I'm back! Let's Challenge the Mantis Lords | Hollow Knight [Part 3]

Ойындар

I'm back with more Hollow Knight! Today we make our way through the Fungal Wastes, stumble into Mantis Village and challenge the Mantis Lords. We also briefly visit Deepnest... Which was quite scary.
This is my first playthrough! I thought it would be fun to start off a Game Dev plays series:

Finding a grub after being lost for 15 minutes, trying to free it, only to find it was a mimic and then saying "I hate Deepnest! Get me the fuck out of here!" is one of the most relatable things I've ever seen. This was another great video, I'm loving your playthrough so far! - I'm super impressed that you beat the Mantis Lords on your second try. They were one of the bosses I had the most trouble with, personally. They are meant to be a huge difficulty spike compared to what you faced before. In fact, if you had rested at the bench by Mantis Village rather than at the bench in Dirtmouth, and then fought the Mantis Lords and died, you would have seen Quirrel on your way back to the Mantis Lords, and he would have given you a subtle hint that you might want to get more upgrades before trying to fight them. - I said it in one of the previous videos, but it bears repeating: your attention to every detail is really great. The fact that you figured out what Jiji does so quickly, and the fact that you sweep through areas so thoroughly to make sure you miss anything are really great to see. This is genuinely one of the best blind playthroughs I've ever watched!

I love deepnest from a game design standpoint. It takes a game that the draw is overcoming challenges and learning the rules of the world so it can make you comfortable with going deeper in and it flips the script. It makes you nervous to even walk through a hallway. It eats at you until you either submit or get through it. Yes, you've grown and gotten better, but this land is still dangerous. It's not hard, it's unfair.

It's obvious to look at the fact that she beat Hornet on her first try and say that shows how much skill she has. Less obvious is the fact that she's making use of every resource available to her in ways that most first time players don't - spells are a massive part of the game but take many people a long while to get comfortable with them, and she just DOMINATED the Mantis Lords with them on her second attempt! One of the worst aspects of watching a let's play of a game you enjoy is when the player just doesn't seem to grasp the game for sooo long. Amber picks up on the new mechanics really well and keeps gameplay going. There's a certain game developer's let's plays that I cannot watch because he is *so* wary of taking any damage or dying at all. It's so infuriating to watch them be wary of the most harmless enemies because they're so terrified of getting hit even once (even when at full health and full soul). Amber strikes a nice balance between "WHAT IS GOING ON WHAT DO I DO" and "oh this is how this works okay I got it". Major props for venturing into Deepnest when first coming upon it. I definitely saved Deepnest until I had exhausted every other path.

It's uncanny how insightful and accurate some of Amber's guesses and predictions are, but then I see her fall for some traps and pitfalls, and am relieved to see that she's genuinely new to the game. I think it's just exactly her kind of game. Ari Gibson is an artist first, and developer second and Hollow Knight definitely rewards perceptiveness. There's subtle visual clues into lore and game mechanics hidden throughout.

Second attempt is pretty good, she adapts pretty quickly to mechanics and mobility which when you consider she is a game developer makes sense. As early as first mantis lord fell, without shaman stone I can't say it would've ended up the same, its a very powerful top tier charm and early on buffed spells can compensate for meager base nail damage. Smart play to have it equipped for that fight, most early players will have too much value on other charms (wayward compass) to be able to fit shaman stone onto their notches at this point so it was nice to see. I'm a personal fan of nail lengthing myself so longnail pushed it over the top for me, MoP is just so good.

@@_inSight__ As long as you have at least 1 charm notch left, you can still equip *ANY* charm you want. However, if the charm you select uses more notches than you have you are considered "Overcharmed". When you are Overcharmed, you still get all the benefits of every charm you have equipped, but you take double the damage - so things that normally deal one mask of damage instead deal two, and things that normally deal two masks of damage instead deal four. Overcharming is essentially a high risk high reward option that you should only take if you're confident in your ability to avoid taking hits. However, once you get good at dodging enemies, the downside of Overcharming starts to become less of a big deal as you start taking hits less often, making it more worth it to consider. For most people, the level of skill required for Overcharming to be worth it takes at least an entire playthrough to develop (this is the reason the game doesn't even bother telling you that Overcharming exists), but Amber has shown a really strong ability to survive so far, so I think she may be a bit of an exception to that rule.

Music is just perfect, the fastest in terms of rythm, but so powerful and full of energy. Maybe that's why folks in the Colloseum are so obsessed with battle, they see every one like this

Mantis lords is a wonderful boss fight. It has such a great rhythm to it. I think Deep Nest works so well because the devs didn't just make creepy enemies for a creepy area. The constant/lack of noise. The dim lighting that makes screen navigation difficult. The twisting maze of tunnels that is larger than expected and offers few easy exits or saves. It's just wonderfully designed to make the player feel trapped and uncomfortable. It's like they took certain bad design principals and applied them on purpose to create a mood.

Dude Mantis Lords is one of my favorite bosses of any game. The music is amazing. The moveset is simple but challenging - you can see what you're meant to do so it just comes down to execution. The second phase is the same moveset but at twice the pace while still feeling more dynamic in having two enemies. Gah, it's just all so good. I think it's second only to the final boss from Sekiro for similar reasons. I love bosses that really feel like a high-performance demonstration of the skills you've picked up. Also I hope you're doing better! I particularly enjoy your playthroughs (Bloodborne as well) as it's a good intersection of never having played the game with being familiar enough with game design to notice the small things that make them great. I also appreciate that it's commentary beyond random exclamations. It kind of irks me when a let's player's contribution is just shouting while they struggle.

Mantis Lords is so great because it's the first boss fight to really teach you the importance of positioning. You can stumble through False Knight and even Hornet, but you really have to learn to move with the Mantises to succeed.

The Mantis Lords is probably one of, if not *the* most well designed boss fights in gaming. Challenging but fair, fun, with incredible flow, and tutorial of fighting one to learn all the moves followed by fighting two at once is a masterclass of ramping tension.

Having watched basically all of the playthroughs of Hollow Knight available on KZread this one is the most enjoyable by far. You wouldn't believe how many people go through the whole game without realizing that the signs actually mean something, or that you can pogo off of things, or what rancid eggs do. The list goes on, and so far you have figured most things out in a matter of minutes or whitin the episode at least. Feeling like I don't want to tear my hair out is refreshing and quite nice. I know I am behind on your uploads, but keep it up. Much love - a fan

Just as being a creator on KZread has helped you, you being a creator helps others. Your videos are always a joy to watch. You are nailing this play through, (pun intended). Beating the mantis lords that early in the game was amazing to watch. When I play hollow knight again I will be using this as a guide to improve my own play style.

british playtrought is one of the most highest tier of listening entertainment, I'v found out that about myself thanks to you. I like to hear these videos while I make a especial run of hollow knight by myself(bosses on a especific order, if you are wondering). The sound design is sush that one cannot confuse two diferent areas of the game, even better cause enemies are too a great sorce of sound design. since I know a lot of the game, I can know exactly wich room in the game you are without needing to look, although it isnt realy a challenge when you are in a point of interset like salubra's hut of the mantis lords' boss arena. and this all I say without having watched the rest of the video(curently on the 17 minutes), very excited for another playtrough, already looking foward to the next time!

Here's what I recommend doing (spoiler free) as of this vid: - You can go to Deepnest, but in terms of story progression its a bit early. - You could go after where Hornet was going in the Fungal Wastes. You can cross it now with the Mantis Claws. - Buying charms is always a necessity, but I'd save up for the Lumafly Lantern. It's getting sorta late in the game and you need it to access some places. - Gathering Swarm is a quality of life charm I recommend getting too. And notches with Alubra, whenever possible. - ... there are more places you could visit now with the Mantis Claws.... but I won't tell....

This errs on the side of spoilers though. Part of the fun of the game is getting lost and not knowing where you have to go, so if you say where she should or shouldn't go, it's definitely a spoiler :). Likewise for what objects she might need. Please edit it

Try here if you want to skip the horror for now 53:05 Great work on the Mantis Lords! I can't remember how many attempts it took me my first time through, but it was definitely more than two. There is a TREASURE ROOM that you can enter in the Mantis area, now that you've defeated the Mantis Lords (and the regular Mantis enemies will leave you alone)

A lot of the lore of this game is portrayed really well. If you noticed, there are a few enemies, like Hornet or the mantises that don't give an orange flash when you hit them, but a white one. Speaking of which, if you return to the Mantis Village, you will find a detail, that you will probably find really cute (and perhaps some goodies?)

The crying in the room where you fought the False Knight actually is something you can do much later on in the game. You can place a pin there to remind yourself to check it out later, but don't worry too much about it. You can't get up there without the mantis claw anyway. You missed a secret to the left of the Dash-master statue. You also never got your reward for beating the Mantis Lords. It's a room on the right of the big room full of spikes that the mantis Lords are at the bottom of.

  • @lozg8887
    @lozg88872 жыл бұрын

The way you very soon found that you could bounce on spikes (about this, think back to the very beginning of your first episode...) The way you immediately mastered pogoing off enemies. The way you quickly grasp how to use new mechanics as they are doled out like the wall-jump and the dash. You've found like about 75% (a rough guess) of the secrets available to you up to this point, including the obscure ceiling one next to the grub guy in the forgotten crossroads that some LPers never find (which I put down to your eye as an environmental artist) You discovered overcharming almost immediately. Defeated Hornet on your first try. ...and forgot to sit on a bench before the Mantis Lords! But then got the rhythm of the fight/dance and beat them on your very next try. I think you're going to become really good at this game once you have all of the little fella's abilities. If you want to, you can touch the skill ceiling of this game. I say aim high and go for full completion! You can do it!

O.O You don't know how much I appreciate your calm aura. I can't watch a lot of let's players as my general anxiety riddled brain doesn't do well with shouty people. Even though I know they are just loud, it starts mashing that panic button of " fight or flight " to flood me with adrenaline and I have to stop watching or jitter myself to pieces. So really, thanks for being you and for giving us such nice content to watch. Also, take all the time you need to rest and relax, your health is important, never feel bad for taking care of yourself!
