$13k??? I haven’t spent that much on my 3 Land Cruisers over a total of 37 years of ownership. Always at the dealer. You got seriously taken to the cleaners. My 200 has a lot more miles and I would drive to Panama tomorrow. You should be able to park it all winter with no issues. I have a 1998 LC 100 with over 460 k miles. It sits all winter under a pile of snow less than 100 feet from the North Pacific Ocean. It is hooked up to a trickle charger. When I show up back in Alaska in May I’m confident it will fire right up like it always has. While I am there my 200 will sit all summer in Seattle and I know it will start.

So by buying this, its automatically going to be reliable?
That salty ocean air is not good for a Japanese alternator that sat for months at a time. I had a perfectly good alternator go out on me in my Honda after sitting for over a year in my yard, and I'm no where near the ocean. I'm not surprised at all Doug had this problem.
Doug, I have a 2008 Land Cruiser. Had the same failures ... starter, radiator crack, and idle pulley tensioner. The starter was my fault. I jumped the battery with the terminals on the wrong polarity and that killed the starter and started a small fire on the battery. Thus far, the water pump is good, but I think my alternator is starting to fail. Last week, the car started very weakly and then not at all. I charged the battery and the car started again. We will see if the alternator charges the battery this week. Also, the low range 4 wheel drive switch ( relay? or something ) is broken. Dealership mechanic told me to just keep in 4 Hi. That repair is quite expensive and I don't go off-road or tow anything with this vehicle. Outside of the starter, all of the failures started last year at around 200K miles. I'm at about 215K miles. I hope to keep this to 300K. Love the vehicle and it has served my family well for over 15 years with little to no problems in -40 Degrees temp in Alaska to 100 degree heat here in the South.

1. Better mechanics over there. 2. Doug's usage of it made it as reliable as a Land Rover on a good day. Any car, even a reputable old Toyota, will have issues if you let it sit for months on a little island in the East Coast. 3. These old Toyotas only really show their reliability if you actually use them everyday and not let it sit on the least ideal conditions. Case in point: Victor Sheppard's One Million-mile Tundra. 4. Doug overestimated the LC's reliability and, like he said in the video, asked too much of it.

255k on my 2000 lx470. Least likely vehicle to leave you stranded. I would have built a heated garage in Nantucket and kept the cruiser. Selling the D90 was a good move. It required much greater maintenance than even a Texas Toyota.
YOU HEAR HIM GUYS. DONT BUY LC200s. Leave them all for me.
Just my two cents, but it sounds like what you needed was a quality alternator, something to keep the elements out of it (WD-40? a small garage?), a good battery, and maybe some Stabil in the gas tank when you park it. Sitting's not good for a vehicle, for sure, but people have all sorts of seasonal vehicles that sit for months (boats, snowmobiles, tractors, summer cars, winter beaters, etc), and if you take a little extra care they'll be fine.
ok, so realistically, except the alternator, that you could put a different - and better one rather than the OEM - nothing actually broke.. all money was spent in changing parts without them actually failing.

While remote diagnostics from a random stranger aren't very useful I would like to say that a trickle charger on the battery might have helped with the alternator issues. With the vehicle sitting for so long the battery gets drained down then the alternator has to work harder to top it back off. For some vehicles you can also buy an oversized alternator to help with that. And I noticed you didn't say you bought a new battery for it, the old one could be failing again taxing the alternator. But I could be completely wrong. Like you said the salt air is hard on a car and could have been causing corrosion to the internals of the alternator which wouldn't be a Land Cruiser specific problem. I believe for your use case that you should just buy a new 3 row SUV every couple of years to keep out there. That's really about the only way you're going to have a "bulletproof" ride out there. Good luck and thanks for the videos!

@@andrewg2618 Absolutely, they need lubrication, otherwise they’ll get oxidation just sitting there.
The idler pulley is something you just do along with the belt tensioner and serpentine belt at 100,000 miles. Not expensive or hard to do maintenance item yourself. Guessing your alternator issues had to do with a chronically undercharged battery combined with what seems like a lot of low speed off-road driving. Would imagine a battery tender and perhaps a high output aftermarket alternator from an off-road specialist company would’ve solved that issue.
Yup used to break down before cell phones and on dirt roads. No one thought it was terribly inconvenient, just bad luck 🍀. Today people expect more, much more 😮

Bro I gotta see what you've planned for the replacement. That rust looks way too much, more than my 14yrs old fortuner has. So your first protective measure should've been rustproofing dercoat. I've driven though a puddle so deep the water flowed higher than the engine hood. No problem there, it took me home just fine. I should've checked the Intake for water accumulation but I didn't. Short story, next day the alternator went out. Cranked it start with a stick, found new alternator from scrapyard, drove around and its all good again. Last month again the damn alternator broke. This time went for an OEM one, lets see how it does. The point of the story is, Alternator is the only thing susceptible to breaking when driving around in water, given you don't breath in the water and bend rods. Putting a snorkel, rustproofing and Alternator maintenance would've done the job. If your new car isnt a newer LC, I beleive there won't be anything that would suit your needs for this purpose.
I was kindda planning to replace my old Land Rover (which seems to be bullet proof, Just did the Budapest Bamako Rally with irt cca 10000miles hard off road) with a 200 series LC, but I was hesitant. Thanks to you, I'll keep my Land Rover forever 🙂

Yeah, the "Toyota reliability" has been a myth for at least the last decade IMO. We had a couple of Toyotas. The water pump eventually went out on both of them and there were other issues here and there. That's why my next car is going to be electric - none of the stuff Doug enumerated even _exists_ in an electric.

My LC had issues also. I fell for the myth.
We, over here in GER, had this type of LC, the LC 200, too. But here in GER and Europe it was only sold as a 4.5l D-4D V8 Diesel with 286hp and 600Nm paired to an 6-speed AT.^^ They're kinda rare to find, compaired to the smaller type LC 150 (also known as 'Prado', in a 3 or 5 door body), because of their 'low' numbers in selling due to their higher price back in the days. We had them from 2008/09 up to 2015 to be availible but ot deleted after that without a replacement from Toyota in its class/segment letting the LC150 be the last availible LC in GER/Europe... But even as used ones they hightly hold their pricetags up and even above 300tsd./km on the clock they go for 30k € plus, mostly to be exported to foreign countries in the East or Africa. To get your hands on a preowned "low" mileage (speaking of from under 100k/km to under 200k/km) and well maintained one these daiys, you have to look out paitiantly and have to calculate from 40k € and up in your pocket. Why? Well, because they're literally 'indistructable' in that config with the 4.5l Diesel and the low level of electrical fancy stuff they had compared to all of todays models and types, letting them run 300-400tsd./km at ease (rigth maintance + a basic care provided, like in all longlasting things^^) and they're the really last BIG Land Cruiser to get your hands on aside the new LC 300, which we haven't/didn't get here.😃🤩❤
I pretty much keep my vehicles until they die. Usually water pumps, starters and alternators die around 120-160k. Sometimes sooner. If I am fixing something on my vehicle and if any of these parts are easy access with a repair I just replace it. I did a timing chain recently on a vr6 on a GTI and replaced the water pump, starter (was making some noise) and the alternator along with a few other parts. I have put over 30k on the vehicle since and have had zero problems. Preventive maintenance of common wear items is better than being left stranded at the side of the road. Also cheaper than a new vehicle.
One thing about alternators is that almost all of them that you can buy are remanufactured units. You probably just had bad luck with the alternator and needed to get it replaced under parts warranty.

Not always. Some cars are just not enjoying being used either. My Suzukis really disliked not being used, but my Toyotas were unreliable being driven or not.
I have a 2008 Lexus LX570 (basically the same vehicle) - approaching 120k miles. Bought it a little over 2 years ago with 89k on it. I really hope I"m not knocking on wood here - but I literally have not done anything to it since we bought it. And I drive it offroad fairly often, I mean some more serious offroading. It's been an amazing experience so far. I came out of a 2008 Toyota Sequoia that I did have to replace the starter and radiator on at one point (yes it's in a tough spot)... But this LX (landcruiser) has been rock solid so far. I'll just do things as they come up... That's the thing with these toyotas. Best not to pre-emptively do literally everything upfront like you would on a GM/Ford etc as it's usually money not well spent. 100k miles is insanely low for all those troubles you have had.... Anyway I plan on owning for another 2 years then upgrading to a 2013+ model. I think the previous ownership experience matters alot too.
Hey Doug. I’m not familiar with these but is the power steering pump above the alternator? If so I’d check if it’s leaking. That could have been the culprit of your alternator troubles. Fluid could have dripped on the alternator
So you only needed an alternator, but got everything else done aswell for more money and that dealership really made you over pay should’ve been 7-8k for all that work lol. And then you got a faulty alternator and are just going to sell it doesn’t make sense. But ok

The fact that the ultra-reliable, never-gonna-let-you-down Land Cruiser has so many potential faults, which hadn't yet occurred on my truck but get a lot of complaints on the forums, suggests that maybe it isn't quite as reliable as people say it is. I had a similar situation with my Lexus ES 330 where the dealer told me my alternator failed since my batteries kept dying frequently. I always took my car to the Lexus dealership. I replaced the alternator and the battery in which a year later after good use of the car, the battery died. The dealer told me again that my alternator might be dead. I went to the local AutoZone to see if that was the case and they tested it which was fine. I decided to buy a battery from Sams because I noticed my Lexus branded battery was leaking acid (This was the third battery in 3 years.) The car is working better than ever plus I am saving money. The batteries from Lexus were just dying frequently on both of my cars.
I think a lot of people are missing the chapter "I asked too much" and even on the forums, you'll hear most people saying the same things about their LC/LX. With that said, there is a Australian alternator that is waterproof. It's not cheap. It's 3K just to buy, if I remember right, but it does make it so that the alternator becomes pretty much bullet proof. The radiator update pretty much fixes the common radiator issue so once replaced you won't have the 100k radiator issue. Want to say the update came out sometime in 2020-ish (someone correct me here). The radiator is also like 4 bolts to replace.
My old 2007 5.7 Tundra still on its original water pump and alternator, and radiator with 161,000! Been very reliable.
