self-improvement videos and external resources has become a concern. Instead of taking action, we often seek shortcuts, but the reality is that there are no easy paths to improvement. Progress requires setting goals, devising plans, and executing them. Without taking action, no improvement can occur.

This video is so on point with where I am and feel like in my life right now. I am struggling for years with this kind of life, where everything I am doing seems to be an abstract thing, happening only somewhere in the digital space and not in front of me. Although I can and I am working on doing as much things as I can offline, in the real world, and occupy my free time with doing actual and tangible stuff that gives me with a massive sense of fulfilment and accomplishment, what kills me the most is the fact that I am working in an environment where I am not creating anything, I am not manipulating something and transform it into something better - do something real I can see and use - to put it simply. Please do a video on this topic. There are millions of people out there really unhappy because of this reason and most of them are not aware of it. They blame it on a bunch of other things (partner, parents, friends, bosses, life, etc.) but they miss this huge thing that they are just existing out there and struggle because what they're doing everyday is not giving in return any palpable results (yeah, a financial income will not fulfill this need and you all know it already). I am certain of this because whenever I do a something with a clear purpose that would give me in return a tangible result, I get a huge boost in my mood and motivation, compared to my dull everyday job, where I would just work like souless corpse for doing stuff that simply gets lost in a grand scheme of things (you can call it a database if you wan to). And I know for a fact that I am not the only struggling with this.

All good wishes to you in your new crib, Joey - sweet dreams! As to my go-to way of safeguarding my mental health, it's this: Get out of bed. Feed and groom the cat. Pick her poops out of the litter box. Feed the birds and fill the birdbath. Back indoors, open the bedroom windows unless it's blowing a gale (yes, even in the winter) strip the bedclothes to expose the bottom sheet, put the pillows out on the balcony to catch the wind, make coffee. Drink, rinse, repeat. Sometimes I do the crossword puzzle online, sometimes not. Eight incredible things before breakfast! :D But wait, there's more! I always have a running list of stuff to do - the laundromat trip, the grocery shopping, the library, the post office (I have a box). Housewifery, cooking, baking, small repairs and fixes around the house. Chatting with the cat. I, too, have an online presence, although it's just my Facebook page. I make all my posts public, however, and try to curate it so it's fun for anyone who drops by to scroll through. There are recipes and food porn, book recommendations and reviews, personal essays, music links and videos, and links to things I think might be of use to others - like your Better Ideas! :D I post lectures by scholars that I find of interest, travelogues, and posts about history, anthropology, art, science, philosophy, and nature. I post photos. I'm your one-stop Facebook shop for all things fun, hopeful, happy, and wise. :D (I'm not wise, but I can take you there.)
