This is the new Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness, Subaru’s latest entry in their Wilderness line of vehicles. It’s got 9.3 inches of ground clearance, a skid plate, all terrain tires, loads of protective body cladding, and some gold bling. This adorable little machine looks like it’s ready for any adventure you throw at it. Is this a factory built battle wagon? Today we’ll take it on a little road trip and attempt to drive up some seriously steep dirt roads to find out.

I'll let you know tomorrow (Friday) as mine is being delivered to my house. I got the Wilderness with the same upgrades (moonroof, etc.) and chose white because light colors contrast best with the black cladding-just like a Stormtrooper uniform! Looking forward to many weekends and summers carving my own path in the national forests here in the SW and PNW.

9900 miles in and one of my fuel injectors failed despite being very mindful of engine health. I know fails like this happen, but it's a bummer on my first Subaru. Especially being stranded without cell service.

Last time I took my 2018 Crosstrek in for service, they gave me a Wilderness loaner. A potentially expensive extended test drive. Good thing my Crosstrek isn't giving me any issues.

I think this car makes all the sense in the world. It's like a mini-Outback, a nice handy size for light off roading adventures and daily work.

When I was comparing SUV's such as Toyota RAV 4 , Honda, Kia, & Nissan, in AWD system, price, options, Subaru came out on top. I'm now the proud owner of a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness, All I can say is wow! Exceeded all expectations, and I'm loving it !!!!!

As a wagon fanatic: This isn't a wagon, and neither is the Outback. No D pillar on this, it's a blend of a hatch/CUV now. Both have more ground clearance than a Highlander, and these Wilderness ones are ride taller than a Tacoma. The Outback is a full SUV since 2014 riding on a different subframe than the Legacy. Both of these DWARF my 9⁵ Sportcombi and V60 T5.

Wilderness trims should come with fully rubberized floor without carpet to make interior more distinct. Being able to wash easily means no more mud, dirt or bugs in wild. Honda Element had it, and now only a few trucks and Bronco/Wrangler have it.

If Subaru put beefier engines in their cars, this would tempt me a lot. I am not quite ready to give up my (Cobb tuned) Golf Alltrack with the DSG for this with the CVT and less power. At least not yet.

You don't need more power for what this is made for. You need more horsepower for higher top speeds, since you need 8x the power to go 2x the speed (keep repeating that equation). Case in point, go watch videos of the legendary Pinzgauer vehicles off road. They are almost unstoppable, yet only have 88 HP. Now, this isn't as hard core of a vehicle off road as a Pinzgauer, I'm just saying this type of activity is not about HP at all. It's about angles, ground clearance, gearing and cooling.

@@jeffer1101 Like most people who own a vehicle like this, I'd drive it more on road and in the city than offroad. Offroad would be weekends and vacations. My first car had 85 HP from a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. No thanks. For driving on the modern US highway or city road, I may not need the 300-500 horsepower that so many cars come with today, but I do do want more than 200 and more than 200 pound feet of torque.

@@FlowStateNewOrleans that's fine, that's your preference. But my point was that more power isn't needed for driving off road on trails (since you are typically driving at lower speeds anyway). If you're never going off road, you don't need a vehicle like this. Other vehicles have more power with their turbo engines and 8 speed transmissions, but they trade their off road capability for that. A Mazda CX-30 with a 2.5T engine makes a lot more power, but lacks the ground clearance and AWD system to do any off road tasks. You'd be scraping bits, bottoming out, overheating your AWD system (which shuts down) and simply getting stuck with it. If that's not your thing, you'd be happier with the Mazda on the paved roads with its more powerful engine. Just don't leave the asphalt.

@@jeffer1101 That is my preference. That's why I posted about it. :) But since I can't have a fleet of vehicles, I'd like one that can do both: decent commuter on US roadways and still lets me go on trails on the weekend or on vacation. It's not one or the other. It's both. It's versatility. Right now, my 7 year old VW is a better choice than this. Maybe it always will be. The Mazda can't do both. Lots of other vehicles can't do both.

@@FlowStateNewOrleans Depends how far off the asphalt you want to go. This Subaru can go much farther off road than your Golf can, but it sacrifices some of that on road fun to do it. It just depends what works for you. Ryan at DrivingSport TV put it through some pretty challenging tests and it did quite well (plus there's others online too). No, it's not a Wrangler Rubicon or Defender, but it's far more capable than other regular vehicles. I will note, I have a Forester Wilderness. It uses the same powertrain, and despite our previous vehicle having more power from its turbo engine, I don't miss it one bit. As a daily, it's a far better vehicle in every way, and gets about 25% better fuel economy and runs on regular gas.

honestly, even standard subaru trim levels do really good in the dirt if you're not as into hill climbing and just live in an area where not every road will be paved or maintained well - i drove a stock 2012 legacy for about a year and we'd take that thing up dirt hollow roads in the mountains of west virginia and it got about everywhere we needed it to

I'm not really a fan of these 'offroad' trims all the manufacturers are offering. Like you said, 99.9% of them will never see anything more treacherous than a gravel access road to a car camping site. You don't need a lifted version of the lifted version of the Impreza for that.
