The solution they propose: if the house does not sell, paint it white. Covering beautiful bricks with cheap plywood, made it look very cheap. The "saloon" wardrobe doors still there, no matter what color they are.

Its because Sophie is English and there that dark wood is seen as very old fashioned. I’m Scottish and when I lived in the US I was taken aback at all the dark wood in houses. A designer once told me that the younger the country the more people want older more traditional decor. I saw the same thing in Australia and New Zealand well as Canada . I think the place looks a million times better with the light paint

According to the realtor, about 100 folks went through the house when it had dark woodwork, but no one made an offer. The woodwork may not be the primary reason, but people who do like original woodwork and fireplaces didn’t buy the house. So the wood was painted, like the sample house that did sell. We all know that buyers want things in move-in condition, and now this house is ready. Want a Craftsman house with dark wood? Buy one. Want a house with painted wood? Buy this one. Sophie’s betting that there are more buyers who want the house the way she redid it.

Real wood work is SO EXPENSIVE!! I genuinely had to stop watching when I realized they were going to paint over it. Removing paint after the fact is NOT reasonable. I still can't believe people would appreciate composite, or pressed board whitewash look, over real wood. I don't even care that it's not your arbitrary "mahogany." The only reason you appreciate it more is marketing. Someone told you "red tones are better" at some point, and you believed it. Before mahogany, it was "heartwood." Someone always wants to sell you something for a premium. Some people like wood. Period. Pine. Cedar. Oak. Teak. Walnut. Cherry. Maple. Birch. Cypress. Ipe. You CAN make it beautiful in that room without ruining hardwood. Imagine painting over wide-plank, knotty pine, floor, just because it was "not mahogany." Ridiculous. Bamboo is popular. It's yellow. or cork. It's "yellow toned." I can't help but think people only want what's "in vogue" and don't think about appreciating what exists.

Why does "a million dollars" equal "need lots of bedrooms"? Millionaires don't necessarily have more children. I don't think they have their inlaws living with them either. I thought people with lots of money might want a nice office, a hobby room, space for whatever they collect?

I don't know how the modern black furniture went with the old fashioned dark floor, the beige kitchen and doors. I like brightning things up,I like white,I don't know how original the floors were, but stripping the dark stains ,and letting a very light natural wood show, may have been sufficient . The grout needed touching up in the kitchen. I've seen a lot of themes where they don't belong (moorish,70's,earth tones, hardwood with modern everywhere...),but taking out a little country was no big deal, taking all the way to urban cosmopolitan in an area that's supposed to be suburban and restful can be swinging it to far the other way. The problem isn't white necessarily, it's just officey, hotel lobby, public,"germy" seeming.

Lots of labor costs but also new furniture, rugs, and finding new decor pieces that fit the new designs. The price of paint of good quality is expensive (not the Walmart cheap, cannot be washed or stay on with any wear junk. Needs to be repainted in 2-3 years) and all that wood needed two coats. Using what you have is great but they had Southwestern and that wouldn't shine in the new decor at all. Custom fireplace surround.

I acknowledge that the white painted woodwork looks light, bright and clean. But if I were looking at this house and found out they had JUST painted a houseful of natural, original gum woodwork, I'd be furious. Paint looks cheap; painting woodwork that was original and stained just cheapens it. And I wouldn't buy it. I hate what you did with the fireplace. I hate the paint. I'm sure it did sell quicker, because people have no imagination or appreciation for period details, but it would NOT have sold to me!

Yea, panicking when your house hasn't sold in 3 weeks seems a bit pre-emptive. I think they should have decluttered the south western stuff and fitted out the house in more modern decor. Maybe refresh the paint but I think styling it to a wider audience was more savy than painting otiginal wood features.

  • @barkinatthemoon

Well today I am unsubscribing from the show. Painting this paneling in a house this gorgeous that is only been on the market for 3 weeks is a travesty. So I'm done I am never watching this again. Take out the Western motif change up some paint colors rearrange some furniture or replace it. That's all this place needs.
