I LOST $39,000 Selling Comics
Ойын-сауық
TOPIC: I lost $39,000 selling comics at the wrong time. I sold so many comics duting the lull of 2006 through 2013. I cost myself a ton of money, and I even purchased all those books back. Let's see how much each comic sold for back then, ad how much each is worth right no

I sold off my collection of 10,000 silver and Bronze Age comics in 1990 for $3,000. Imagine how I feel 😢.
The clickbait is strong on this one

this is how you know it worked. keep up the vids. gg.
Friend of mine sold off his PC to put a down payment on a home back in 2012. At the time the value of the PC was around 30-40K. Fast forward to today the collection would probably be over 75k. Can't look back at the past got to do what you have to do. On the plus side, with his investment into his home, the home value had appreciated exponentially since then
Technically you didn’t lose it since you never had it but I feel ya. Good reminder to hold onto your books if you’re able.
Other factors include opportunity cost, inflation, Covid spike, and a collectors desire to pivot strategies - trading for a Tec 31 and Batman 1.
"I could have made $39,000!" would have been more accurate.
Just so I understand the sentiment, when I sold my Apple-stocks in 2017 - does that mean I lost all the gain since??

This. And what did you do with the proceeds? Maybe you invested in something better than apple.

No. But I didn’t have much equity when I bought those books. If I just held I would have made the 40k. I missed out is a better way of saying it

@@mightycomicsandcollectibles I don’t think so, an unrealized loss is when you still hold the asset but haven’t sold when down.
If you took your sale prices and put the cash in an index fund I wonder how many would still be losses?

It’s only a non realized loss bc I sold at the wrong time.
I think people are struggling with the term “loss“. It’s not even an unrealized loss as you have to determine what you did with the money since then and the present day value.. If you put it into other investments, items that appreciated, or into terrific experience, then there is present day value, and all that has to be reconciled with the value in 2006. I understand what you’re comparing and think of it as just the difference in which you could have sold it for now versus then.
Best four second intro I have seen in a long time! Thanks for an enjoyable video, Laurence.

Good morning Lawrence, let’s be real. Had you purchased a fantastic four number one off the new stand you would be way up too. go back as far as one once and with almost any book you would be up. Take any golden age $.10 book any silver age or bronze age $.25 book each of them you would be up. But I think your point is understood but if someone needs money at the time, then that is the time to sell.
I can top that Lawrence. You're not alone in regrets. In 2006 I sold Superman 1 Ext Restoration for $25k. In 2008 I sold Batman 1 4.5 ext. res for $6700. In 2009 I sold A.F. 15 5,5 for $11k. I sold Captain America 1 mod res for $9200. X-men 1 3.0 for $1100. Hang on to those books. Excellent advice.
I had to support with sub! Dude you’re one of the best comic book content creators out there, thank you

That AF15 2.5 actually looks way better than a 2.5! That must have really hurt looking back at that sale!
That’s insane man. Great video Lawerence. I’m hoping this trend continues…there are a lot of silver age keys in my PC I plan on keeping for years unless I have the opportunity to upgrade them
In 1985-86, I bought an FF #1 in VG for $250, an Avengers #1 in VF for $250, and a TOS #39 in VF for $250. I sold them long ago, but they'd be worth around $67000 now. I know dealers who would be multi-millionaires if they held onto the books they've sold over the years. I could've bought a Batman #1 in Fine restored for $1,000, but passed because that was a lot of money for me back then. What d you think that Batman #1 would be worth today? It would have moderate restoration today's standards.

Very informative video. Thanks for sharing
This road only leads to madness...
This is the story you tell your wife about the “loses” you have had when she asks how your comic business is going. But don’t tell her about the real loss post comic boom 🤣
This relates to all things in life, timing. Imagine the difference between todays sold prices and the height of covid sold prices. ⚡💥🎉
I was watching this while I pulled a bread order in my box truck. Don’t know if it was the heat in Florida or combination off the video but when you showed the AF 15, I got really sweaty and light headed 😵💫
I doubt we will see a similar increase in comic book values the next 20 years that will compare with what we experienced the past decade so. The early MCU movies and the Covid hysteria years of free money won't be repeated. Even with the correction after Covid most comic values are still higher than before the pandemic.
Man you make me feel better about holding onto my investment
cool video concept. opportunity lost is a real thing
Sold an x men 1 (1963) 8.0 unrestored in 2007 for 8k; I know your pain
If I had an opportunity to own any of those books, I would never sell them I would put them on the wall of my man cave for personal enjoyment 401K investment books
Good morning Lawrence yes, I went through the same HELL as you. But thank God, I kept some of my key.. my first amazing fantasy. 15. I bought that raw from the newspaper the comics buyers guide.. believe it or not but only $450. Yes, I was depressed when I graded it I didn’t know it was restored.. it came back 8.0 no trimming restored but it’s still roughly $20,000 buck maybe more yes I still have it.. of course, the one book I will never resell I’m taking it to my grave. Amazing fantasy 15. 6.0 I bought that at the New York comic con. No marvel chipping looks much better presentation wise.. I only paid $4000. Obviously, I sold a lot of books before they spiked on the other hand. I don’t bartend anymore.
Can you imagine all those buyers. During the comic boom. Most will never see their money again.

I’m thinking about selling some silver coins, which is around its 10 year high and buying some comics that are hitting 5 year lows?
What’s going on with GSX #1 ? 7.0 for $1900 ?? I paid more for my copy. You would think with the new movie coming out that it will rise in value.
Wow, those are some incredible price changes throughout the years
You sold these books many years ago if you factor inflation over the years your losses might not be as bad as you thought. I made lots of mistakes selling in the past but I made the biggest mistake not dumping all my books during the pandemic. Imagine how much money we could have made.

What were your initial purchase prices? How much have your mega keys appreciated since you bought/traded for them?
@mightycomicsandcollectibles

Who knows what I paid back then. It was in the early 2000’s. I only have 4 mega keys. And 3 are restored and it’s too hard to tell on those books bc they’re rare and they don’t sell often in exact grades restored
Amazing Spiderman 129 signed by Stan Lee graded at 9.0. How much you think its worth.
ASM #11 in a 3.5 is worth only 200 more than it was eighteen years ago? That's both surprising AND disappointing. But in general, the amounts you've lost aren't all that painful over almost two decades!

This was a really great video for us old silver age kids that still own a lot of those old Ditko ASM keys and still own them as adults and took very good care of them. The one book that I purchased as a kid that I traded away in this video that I kick myself in the butt about is Iron Man #1. Iron Man #2 was such a dud that I figured as a kid, made #1 expendable. Even as a jr. high kid at the time, I knew that Tales of Suspense #39 was the book to get for the real Iron Man #1, and that this #1 was a Stan Lee hyped up fake. Even back in '68 when I bought this book out of a comic book machine at a local supermarket, I thought the Gene Colan cover was really cool. Oh well!!

Wait, a comic book machine? Like a vending machine? I would love to hear more details….
@MtHockey
Ай бұрын
@@reprintranch Yes they were vending machines that had the comics piled up and you had to buy the book on the top to get to the book under it. So, we kids would do our best to look at the sides of the books under the top book to try to figure out what books were under it. You would place a dime in one slot and your 2 cents in the slot on other side of the lever and push the lever in and the turnstile would turn, and your comic would come out the bottom much like a candy machine operates. The were really good for picky comic book buyers, because the books spines would not be creased like books in the spin racks, because kids would bend the books over in spin racks as they would peruse through them. However, they were not good if you had to beg your mom for another 12 cents to get the book you wanted that was under the top book. Google sixties comic book machines for a look at one.
@reprintranch

@@MtHockey Wow, I never heard of that before. I sure remember spinner racks and three-in-a-bag packaged comics but I'm either too young (born 1962) or was outside the geographic range (grew up in Florida) to have seen those vending machines. Probably for the best -- I would've driven my Mom nuts asking for dimes and pennies. Thanks for the info!
