Add a few drops of red ink into your basecoat colour. This makes them way 'redder' and also stops them from looking so orange if you paint them in the old GW style. I can't wait to follow along with this!

I've recently done my own personal project collecting 2nd edition stuff (which was my 40k start) amd I purposefully painted them far brighter than I would nowadays and it was really refreshing doing that. You can still use modern techniques and products but just lightning up your pallette gives that old school vibe.

watching jazza lose his mind over old blood angels minis warms my heart. As a fellow blood angel player seeing the old sculpts is just awesome. I would recommend squidmar video on how to do blood angels. It is a alot of blending on top of a contrast base but it still looks rad as hell, cant wait to see the army progress!

I would not use Streaking Grime BUT: Get some "Old Style" Paints, like the Nostalgia88 or Coat d'arms, use Zenithal Painting styles through the airbrush (Like, Red Basecoat, Brighten up with Orange and Put some layers ontop of it) and use Black Oilwash for some nice, clean and simple black lining.

This story is so emblematic of the archetypal 40k experience. We fell in love with the hobby as kids, and for one reason or another fell out of it. I personally discovered girls and spent the next ten years obsessed with that hobby. Now I am in my thirties I came back into the hobby and I have such a soft spot for the classic 3rd edition hand sculpted models. I have a burgeoning Blood Angels army fit for 1999 that I intend to use the Duncan Rhodes painting guide on. He has a great tutorial on youtube in making a classic 3rd edition Blood Angels paint scheme. You should check it out!

@Tabletop Time: Midwinter Mini's channel had a video about buying the original Citadel Paint set and revitalizing them with a vortex mixer and some thinner/medium and made the paints work like they were new! You should really consider using the old paints or even the NEW old paints made by Coat d'Arms to do these; of course jazz it up with modern techniques like some clean panel lining and gem effects from some of the wonderful new paints from Vallejo or Citadel; where I think you could really shine is by doing dry pigments on the bases and legs of your soldiers and even making some 3d models of jet propelled effect (smoke or fire lifting the jetpack units into the air off their bases a bit for dynamic poses)

It be a shame to "not" do black rims, like you did originally. In the end, it's your project, and I hope you will enjoy repainting these beautiful mini's. Glad to see the Jazza Blood Angels resurrected. :D

3rd edition was always bright, you should paint your army to be hyper vibrant with plenty of highlights of fluorescent red and yellow. Have you seen the shading with colour method, where for red you would make the shadows a blue/purple instead of just a dark red or browned red. It makes colour really pop and would really fit the retro-modern aesthetic you said you wanted.

I think what you would need to look at would be to use the old 2nd and 3rd edition colour scheme with the black trim and hazard stripes, potentially accompanied by the black decorative flames and chest eagles, and - of course - the blue devastator helmets. Goblin Green bases maybe, but you could try to texture them in a more modern way.

So many good memories from that box (which i found again recently complete with all models and terrain etc under my stairs) but looking through the books that came with it i was reminded how at the time i wanted nothing more then a army of Skaven. 20 odd years later i have just forked out far to much hard earned cash on a army of little rat boys and cannot wait to paint them uo as i wanted all those years back.

Ouch, I feel the feels of having given up that old army - I've never cleaned house completely, but there have been odds and ends I decided 'I don't really need that', and miss nowadays. Scouring ebay for a whole vintage force is a bit out of my league, but I've been building an Emperor's Children army recently and peppering in a few old minis I've dug out of long-forgotten boxes, a first edition Space Hulk hunched-up plastic terminator, an old metal Chaos Renegade, even a version one Keeper of Secrets. Back in the day I started with Blood Angels too (I got into the hobby via Space Hulk, so it was inevitable) before repainting them as a homebrew chapter (still got them, thankfully, on their goblin green bases), so I'm really looking forward to seeing your army take shape.

I found my old Blood Angels in the closet as everything shut down and decided that was my project. Had to strip everything, the old paint job was atrocious. And now... not great, but serviceable!
