Weeell, okay, playing Devil's Advocate: Linus becoming a shareholder for Framework doesn't BY ITSELF mean he's "backing Right to Repair", it means he's funding a company with a Right to Repair ethic. And that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that, but again, BY ITSELF, it's a capitalistic way of solving things. Actually backing Right to Repair means lobbying legislators to enshrine a _Right_ to Repair. EDIT: Huh, so apparently despite the _two_ fully capitalised "BY ITSELF"s, people still think I'm saying Linus has never ever supported Right to Repair in any other way. Don't know what to say, are people just trying to get offended?

Really great content and of all the companies Linus could support this one is an absolute no brainer. The conflict of intrest issues were covered well and I think LTT has enough consumer trust to deal with that. I rarely use laptops except from my company so I wont be jumping on this product but I can see a ton of appeal. Ironic that ifixit is the sponsor but this is the one piece of modern electronics that really doesn't need their kits.

@@ccibinel I will say this piece of tech needs their kid more since is the kind of tech you will feel comfortable opening up and replacing things. With the others you don't even bother because you know they make it a living hell for you and you ether buy a new one or just take it to a repair shop at best.

@@SIPEROTH Realistically anyone not comfortable doing the simple field replacements this laptop allows wont buy one. While I'd love to see tons of these sold it will not be the industry norm.

I was ready to buy one today after seeing Louis Rossmann's vid on this but I prefer a 15" screen and I have to have a discrete graphics card as I use it for video editing. As soon as you guys make that happen count me in. I've repaired thousands of PC's and laptops in my day and this move to fully integrated, disposable systems is one of the worst trends I've ever seen and it's time for it to come to an end.

With you there on the screen - I have a beefy desktop for graphics, video, etc. that I can access with Parsec if I need the power, but I really want a lightweight Linux machine with a large 1440p screen and outstanding battery life for writing code on the go, but they are surprisingly hard to find.

@@nathanupchurch7549 Have you looked at Chromebooks? I've rooted a lot of those to linux and they have amazing battery life. The Google Pixelbook has a very high res screenbut it's not that big. There has to be someone that did a high res 15" screen you could do something with.

I'm fine with 13" screens but need 2in1 functionality and a touch screen. But I'm very hopeful that the framework team will eventually produce those options.

This is one of the best disclaimers I've ever seen, and a really useful breakdown of business models for physical-goods companies! Thanks for letting us know, and for backing such a neat company!

Videos like this one and the revenue updates really speak to Linus' integrity as a businessman, public figure, and leader. I hope to start a SaaS business of my own in the near future, and I hope I can be half the boss that you are, Linus.

I don't think its that they don't care. I think its more that their business model is based on planned obsolescence. They want you to replace your machine instead of repairing or upgrading it.

@@ashanarchy7255 I’m not even sure about that-most people own laptops for around 5 years, which to me goes well beyond the time frame of planned obsolescence. It’s IMO more to do with economies of scale- it’s probably a lot easier to mass produce a laptop that has 6 possible variants than one that could have dozens.

I agree. I was very much concerned about the profitability and sustainability of framework, not a very profitable business model to survive. The push from Linus will definitely change the situation. I see that linus has always devoted to push the tech industry forward with the power of media. I am glad to see that he is pushing this by involving with the industry. This is very likely to change the whole tech industry.

Businesses are black boxes that money just disappears into, and stuff sometimes comes back out. So, Linus takes the time to explain it in detail for those who simply aren't going to understand what he's talking about. ... There's also the legal component. He needs to spell out in detail exactly what he's doing, so there's no ambiguity which could be abused in any potential lawsuits. A bit of public CYA, if you will.

I'm a huge business nerd and I LOVE the way you explained this. Sending it to some business students I mentor. Thanks for always adding value Linus!

The most telling thing about Framework is that they were willing to send a review unit to Louis Rossmann, who is known for tearing companies who send him stuff a new one. THAT'S having confidence in your product.

@@dhkatz_ Sheds some serious light on just how well thought out the laptop repairability is. And, Louis raised a few concerns, which were answered by framework in the comments. Real top tier stuff. For anyone who doesn't want to watch the whole thing, the laptop has 5 extra screws, and the included screwdriver works for the 2 types of screw heads in the laptop. In the body, there's screws with the same head that are different lengths, and they're all color coded.

Ethical would be to not invest. There are no ethical codes that talk about how to handle conflicts of interest you have purposely embraced short of to say you should get out of them quickly. Disclosure is for people that have found themselves in an unintentional conflict of interest (realizing that a relative is in your direct reporting chain at work), and industries where it's economically unavoidable and the risk is low (real estate agencies, large organizations that have firewalls in place to mitigate the COI).

I am awaiting for a laptop with 3060 or 3070 laptop for Data Science and AI Simulation and algorithms for big data visualization. I was thinking of going for Ryzen 6900HX or i7 12th Gen. What would be the best option for a working professional who also needs atleast 3-4 hours of battery life? because its pointless (have always been the downfall with modular gadgets) Noone is gonna change ports over and over again and if the laptop breaks majority would buy a new laptop simply because they wants something new. Even if they released greatly improved components majority of people would not go and buy the upgrade kit instead keep the laptop as it is and give it to someone who needs it then buy a new one. What the market needs is companies who dont try to make it hard to repair their products and provide the parts required. not modularity. With that said its a wonderful product and they got the repair ability but the market is not asking for modular laptops

Same thing for phones vis-a-vis Fairphone. Samsung or Apple could make a repairable phone that doesn't rely on exploitation and that's more refined and cheaper than a Fairphone, they just don't want to.

Very cool, I didn’t think modular laptops would ever be a thing. I hope we start trending towards more long lasting sustainable things.

As someone who works in PR. My head is spinning at how good this is. Getting in front of ethical/PR nightmares while at the same time transparently backing the company you are invested in. I keep thinking about it and the list goes on. Bravo!

They talked about all of this weeks before in a wan show lol. Funnily enough, he had done a strawpoll then asking if he should invest and it ended up being a no(iirc it was 70%/30%). Maybe he did another poll some other week?

On one hand, Linus's transparency regarding his investor status makes me admire and respect him more. On the other hand, I'm also a little more suspicious of him, wondering why he's carrying around that much American cash on him all the time /s

It's probably not strictly what a media company should do to remain impartial, but you can still choose whether to trust them or not. At least they can wear this decision with pride.

​@@ILoveHandles Well it was a severe oversimplification of production in a Capitalist market and financing growth. I would not use this as info for how to start a business. Linus has a tool that isn't afforded to most businesses. He has an ability to market things and get more eyes on them for absolutely free which is something your new business would not be able to do in the same manner. Someone just looking to start a business shouldn't really be looking that far in to the future of the business. You have to get the thing up and off the ground before any investors will be interested. No, if someone is wanting to start a business and simply hasn't because they don't have the knowledge. This isn't the knowledge you need. I'm not saying its bad information, but your company has to go a LONG way before you can ever dream of paying off loans with stock in your company. So not really starting a business information at all.

@@darktheories1758 While I don't deny any of what you said about his unique position for generating attention at low cost, or any of the things like trading stock being more a late term, big business matter, what I was specifically referring to was more directed at where he was talking about operational costs and production/distribution cycles, profit margins, etc, which I maintain are very relevant concerns to any business at any level.

Good job on the transparency. Way to do it.

This is best overview of the money problems facing startups I have ever seen. You have my support.

I think that is the best way to show how good these are. If Linus, who has access to literally everything invests and buys it

Appreciate not only disclosing your position, but also acknowledging some of the more sticky aspects of this tie up. Also, love LTTs continual mention of environmentally friendly packaging. Makes us as consumers more aware of it, and hopefully encourages more companies to stop using plastic.

Damn Linus. This is hands down the coolest thing you've ever done. From a fan since the "whole room watercooling" days.

12:25 Imagine having an idol in your industry early in your career, then later making it so big in the industry that you HIRE that idol to work for you. That's just kinda surreal to think about, but super freakin cool for Linus.

Given Linus's reputation and dedication and transparency, I would have zero issues with him continuing to review notebooks. I truly believe he is capable of putting his biases aside, or admitting them when they come up.

Yea I agree, I just have envy of 200k to invest and the opportunity to get that 200k in such an exciting startup! (and the finances to be able to risk it all)

This amount of transparency is just absolutely amazing, something we do not see nowadays and it's great to see that Linus cares about it.

This video alone provides everything I need to trust both LTT and Framework going forwards, the clear transparency shows you have nothing to hide, and to that I have nothing but respect. Personally, I don't mind you backing out from notebook reviews if this is something you are clearly incredibly passionate about, and at the same time, after all these years of watching you, I can be pretty sure that no matter what ties to any companies you may have, the most important aspect of your reviews is the truth about a product. Framework is a breath of fresh air for not just the notebook market, but the tech market in general and I hope that in the future we can look back at this laptop as a sort of turning point. Good luck to both you and Framework.

This just feels right. The right to repair movement needs a legitimate leader in this space and Framework with Linus are taking a big leap forward. Well done and good luck!

@@RAHelllord idk about that. Louis now has lobbyists and is aiming at lawmakers directly. Maybe it's not how many people you need vs which people you need. Hopefully Linus and Louis are two sides of the same coin. Linus can do a lot to educate the public, while Louis works hard to push things through the legislative process.

@@jj481012 louis is fighting the micro, with specific states he focuses on, along with kyle weins at ifixit. Their strat is the domino method. Linus is more of the macro game, as a solid leader to the masses, which may help at voting time. both are needed.

That bezel just popping off so easily made me unexpectedly excited. As an IT technician, screen replacement is probably one of the most annoying processes because the bezel never comes off as easy as every video males it seem.

That and it always feels like a few plastic clips make it their mission to insure they'll never go back in the latch they originally sat in. Either cause the WiFi antenna band sifted or because the clip didn't survive the opening process since you accidentally used just a smidge too much force.

It's held on with magnets. You can't get any cooler. As long as you have an average IQ you can fix that laptop. In fact, I'd wager that if you can get in the army you can fix that laptop. (Edit: and I want to be clear that I'm not saying people in the army are stupid, it's just the only organization that has a stated minimum IQ for entry)

ASUS VivoBooks make me want to throw them at the wall. Also the new cheap HP laptops have the panel glued to the top lid. Which meaning you have to risk bending or breaking the top lid assembly to get the screen off.

If they can get this right I might actually be able to recommend a laptop over a desktop and feel good about it, knowing that the user can update the parts as and when they need to. This product is the only current laptop I’d ever consider buying.

What's really big about this is that they aren't just a proponent of right to repair, they're basing their entire business model around it. So if they succeed, they're going to take every RtR opponent's bullets out of their guns because it'll be an undeniable proof such business model is viable.

I'll be honest, at first when you reviewed this laptop I was thinking: "Oh, another one of those "diy" laptop companies that will inevitably shut down or become the same as every other manufacturer in the end due to corporate greed." We have seen it all before, after all. However, seeing you willing to take the plunge AND having full rights to publicly abandon them and cover why gives me a lot of confidence in this business. I now fully expect that this business will become a very big name in the years to come and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future, as I'm sure you will cover it.

i don't get why this concept fails to be profitable. even if they can't sell a new model every single year.. not being able to up themselves every year because they hit their max height with laptops. only gives them room to branch out into other stuff like phones. i truly believe one day the apple like trash e-waste generation will fuck them in the ass someday. because they literally make tons of money by creating trash piles for the world. if they had to recycle every single fucking thing they put out there. they would be a lot less profitable. and they would choose the framework route.

​@@TECH3_ The amount of money needed to make Dell actually interested in a new market segment is WAY higher than the amount needed to keep Framework viable and growing. "Failed" for Dell means it would not be profitable enough, quickly enough, to keep them interested. "Failed" for Framework will mean actual failure. I think Wendell pointed that out on the Level1Techs video on the thing a day or two ago.

Watching this video on my new DIY edition Framework. Still amazed at how stupidly easy it is to open up.

Two of the people Linus lists in this video as industry relationships now work at LMG.

This level of clarity and transparency is so refreshing. I wish more content creators, and really everyone was more like this. Props to your respectability Linus

Yeah.... unfortunately just because he is transparent about it does not make this a good idea. I don't quite get it. He could have gushed about the product without being economically invested in it. That'd probably do more good especially if they didn't need the money. He may be looking to make money off of this.... but yeah.... that is problematic. The transparency is great though. Let everyone know what is going on and let them make their own decisions. I very much disagree with this move, but that's just me. To each their own.

Linus is the kind of guy to make decisions that we'd all like to *think* we'd make, but put in his shoes we probably wouldn't. Linus, here's to you always representing the damn best of the tech community 🍻

I really hope I would. But to be honest, I don't think I'd put it in tech... I'd probably found a charity, and knowing me, somehow bankrupt it and lose all the money...

I like that it's designed to be worked on. Also, I like that there is a bezel to protect the screen. The bezel less screens are completely missing added protection for fragile screens.

Linus would make a great teacher. You'd actually look forward to going to school on the days he teaches

I’m glad that Linus decided to invest in Framework, we need more companies that will go all in on right to repair, and making sure Framework will be able to survive is a big part of bringing the market towards that

Very well said and done. I am sure you can maintain objectivity with your reviews. You have had promos where you requested the product to review and you tore them a new one or two. So I'm sure you can do this.

Thank you for your investment and your honesty, Linus ! I would just do the same if I could, and I sincerely hope Framework changes this industry. The planet and the people on it cannot wait !

The last line of the video is so true: "The only reason other companies can't do this, and Framework proved it, it's because they don't care". Smart of Linus to put it at the end of the video, but wholeheartedly support Framdwork and Linus' vision. I'm looking to buy a laptop sometime this year or next year, if Framework releases a $2.5-3k AMD laptop, I'll buy it on the day it launches ❤️

Looks like an awesome concept, but this caring business model will only be "proven" if they can make it into profitable/viable business. I hope it does.

I am EXTREMLY excited for this! It'll teach people how computers/laptops work on the hardware end of things, enthusiasts will have fun swapping and building AND everything to do with "right to repair" comes to fruition. I desperately hope this becomes a smashing success!

Is it really that difficult? I figured out how to replace parts just by looking up how to? My education in college only covered software side of IT. Not replacing, upgrading or fixing hardware. And it wasn't needed since I learnt that by just using the internet? Why can't most people with interest in this do the same? This isn't that difficult is it?

I felt the same way about programming 6502 in assembly language. Using address lines to load a byte from a memory address onto the accumulator. Using opcodes to manipulate memory and ultimately putting it together to interface with the OS and show the output to the screen, on these simple computers by manipulating a simple frame buffer. I guess you thing also teaches people about computers. ROFL.
