In case anyone's curious, that effect of using stacked 2D images scrolling at different speeds to show depth is called "parallax" which is just one of those great sounding words to say aloud.

Trine 4 is a game which really tripped me out, because it's a 2D game which I initially thought used parallax, but turns out they model the whole backgrounds in 3D and then place in in a 2D perspective, meaning that instead of parallax to take the effect, they have the real effect of depth in the background.

It's in this kind of first time playthroughs that the stellar design of this game shines through. She descends in the ruins and is worried she might get lost, and so she finds the map and does a loop around; what do you know she has enough money to buy the quill. She is more confident and delves deeper, she finds the stag station with just enough money for the toll and the Compass. I love this game. It just gently teaches you to explore, be curious, and never be afraid.

@@Fogmeister haha, yeah I get that a lot. I'm what you'd call a realist. Let me start by saying: I don't want you to misconstrue my comments. I think she did amazing. She grasped the base concepts very quickly. Also 1-shotting 'Hornet' was impressive. And even if she didn't do well, it didn't matter because she had fun, and that's what really matters when you play a game. However, I wouldn't ever say that run was 'perfect' because it simply wasn't. There's a lot of room for improvement. Again that's not to say she didn't do well...but she's literally just playing for the first time. She shouldn't be expected to be perfect. It's not a bad thing that it wasn't perfect, just the cycle of things. (Also being hyper technical is kinda how i was raised, not trying to be a contrarian. Just saying. ^.^) And yes, I'm an absolute blast to be around. 😆

This game has such genius organic tutorials. They don't stick a pop up in your face telling you about hidden walls, they show you that many things are destructible, then they show you the shiny piles of Geo you can smash, THEN they put some of those piles right in front of destructible walls where you are very likely to knock it open. Same with the "pogo strike" move. You do it accidentally a few times, then you do it on purpose and notice you can do it over and over, then you hit that room with the ascending platforms and you performed exactly as the devs intended. Perfect. Never seen your channel before but I enjoyed the ride!

No idea how far ahead you've recorded in this but a small little thing a lot of people miss: you can talk to a lot of the shopkeeps by going to their right side instead of their left; gives you more flavor and dialogue. Left side accesses the shop, right side gives the "talk" option. Doesn't ever gate any upgrades or anything, just gives more context to their character and the world. You can do the same thing with the Stag; instead of talking to him from the platforms if you jump down next to him he'll talk to you about the current stag station and the area around it. Fun little way to immerse yourself in the excellently crafted world! As far as the difficulty of this game goes, it has an excellent difficulty ramp. It's fairly easy at the beginning but is brutally difficult in the optional end game content, but quite frankly it teaches you how to deal with it extremely well along the way. I didn't think I was great at platformers prior to this game, but by the end I felt like a platforming god because of how well this game teaches you how to use its mechanics. I think based on how well you handled this episode (especially figuring out nail pogos way earlier than they expect you to) you'll do just fine finishing the game, and likely will want to do the optional content as well. This game is addictive and extremely well designed. Don't worry about being too slow either. Metroidvanias are meant to be meticulously explored and we all enjoy seeing people find secrets in this type of game (and there are a lot of secrets)

I love this game so much! I found it frustrating at times - I’m excessively bad at platforming - but I always look back at my playthrough fondly. The music makes me instantly sad, but in a comfortable, homesick-ish way and the art is amazing. It’s also an impressively large game, especially when you consider the size of the team and the retail price. I hope you’ll enjoy, Amber!

in terms of being worried you'll get stuck, i found myself stuck on a couple of fights and one point. i took a break from the game for a bit and when i came back i beat them within a few tries. i do not think this game is super difficult other than one or two select fights, and even as the game gets more difficult as it goes on, you unlock a lot more abilities and tools so your options expand. additionally, there will usually be at least a few different ways to go at any given time, so if you're stuck in one place just find somewhere else to go and come back later. knowing your skill you've def got this!

I've watched a few of these now, and I've noticed this gal has _phenomenal_ spacial awareness. She positions herself EXACTLY outside of enemy attacks minimal overshoot, moves in only as close as necessary to land her own attacks, and knows exactly when she has room to heal. For most people those instincts take an entire game's worth of practice, yet here she is nailing it right out the gate. With spacing skills like that, just imagine what she could do if she ever got into competitive fighting games?

How you instantly found a strategy to beat that big guy, how you noticed every important detail (like the marks on the egg looking like Quirrel's "hat", I've never noticed this though I sure do know it now), how you went through a fine path around the Crossroads, you even managed to use your first map better than most people. i KNEW you'd love hollow knight :D the game is SO gorgeous and very very melancholy. I've beaten it once, I have like... 86 hours in it or something LOL. It's such an amazing game. oh - if you walk to the other side of shopkeeps, there's usually a 'listen' option for them too. I wouldn't normally mention this - i don't like giving instructions to blind playthroughs - but it took me like three playthroughs to notice that myself so I thought i'd let you know. I would recommend gathering swarm. It can grab geo from in spikes or acid (or enemies!), which the Knight can't get. just be sure to let it come to you before you leave a room, or you won't collect it :D don't worry about buying the 'wrong' thing - you can always get more geo, not to worry XD The grubfather specifically is a great source of geo if you find his kids! you did two bosses yeah - Gruz Mother and False Knight. You're doing great so far! Hollow Knight isn't actually very hard, you just have to get used to the controls. The Knight... isn't a beetle. What are they? They don't speak. They're - uh, something. You'll find out later. The game is fairly long - i mean, you can speedrun it in 45 minutes, but i think the average playthrough is like 30 hours? As for difficulty - it can get pretty hard, but the game does a really good job of teaching you the mechanics, so I don't think you'll get stuck. If I was able to beat it, you certainly can. Really really looking forward to the rest of this series! SO excited you're playing this game! It's one of my absolute favorites :D

I would encourage you to keep playing, as this is my first time watching you precisely because you're playing Hollow Knight. I will be subscribing to watch you play more of this. Your playstyle of being slow and meticulous and thorough is actually the best way to play the game. I can't tell you the number of playthroughs I've seen where people miss all kinds of stuff in the Forgotten Crossroads because they get impatient and rush to the next area right after defeating the False Knight and getting the spell. They miss half the caterpillars and secret areas, and even sometimes never battle the Gruz Mother and unlock Sly before moving on. Then they discover all the stuff they missed 1/3 of the way through the game. Be slow and thorough, and make a mental note of all the odd areas where you can't progress for when you start to unlock new abilities and get new items. There are some things in this game I have been unable to overcome as a novice to the genre, but you're doing great so far compared to me, and every difficult obstacle is not an obstacle to progress. If there's something you're unable to do, there's generally another way to go about things. Some of the main bosses are challenging, but none are too difficult as long as you keep trying and pay attention to their "tells". This game rewards being attentive and thorough, and punishes impatient, sloppy play. Explore every corner and conquer every obstacle! As many have said, this is one of my very favorite video games, tied for the top spot with Persona 3 FES. If you struggle too much with a fight, leave it alone and come back later. As long as you play it consistently, you will be able to build up muscle memory and intuition, like when you panicked and pogo-cheesed Gruz Mother. That, coupled with new charms and abilities, will constantly help you feel more empowered when taking on big baddies. I loved the video! I look forward to the next installment.

The best game ever. My favorite game. There's 2 things I really love about this game. The 1st is that the pacing of gameplay perfectly fits my brain. Dark Souls' pacing, by contrast, is a horrible fit for my brain. The 2nd is that everything about the presentation fits the concept of "wabi-sabi". The Elderbug is the most wabi-sabi character I've ever seen in a video game. Wabi-sabi is complicated, but it's basically "remembering what was and imagining what could be, in deep contemplation of what has passed."

A grand total of 3 developers made this game (4 if you count the composer). It was priced at less than $30 on release and it had more content with better polish than most triple A titles today. Especially amongst streamers it’s severely overlooked; I think they just see it as a decent metroidvania/souls-like clone and don’t realize that it deserves to be put on the same pedestal as Zelda OoT, Super Metroid, Bloodborne, Morrowind, Dark Souls, etc. as a genre defining experience. Lesser games in that vein have a higher Lets Play series count on YT than Hollow Knight.

EDIT: On a serious note, I would actually recommend buying the Gathering Swarm, just as a QOL improvement. It might take a full playthrough to even return its initial investment in geo, but it'll mean you won't have to worry about picking up geo anymore.

I doubt that. Reckon it would take a couple of hours tops to regain the geo due to how much gets stuck behind spikes etc. And, as you say, saves time from chasing every coin all the time

@@kenlykkeslett7501 I suppose there are a few particularly spiky areas, with more powerful and therefore more lucrative enemies, but I wouldn't say they're commonplace. Otherwise you're only losing a few geo at a time to the spikes.

It won't take that long, there's A LOT of geo you gain during the game killing enemies, geo rocks, chests, relics By the end of the game and after buying basically everything I could I still had 11k geo I didn't need. I do recommend buying GS but essentially losing geo doesn't mean anything.

@@Skatche True, spikes covering geo isn't commonplace on it's own, but there is also plenty of acid and bottomless pits geo likes to jump into 😉

Dang game. Gives the most powerful charm in the very first area too!

1:38:15 it' s very long and interesting game. Difficulity is kinda on dark souls level, sometimes harder, sometimes easier. I wish you will continue this game, cause it's a masterpiace. And sorry for bad English, i'm trying to get good.

This was so fun to watch. I loved seeing a first timer actually fully engage with the game. I'd almost definitely watch the entire playthrough if you keep posting these.

Love seeing you enjoy this the first time like I did. Finding the cute little grubbies - panicking when false knight drops from the ceiling. Just standing there enjoying the music. This game is pure beauty and I love to see and be remembered of my enjoyment by you :)
