I Learned Macrame for My Sister... And It Wasn't What I Expected!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Macrame is not something I thought I would be picking up anytime soon… I mean who's got the time when you're already pursuing embroidery at a rousing gallop? But when my sister mentioned her decor plans for her new home, I couldn't help chiming in with a "I can make that for you!"
Cue the long process of learning a new art, the bulk of which came down to one week where I dove into knots, patterns, designs, and more, turning out 5 successful plant hangers and 1 giant wall hanging that I'm quite proud of! I hope you enjoy the exploration!
If you'd like to see more about macrame (I wouldn't mind making some more in the near future), then let me know in the comments below!

There's a theme to your videos... "oh, I don't know what I'm doing and all my stuff is crap.......... Bam, beautiful artwork that someone would spend money on in a boutique...." You are actually really good at this stuff.

As a macrame person: people that do pieces that can get pretty long tend to use adjustable clothes hangers so they can keep the angle not so awkward and pain inducing. I am cheap however and my main way of working pieces is using my dining room chairs that have a 3x3 grid. That gives me 3 different heights to adjust and even MORE if I sit on the floor instead of on the couch. Someday I'll invest in that clothes hanger.... but today is not that day. And from my experience thus far being sore is just part of the game and estimating cord lengths will always be the hardest part. That being said you did great learning and exploring! I, like you, went straight from learning the basic knots to drafting my own patterns. It's really fun to know that 90% of the work you do is with the clove hitch and square knot. There's definitely a lot of undoing whole sections and redoing as you learn are figuring out tension and freestyling patterns. I got into macrame because I'm a sailor that wanted to improve my knot-work. I don't know if macrame really achieves my goal in the end but I still enjoy doing it! If you want a real tidy way to end planters I highly suggest learning the Matthew Walker knot. Once it is tightened it is never coming out but It's magic is that it makes all the strings fall uniformly at the bottom and looks 100x cleaner and professional than any overhand knot. It's incredibly satisfying too. Happy knotting! Don't forget to stretch!

I just watched your Macrame video on the delicate common channel and thought didn't you have a stitchery video for it as well? It's interesting to see the differnce. But both videos are great in their own way.

That was fun! I got a macrame ket from someone as a gift and wanted to watch someone else fuddle their way through it too 😂 Thank you!

Looking at that finished piece (which is gorgeous!) gave me an idea for an interesting alternative to boring sheer curtains like the ones I have behind my blackouts. I also have an unconventional home, more of a cabin, and the bathroom door (which was put in by the previous owner but I love it) is an exterior door with panes of glass in the top half. I don't get visitors so the transparency isn't an issue (edit: as if I ever even close it, haha!), but I still think a pretty macramé "curtain" would look lovely! 😄

Just discovered you as I’m learning embroidery, after learning bead weaving at the beginning of the year…. I’m feeling like we are similar people in the “yeah I could learn that” realm. My bestie takes care of all my macrame needs but I’m definitely itching to try it now haha! Great video, love your personality, definitely just subscribed!!

Watching your videos, you think in the same way as me, I like to go in at the deep and and not bother with a pattern. Thanks for showing how to do it with macrame. I think I have a book somewhere on macraweave!
