The pellets they are taking out of the wood is from some termite or other wood dwelling creature who ate his tunnel into the wood, and pooped out or spat up the wood behind. This is actually good because there are tunnels pre-built in the wood so it makes it easier for the ants to dig out and it will also be faster. Judging by how dry the little wood/poop pellets look, the original bug is probably long gone or dead in the wood somewhere.

Amazing bed origami at 1:30. The ants at the end of the video are taking gravel out of the tree. If you had bothered to read On the Origin of Species, then you would know that, when squirrels manufacture trees, they will fill the hollowed interiors with gravel. This acts as a ballast that minimises the risk of a tree being blown over by the wind (which is created by owls flapping their wings). It also serves to keep down costs.

it looks like that old piece of wood you added may have been occupied by another insect who had their eggs in there. Then the ants took over and are evicting all the eggs. I wonder what species they were.

these are temnothorax ants, they have really small colonies with max numbers of around 300, they are non agressive and wont harm any other ants, they are also very hard to keep in a tank
