Madeline! I love your perspective and wish we could sit with wine and chat for a few hours on this topic. I'm 32 and at around 26 I had the same feelings of discontent with my profession. I really felt the grass was greener somewhere else. Over time my perspective shifted to what you have discovered as well. We can look at our professions in a new way and find gratitude in what they offer. Just because something isn't perfect, it doesn't mean it should be thrown away, as with most things in life. I learned to dive deeper and allow myself to have bad days without thinking I need to do something drastic and change my entire life. I also value how much free time it offers me. I'm glad you've found contentment, it's a difficult thing to find and accept.

I'm secretly happy you went back to QA☺️. I'm actually trying to find QA roles and watched your vids over and over and over again on QA topics and it is soooo helpful!! We have such similar personalities too, even tho I'm much older than you lol. 😅

I was a high school English teacher, then got into QA. I stayed in QA for a year, then went back to teaching. Then went back to QA for a year, then went back to teaching again for 1.5 years. Then went back to QA, and ended up moving into project management. I have STRUGGGLED with staying in the corporate/tech world because teaching was my identity. It was incredibly hard to separate from that, and sometimes still is. I'm working on figuring out who I am as a PERSON, not just 'I'm Rachel I'm a teacher'. That has helped. I've also started to truly learn to value and appreciate the perks of NOT teaching. Like you said, WFH is totally a non-negotiable for me from now on. I'm still trying to find something to fill the void in me of wanting to have a higher purpose and making a difference in the world. I don't know what that is yet, but for now i'm focusing on making myself happy and being the best wife, mom, and dog mom I can be. I'm no longer impacting 170+ lives every year, but TBH I'm not sure how much I impacted them anyway, so I'm learning to be content with a smaller sphere of influence.

So glad other people have trouble figuring out "what to do with their life" too! There is a super interesting mindset with teaching where it almost feels "selfish" to leave and pursue other careers...but we gotta do what's best for us in the end! I have struggled with deciding what my dream job was since I was a child. I hated the questions we got as a kid in school, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", I would always leave it blank cause I wasn't good at anything, but I was curious to learn everything. This topic has hit me in the same way it has with you. I don't have a dream job but as I go through life, my priorities and learnings are always changing, I am not meant to have ONE dream job, but many throughout the different stages in my life. I was a fitness instructor teaching pole dancing and stretching straight out of high school, but I outgrew that, I got everything out of that experience. After changing my major one too many times, I finally graduated with a Bachelors in Software Development last Dec. I truly enjoyed the learning experience, but I can't imagine working in a corporate world writing code, I like to do it on my own time. So I went into Customer Service in the meantime and have actually been enjoying it. I love solving other people's problems and helping out with their day. I am currently looking for a remote position and focusing building a video game with a friend on the side which has been magical. Never stop working on yourself and creating beautiful things. I think you should pursue that writer dream of yours... hehe Thank you so much for this video

Awe I love your mindset toward all of this! I think that "curious to learn everything" is the best way to go through life. There's really so much out there to learn and experience so why not take on new challenges when things start to feel stagnant right? I also think having some kind of creative outlet helps sooo much! That's so freaking cool that you're building a video game! You actually summarized my thoughts exactly. I graduated with a degree in nursing and have been attempting to run away from it ever since I graduated and find the "dream" career for me. I went back to school in plans of becoming a dentist, but realized I wasn't passionate enough about it to commit the next 4+ years of my life to a job I only had a lot of interest in. I'm looking into QA as a job change as of today and stumbled across your videos. Not sure what I'll end up doing, but I'm happy to have heard your perspective and I feel a bit relieved that we have the same thoughts in regard to work sometimes being work and finding contentment in that. :) hope your return is going well!

If you no longer want to work as a QA at one point, there are other roles even within the development team such as Scrum Master, Product Owner, Business Analyst, etc. that are less technical compared to QA. There's always room for growth in tech. I'm currently in a sort of "mid-life crisis", which is why I ended up watching this video. I studied Computer Science and now have 3 years of experience as a QA, but I'm not sure what path I wanna take in the future.

Look forward to hearing more about your QA work. Hopefully we all can share our learnings and grow together.

Ah wow I also wanted to be an author when I was younger, went into teaching, and am now a QA! I actually first watched your videos when I was still a teacher looking to get into QA. I've now been a QA for 2 years, love the work from home life too. Also been learning automation slowly which has been fun. Glad you're back and love your perspective. I listen to Michael Singer a lot after reading the untethered soul and what you say and what he has to say about there being no dream job makes so much sense, too. Theres always opportunity to find fulfilment in what you do. 😊

Also want to add that my thoughts on a dream job are that society has the wrong definition of what it really is. One thing you said really stuck out to me.. you mentioned that it’s not always about going out to find a career that checks the boxes but figuring out how you can check the boxes in the job and that’s so so true! The kicker is that some jobs won’t ever check those boxes for some people which then leads to the struggle of complacency for some people. This all rounds out to an unrealistic vision of what a dream job is if that makes sense. Anyways that’s my rant and thoughts😂

Such a great perspective! I forget who but another I watched another yotuber's video months ago where she mentioned feeling the same way. Sometimes a job is just needed and we have to focus on making things work instead of stressing to find our ideal life. By now you would have started your new job so congrats!

Interesting findings! I would say that the pursuit of a "dream job" is quite treacherous and it can make people think selfishly - what's in it for them rather than how they can help create value for others (which in turn makes them unhappy, been there). There are just so many jobs that need to be done which seem difficult or even impossible to love - and I don't mean QA now, IT is a rather comfortable sector to work in. Some people may come closer to their ideal occupation, others simply learn to enjoy aspects of what they do or focus on other values in life.

That's a super good point! It's definitely a complex topic when you think about all the jobs required to make society continue to run. Hopefully we can all find a good balance that allows us to enjoy the life we live💛

I've worked in QA since I was 18. I'm 30 now. I've tried to work other jobs outside of QA and it just doesn't stick. I never thought I would be in quality. I've accepted that this is a skill I have and I'm really good at being particular about a finished product. I'm currently trying to get into the QA tech role so I can be more flexible and can travel more. Let your skills fund what you love.

@@JN_194 I got a job through a temp agency and someone my dad knew. I would look into temp agencies and just apply to entry level quality positions. Gain the experience and move up. Advance your skills within the job. Depending if you like paper work or the production side of things will depend on what you apply for. I hate paper work. I used to be a document control coordinator. I’d much rather do quality inspection. I like numbers and measuring things to spec. Once you figure out what you like, look for the industry you want to go into. Food. Health. Medical devices. Aerospace. Automotive. The list goes on.

Hi there! I personally didn't take any kind of bootcamp or course for QA. The company I work for hires people with the intent to do all the training once they start, so it is an entry level position. I had a connection in the company which was helpful, but there was also a lengthy interview process and small test (like finding as many bugs on a web page as possible). With tailoring the resume, I focused on the skills of teaching like being thorough, detail-oriented, and taking a sense of ownership in my work. Most companies with entry-level QA jobs want people who show a sense of pride in their work, work well with others, and can prove they are able to learn and adapt quickly. Hopefully this is somewhat helpful, if you have any follow up questions lemme know and I might see about making a specific video for this.😊

(the creative scientist) Hi Madeline! It has been very interesting following your journey! I'm following a similar discovering path. I finished my PhD with a burn out and knowing that I didn't wanted to pursue that unpredictable and unsupported life ever again. Meanwhile, trying to save my mental health and also during pandemic I discovered art, start learning how to paint, and start studying design theory and graphic design (both things I didn't know I could do since I didn't had the "gift" of drawing). After finally finishing my PhD I dreamed about having a creative job, however without any support but google and myself XD I found very hard to know what to pursue and how. I heard friends telling me amazing things about UX and in desperation to find a job I started studying UX and UI the best I could and building a portfolio and applying to jobs (without any luck so far). Although I found UX very interesting and I think I have some skills that would fit the job, I started felling like I was deviating from the original "creative calling" (the dream job). I'm felling very lost right know and sometimes I just feel like you do, maybe I don't mind with a more "simple" job that is not stressful, with a good team and support without being much creative, but a job that would leave some mindspace so at the end of the day I could fulfill that creative passion and explore what I really love and learn more design and creative skills. Sorry for the big comment here. I'm grateful for your sharing and to know there are more people feeling the same way with similar difficulties and paths. It really helped me to feel less alone in this journey, since everyone else around me seems to have everything organized and figured it out and me with 32 years old still trying to find my career path and felling less "normal".
